We used this book for my homeschooling daughter. It's ok, but had I known how thin it was, I would've probably chosen a different book. It covers most of the 5th grade, but doesn't give enough practice lessons. I had to supplement this workbook with worksheets I was able to find over the internet.It does have some common core stuff in it, but we just ignored it. Wasn't much.

Super poor explanation of how to do problems. I am a Math major and even having that in my background I know the average adult wouldn't be able to help their child with these math problems. Off to teaching text books like I should have done from the beginning. You get what you pay for folks!

I teach 5th grade and bought this because I had a student that was gifted. She tested for the Pre-IB program for middle school and got in! One of their requirements after admission was to complete the 6th grade math Spectrum book during the summer. I knew the moment I met her in August she wanted to test to get in that middle school. So I bought her the 6th grade Spectrum book just to see what she could do, and she completed the thing just before winter break. So then I bought her the 7th grade one to keep going and she flew through that too! I love this series!

I purchased this workbook for homeschool. I compared it to the core requirements for Math in our state and it covered almost everything. I only use it if my homeschooler needs extra practice or is struggling with a concept. The workbook is 160 pages. There are 7 chapters. At the beginning of each chapter there is a pretest to discern problem areas. At the top of each worksheet lesson there is an explanation on how to complete the problems, with an actual example. There is room for your child to do their work on the actual page if they do not write too large. There is an answer key in the back. I also love that word problems are included. Great value for the price.

I am a 6th grade teacher and feel this workbook is well aligned with what we teach. It provides examples and plenty of practice problems with a good variety of skill level. Great workbook for summertime. I have not tried the language arts one but am very happy with the math.

The Spectrum books aren't my favorite. They do have some great work and pages however there are too few pages and way too many problems per page. We split them up but it's still annoying. I usually only use about half the book and it's kind of pricey for half a workbook. It goes in an odd order, but obviously you can use them in whatever order. It just gets annoying sometimes bcs i tear out the pages and one side is something helpful now but the other side isn't for a few weeks or even months and I have to keep track of that page for that long. Have been looking for a better substitute and haven't found one to replace it yet. Hopefully I will before next year.

There are quite a few wrong answers which is just unacceptable! So, before you mark your child's or student's answer wrong, you'd better do it yourself to make sure the answer itself is correct. I've found close to a dozen wrong answers!!!!

I really do like the way that Spectrum does things. I really wish that they would have more pages on the more difficult concepts. Sometimes they will skip a step and it confuses the student but it works for the most part.

Had a kid behind in math, tutor suggested this and its working great, along with flashcards and math games. big improvement in 4 weeks. Best for teaching tutoring set up.

Great companion to any trail guide of available hikes in Grand Staircase of the Escalante.This travel map is meant to accompany you on your hike. The paper stock is high quality and water repellant and thus won't be worse for the wear in your knapsack or backpack.I used it as a general planning guide to try and get a terrain view of the hikes my son and I wanted to pursue during a recent trip. The map serves its purpose.

This is an okay map. Good for forest service roads with mention of some of the more popular trail heads. The paper has a nice smooth finish but you will still need to handle it with care. Do not expect this map to be great for individual hiking trails.

Unlike the other Trails Illustrated maps that I have, this map does not show the trail routes for about 75% of the trails. It has a logo to mark the trailhead location but not the actual route of the trail as usually shown by dashes ( ------ ) .

These National Geographic Maps are phenomenal. They feel like a waxy paper but if you try to do a small tear along the edge it stretches instead of tearing like paper so they seem to be made from a plastic paper instead. So that is how they are waterproof and tear proof. I found the detail really good with great hiking information and some geological information on many of these maps.

This by far is the best map I have ever found! Since Escalante isn't a National Park other maps don't list all the canyons or trail heads like this map. It's a little big but perfect for the fact it even list canyons that are in BLM lands.

Just the right stuff for the hikers in Southern Utah region. Doesn't tear easily, water resistant and very accurate map with enough details.

This is a large beautiful map made with sturdy paper. It's easy to read and is nicely done.

While I think that it is a good way to get students who live in these situations to read and probably a pretty accurate representation of their lifestyles, I am disturbed by the perpetuation of the stereotypical way that women are portrayed in this book. There is no question that the double standards for men and women in relationships is hypocritical . It just seems to be accepted as the way it is. Men can do whatever they want and women are held to higher, monogamist standard.Having said that, the book is an easy read--well written and flows well.

This book afforded me the opportunity to walk in the shoes of someone so completely different from myself who has lived a life I can't even imagine. I appreciated how poignant and real the writing was in its portrayal of inner-city poverty. Unfortunately, there is SO much foul language that, even though that language fits naturally into the setting of the story, I do not feel comfortable adding this book to my classroom library.

Tyrell is basically a good kid, but at 15 years old has to deal with some adult responsibilities. His father is in jail and his mother is completely worthless, so Tyrell is the only hope his younger brother has for a decent life. When they get evicted, the family is placed in a roach-infested motel until more suitable housing becomes available. Tyrell's mother takes no responsibility for her own children, and even goes so far as to expect Tyrell to deal drugs in order to make enough money to support the family. Tyrell is determined not to end up in jail like his dad, and comes up with his own money making scheme. Meanwhile, his girlfriend, Novisha, and another homeless teen, Jasmine, send a few more challenges his way.I didn't love this book, but it was extremely popular in my classroom, even with reluctant readers.Drug use, language, and sexual situations make it more appropriate for mature readers.

Without the sex there isn't much of a story line. My kids equate it to 50 shades of grey (for kid). Thumbs down. This was a recommended middle school read. Bad idea.

Living in the Bronx, Tyrell is forced into manhood by the re-incarceration of his father and his mother’s inability to accept responsibility. Dealing with horrific emergency housing, Tyrell struggles to find a legal means of supporting his family and to make the “right” life decisions about school, relationships and family. The bitter ending, and true to life language and sexual content help to portray genuine hurdles that many economically disadvantage youth confront daily.

Tyrell is the story set over several weeks of a tough high school dropout in the Bronx. He comes from a down and out family...his father is in prison; his mother is someone who really does belong in Mitt Romney's 47% of the population, a woman who does expect the government to support her. Along with his young brother, the family lives in a roach-infested motel, a temporary dwelling for the homeless. One bright spot in Tyrell's life is his girlfriend Novisha, whose life and family are stable. The novel involves Tyrell's battle to keep his own head and his family's above water, as well as that of a girl named Jasmine who lives at the hotel. The novel is told from Tyrell's point of view, and is narrated in his dialect. As a result, it spares no punches. The language is often raw; the book does involve sexual and drug-related situations that Tyrell encounters. Be that as it may, Tyrell's story is intriguing, and certainly will attract high school students who wouldn't classify themselves as "readers."

I was really surprised this book was on my son's high school summer reading list this year. The story was decent but full of profanity. I don't think the profanity was necessary to make Tyrell's story anymore poignant. It would have been the same story without it.

Character authentic dialogue and youthful voices that you can hear, Tyrell is a realistic, contemporary first novel. Kids will love that the characters sound "right" while adults might struggle reading the dialect. The book has been very popular and well read by my older students...a little racy for those under 13-14 if not really mature.
