Where I really learn from Dream Theater is when I read this score while the CD is playing. Because, after all, this book really is a very thorough score for the album, allowing you to watch at least two of the parts in action (guitar and voice), plus the occasional piano part written out. Since I play both piano and guitar, and sing, it's like having a partial orchestration provided for my education. And I do learn from this music. You will, too, and that can only help your own technical ability. Of course, you really need to know how to read music (and quickly, in some sections) to read the book while the CD is playing. As Petrucci says in another book, regular practice is the greatest boost to proficiency - so if you get this book, read thru it with the studio recording, and practice regularly, you will learn how to play this music. Maybe not as well, maybe not as spontaneously, but there are so many techniques here you'll gain a solid foundation for rock playing and writing. Not a bad return on your $25 investment, as long as you're willing to put in the time, too.Not every page is going to surprise you, because there's a lot of repetition in DT's music and usually with enough subtle variation that few shortcuts can be taken and still remain faithful to the original songs. You'll see that here. You'll also see plenty of "Riffs" and "Rhythm Figures", too. Again, the trick is to see how they constructed their songs and appreciate both the repetition and the changes.You will learn from this book, which is an excellent transcription of the guitar and voice parts, and I think you'll enjoy it every step of the way. 5 stars simply because this is such a great resource for any guitarist's education -- and it's such great music, too.

Not a knock on the content (hence 2 stars) but this is terrible. It appears to be a PDF rendering of the original content and the placed on to kindle format. The music looks as though it is about 20ft away and does not zoom. Perhaps it is better on an actual kindle as I am using this for iphone and Mac, but this is clearly not a true kindle format. caveat emptor....

This is THE book you should buy if you consider a DT fan and you play guitar.Finally I can "try" to play all those classic songs of scenes from a memory with the real notations, that trust me; are very different for those internet tabs.

Not too much to say. If you're looking for a transcription of this album, this is a good quality one with no errors that I can hear.

I have been working for over three decades and up until 2 years ago was blissfully ignorant of the joys and tribulations of working with people from another nation. I was sent to the UK for two weeks and returned home extremely frustrated as I felt that we had gotten nothing done. As long as I was there I was planning on getting done what I thought I had been sent to do. In typical fashion, when on a deadline (mine not theirs), I was expecting to work late and on the weekend. Well no, they left on time and definitely were not working the weekend. Hmmm. Really enjoyed working with them but my rush was definitely not their rush. But enough of that...now this little gem would have helped to set the stage for that trip and I only wish I would have had it to prepare me somewhat for working with people who speak the same language but approach work with a different attitude. It is eye opening and I know it will help in the future as I am exposed to other cultures and nationalities.

Got this book for a required class to earn international studies certificate. Very common sense yet useful if considering working in a very culturally diverse workforce or moving internationally.

Book works as needed for my course.

The majority of this book feels a little redundant and obvious, but the book tries to teach some very valuable lessons, which I can appreciate.

It was on my suggested reading list. It arrived safely and on time. I thought the content was a little below the level I'd have liked, but that is my personal preference.

It is a good introduction to cultural awareness, but the kindle version is full of typos. Simple things like repeating the same word or phrase over phrase over.

This is the perfect combination of popularly presented information with enough scholarly backup to make it legitimate.It was exactly what I needed to prepare a presentation at an international engineering conference where the interest was in more practical approaches rather than academic research.

This is a wonderful book and I get different insights every time I read it. The book describes the basic scale which creates a knowledge about how to understand culture difference, the awareness on self and other's styles in workplace, and the skills and behaviors in handling different situations. A great book on cross culture management for business.
