I read this book with great anticipation for two reasons. First, I am a fan of the author. I read his two earlier books, Flags of Our Fathers and FlyBoys, and thoroughly enjoyed them. They were well researched, well analyzed, well organized, and well written. He has an easy, clear, conversational style of writing. Second, I have read a great deal about Theodore Roosevelt, and find him an amazing, complex historical character.Well I was sadly disappointed. This is a snarky, superficial hatchet job. Bradley, for some reason, has and displays nothing but contempt for Theodore Roosevelt, his wife Edith, his eldest daughter Alice, William Howard Taft, and his wife Nellie. The central theme throughout the book is that these characters were racists and all they did was to try to advance the Teutonic Westerly migration, mowing down everything in their path. They were racists, and they did believe that the world was better because of the westward march of Teutonic civilization, but there was more to them than that.T. Roosevelt was, as Bradley reports, a racist elitist and a publicity hound who carefully sculpted his public image. For that he deserves criticism. But he lived in an era when most of the public was racist. He was a successful politician because he was very conscious of his image. If we are to condemn historical figures who displayed those characteristics, we will be condemning many giants in our history. Lincoln was a racist who happened to despise slavery. He conceived of a plan to move the freed slaves to a colony in Northern Africa. Washington, Jefferson, Madison owned slaves. All successful politicians exhibit varying degrees of managing their public images, and all are publicity hounds.Perhaps the best example of Bradley's snarkiness is found in his reference to the honeymoon trip Roosevelt took after he married Edith. They took a cruise--"a very expensive cruise." Roosevelt had money. Should we condemn every wealthy person who takes a very expensive honeymoon trip?Bradley suggests there was nothing real about T Roosevelt, including the image of "manliness" he so carefully cultivated. Read Edmund Morris' carefully researched three volume biography of T. Roosevelt, and you will see that he had genuine courage, physical strength, and physical stamina. Read Candice Millard's Theodore Roosevelt and the River of Doubt, and you will have no doubt about his courage and stamina.There were interesting facts I learned from this book, but I suspect they were blown far out of proportion. He focussed on private conversations held by Taft (then Secretary of War) with insiders in the Japanese government. According to Bradley, these were unlawful, unconstitutional "agreements" between the United States and Japan that gave Japan license to overrun Asia. According to Bradley, these sinister "deals" were a direct cause of WWII, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. I doubt these conversations were materially more than private behind-the-scenes conversations occurring in the diplomatic world then and now. I am certain these informal conversations did not generate desire for an imperial grab that Japan did not already have. Long before China overran Manchuria, two decades later, Japan could not have believed it had America's blessing to do so.I know Bradley is capable of producing a far better book than this. He has twice. This book was a huge disappointment for me.
Currently finishing the translation of my mother's World War 2 diary in the Dutch East Indies. It explains how Japan went from cloistered but peaceful country in 1853 to westernized and agressive rogue state with support and direction of America. A lot of people, including my family,suffered from western hubris. In order to avoid repeating history we must learn from it. It also shows the reason why this period of American history was so odious (1880-1910). Holland does have to explain its need for control of the entire archipeligo, but saw them as worthy humans, and eventually brought infrastructure, and full educational system, puttimg them on the road to functioning democracy (eventually).
This book is ostensibly a history of a cruise that Taft and other American VIPs made prior to WWI, in which secret assurances were given to Japan that it could invade Korea. But it is also an indictment of how Teddy Roosevelt's racism and PR tactics changed the course of history in the Pacific, causing the inevitability of WWII, the rise of communism in China, and the Vietnam War.You can't put this book down. It reads almost like a novel, although a few things are repeated several times (like Teddy Roosevelt's career as a best-selling writer). I was shocked to learn about the massacres that the US did in the Philippines, the water boarding torture that we practiced on a widespread basis, our deposing of the Hawaiian queen. History books have certainly whitewashed our behavior. It makes me ashamed; I no longer can feel anger towards the Turks for their treatment of Armenians when my own country indulged in wholesale slaughter in the Philippines, for no justifiable cause.What impressed me most, however, was the way that this book showcased how our thinking has changed since the turn of the 19th century, when whites assumed that it was impossible for non-whites to attain civilization or achieve democracy. The arrogance is almost unbelievable -- until one remembers how unquestioned this worldview was. What similar arrogances do we currently indulge in, which will seem equally reprehensible a few generations from now?As soon as I finished this book, I bought copies for numerous people, and signed up to give a summary of it to a book group. That's how important the message is.
Well written sad truth of America's early history of taking the Philippines.
Americans need to read uncensored history.
As Henry Ford said several times, "history is bunk." There is a lot of truth in that statement. But this book does not belong in that unfortunate category of literary trash. On the contrary, it is a no holds barred, fascinating account of a little known and much ignored phase of American history which is critical for understanding what would come after (and PLENTY would come after!). This is the kind of history that Americans need to be told MUCH more about. Instead of the typical sanitized, white washed version that we usually get in the public schools, this is history in the raw, warts and all. No hagiographer who celebrates the alleged "glories" of American empire building, Bradley lays out a thesis which illustrates American politicians as the power hungry psychopaths not only as they were at the time, but as they continue to be.
