Unpresidented: A Biography of Donald Trump, by Martha Brockenbrough

From School Library Journal

Gr 7 Up-Reality star-turned-controversial president Donald Trump was born into privilege and mentored in business by his father. This evenly paced, meticulously researched biography from the author of the acclaimed Alexander Hamilton, Revolutionary uses primary and secondary sources and contains dialogue, pull quotes, and photos. The book is mostly chronological, covering Trump's grandfather's immigration to the United States, his father's rise to wealth, and Trump's youth and young adulthood and concludes with a heated Twitter exchange from July 2018. Trump supporters may call this book biased, as scandal is never far from Trump's business dealings or political career, but the author carefully cites sources to ensure accuracy, and the reporting is straightforward, without subjective asides. The author handles sensitive issues (Trump's misogynistic language and sexual assault accusations, for example) in a manner that's appropriate for teens yet still respectful of their intelligence. Brockenbrough's thorough research and comprehensive work laying down Trump's backstory make this a strong resource, even as current events carry on in real time. The back matter is similarly extensive, with 90 pages dedicated to "Donald J. Trump's Milestones," short biographies of campaign advisors and legal team members, and a list of Russia connections in addition to end notes, a bibliography, and an index. VERDICT Painstaking research, straightforward delivery, and succinct explanations make this a smart addition to nonfiction collections.-Lindsay Jensen, Nashville Public Libraryα(c) Copyright 2011. Brockenbrough’s biography of Trump was incredibly well-researched and very readable. Her book detailed his whole life, but there was a lot of attention paid to the past two years of his and the year leading up to his presidency. Reading about those three years in a single narrative give a clear perspective to what Trump and his team have done. The last line of the book is truly chilling.

Fantastic biography. While the facts of the Presidency were known to me, I knew little about his childhood and young adulthood prior to The Apprentice. This will be a must-read for teenagers and adults who want to understand the timeline of his life. Also, with 50 pages of endnotes, I was impressed with the due diligence of the author.

This is a well-researched, comprehensive look at Donald Trump, including a lot of facts I had never heard before. Whether you're a Trump fan or not, this one is required reading.

Incredibly well researched story of President Trump. Thoughtful look at the patterns that defined him as a person prior to being elected. A highly-recommended, important read: especially for the YA audience this was written for.

I was impressed with UNPRESIDENTED's wealth of research (supported by reputable sources), its readability, and its wide scope (from Donald Trump's family history all the way into 2018). A great choice for teens and adults seeking to understand who this president is and how he got here. Why wait for the history books to tell his story when you can read this fantastically-researched biography now?

The author's journalistic background immediately comes into view, not in a good way. Years ago, journalists were taught to be fair, to not let their own personal bias influence what they presented to the public. Not so anymore. The political bias on display these days is astounding--and alarming to any fair-minded American.A am a scientist, so I deal in "facts." But after extensive experience, I have well learned that "facts" can be stacked a certain way to achieve a desired effect or outcome. Any scientist will admit, statistics don't lie, but they often don't tell the whole story. In this book for young people, "facts" about the life of Donald Trump are presented in a semi-biographical fashion to supposedly tell the truth about the man. But a sensible reader cannot get through one chapter without realizing these "facts" are selected and presented in a subtle way (a clever craft of modern journalists) to paint a totally negative picture of the book's subject.I am also a father who has written for young people. It takes a lot to shock me, but I was pretty astounded when I read the author had given the actual complete quote of the vulgar remark made by Mr. Trump, including the P word, a quote most networks (which hate Trump) would not even put on the air--in a book for young people. Dirty locker-room talk to be sure (I'm sure Bill Clinton never ever said anything vulgar ever), but said in a locker-room type setting, NOT in a book for young people. It even ends advising "young people" to make up their own minds and express their feeling with their votes. Young people does mean under 18, right?Bottom line, the real motive behind this book is not to enlighten in a positive or constructive way. It is to sow seeds of bias against one political side into young, impressionable minds. Our American youth deserve better, much better.

This book is meticulously researched and documented. And it does an incredible job of showing patterns of behavior that span a lifetime. I've read several books examining our current president, but so far, this one has the most comprehensive look at his origin story. Seeing the long game doesn't make it more palatable, but it's definitely easier to understand how we arrived here.I love that Brockenbrough knows young adults are more than capable of thinking critically when provided with FACTS and she gives them. But having said that, this book is for any young adult or adult reader. No matter who you are, you'll be blown away by how detail meets readability. It's everything you want in a biography and unfortunately, hardly anything you'd ever want in a President.

Review

"All the elements are here: glamour, wit, and inspiration. Tuck in for a stylish life." (Jonathan Adler)"Erin Gates's incredible eye for beauty is matched only by her funny, raw, and honest voice. I am such a fan of this gifted woman and this gorgeous book." (J. Courtney Sullivan, author of The Engagements and Maine)"Erin's book is a breath of fresh air, just like her witty, engaging, and informative blog. And unlike most decorating books, I actually read this one!" (Holly Becker, author of Decor8)"The thing I've always loved about Erin's blog is how well she balances the personal and professional while making it fun and informational. She has translated that seamlessly into this book, where you get a sense of not only who she is but also expert design advice. And her cheetah print stairs had me at hello... followed by a quick "damn gurl!" (Emily Henderson, HGTV host)“Of course I loved seeing the hints of David Hicks in her beautiful design work, but what struck me the most was the undecoratorly way this book is written. Hugely refreshing. Erin is a joy both in print and in person.” (India Hicks)"Filled with her trademark no-holds-barred prose, charming anecdotes, and practical advice." (Houston Chronicle)"Style is subjective, but the elements of style are pretty universal. Few people know this better than blogger-turned-interior designer and author Erin Gates. She wrote the book on it--literally." (Huffington Post Home)"[Gates] has a knack for combining practical advice [...] with humorous reflection on mistakes and lessons learned over the course of her 10-year career as an interior designer." (BookPage)"Her advice is glamorous yet practical and often served up with humor." (Washington Post)"Its pages are full of gorgeous photographs and funny personal essays about renovation disasters and marital spats over what table to choose. Warning: You may be roped into rearranging the furniture." (RealSimple.com)

Honestly, the best part of the book is the cover. As a regular blog reader, I was really looking forward to getting a glimpse into Erin's client work. While her projects are certainly pretty and suitable to my taste, I am unimpressed at the diversity throughout her portfolio. Let me spare you the purchase if you're on the fence and tell you what a project consists of: Greek Key trim on curtain panels, roman shades with an accent band, a sunburst mirror, Amanda Talley artwork, X-benches in the foyer, Hermes/Prada labels, staged Hunter boots, the repeated Target gold frame, gray gray gray, Bengal Bazaar, Jiri Ikat, and a sputnik chandelier for the win. The redundancy is apparent.Would I love my house to incorporate all of those things? Sure - and I do, and I love them. I'm not saying she has bad taste. The book simply exhibits a lower level of design innovation, and I do not consider this to be even close in the ranks of other published designers. I want to be inspired by unexpected design applications when I read a design book. I don't want to recognize every trendy product, or read something that I, an amateur, would already think to do myself.

I like this book as a coffee table book. It was nice photos and did give me some styling inspiration. But once I started reading some of the content I had to stop! I found the writing and anecdotes very immature and uninformative. I guess expected more general interior decorating and styling tips/methods, and not so much about the authors own decoration of her own home. I still think this a nice book to flip through - I just won't be reading it cover to cover!

Um, no. This decidedly unprofessional collection of overly repeated common-sense decorating "ideas" and suggestions, offered up with uninteresting chatter from the author's personal life and stuffed with filler pictures, is headed straight to a Goodwill shelf. I suggest your money is better spent on the Nate Berkus book, "The Things That Matter."

Too many personal and uninteresting anecdotes and not enough concrete information. The example images aren't particularly inspiring. Was a struggle to finish this book.

I used to read this author's blog. She has shown her true colors as of late, and I've quit reading her blog and unfollowed her on social media. As other reviewers pointed out, this book reads like an autobiography of the author's own home renovation, with a couple of photos from her other projects thrown in. Save your money; you can read about her own home renovation on her blog for free. The other photos look like they were taken on a phone - unimpressive quality. Maybe I'm accustomed to other design books, which all seem to have much higher photograph quality than this book. As to the content, it's all the same - a console table with matching lamps and two x-benches, greek key trim on everything, etc. Nothing new here. As to the author's writing, she's very opinionated and many of her blog posts are off-putting (complaining about having it all whilst having a book deal and a nanny on staff), and she and her husband write extremely rude comments to those who disagree with anything she says (as other reviewers here have pointed out.) It's very bizarre and dramatic. I read the book and got a few ideas but it's in my donation box. Not one to keep as a "forever" book.

I will be honest here... I bought this book for display purposes only and it was solely because of the black and white striped binding. It is a very pretty book stacked on top of my Chanel and Tiffany books. I have never opened the book and probably will never open the book. It's pretty and that is all I care about.

This book is beautifully produced with many high quality photos and good text. Why don't I love it?? Because it seems that all the rooms featured are pretty much the same formula: a statue, a couple of nice trays, good traditional or semi-traditional furniture. I don't consider myself incredibly avant-garde, but I would have enjoyed seeing a bit more variety and experimentation.

I really like it, it's very an amazing book!
