Gr 8 Up—Cara Jenkins has traveled the world with her mountaineering parents and her dad's best friend, Max, so it is no surprise that competitive rock climbing is in her genes. At the World Youth Championships in Ecuador, the California teen is shaken to learn that her parents' expedition atop Mount Chimborazo has gone awry and Max is missing. Cara is forced to leave the event for Detroit to stay with her estranged grandparents while her parents search for him. Cara's anxiety about her parents' safety is compounded by the awkwardness of being reacquainted with her grandparents and being the new girl at school. She befriends fellow juniors Kaitlyn and Nick at the goth lunch table in an attempt to fly under the radar, as her face has appeared in several sports magazines. But mysterious notes left in her locker reveal that someone knows who she is and wonders why she has turned her back on the climbing scene. This mystery drives the narrative as new multilayered characters are introduced and a light romance buds, but it is Cara's grandparents who understand what she needs to ultimately gain her footing. The teen's unabashed athleticism is refreshing, and readers will find the rock climbing details authentic and enlightening. VERDICT A hot pick for outdoorsy teens who like relatable characters, with a bit of romance, mystery, and a road trip.—Vicki Reutter, State University of New York at Cortland

Review
"Eloquent debut." —Booklist “Cara is an appealing, engaging narrator. Surrounded by a well-rounded cast, Cara's journey toward a peaceful, fulfilling life is almost perfectly depicted. A compelling, unusual coming-of-age story." —Kirkus Reviews“[Kristin Bartley Lenz] offers a thoughtful meditation on life after loss with the story . . . Lenz effortlessly explains complicated climbing terminology and intermixes moments of levity with contemplative quotations from naturalists and mountain climbers.” —Publishers Weekly"Although this tale is about one of the most risky and exhilarating sports of all, this book is rather quiet, gradual, and sweet." — VOYA Magazine"This is a richly layered story, visceral and thoughtful in equal parts." —Tim Wynne-Jones, author, The Emperor of Any Place“I loved this book. There's plenty of humor, a hint of romance, and great rock climbing scenes that will have you riveted.” —Anne Rouyer, New York Public Library“Cara’s story is about finding yourself, your family, and your center. Lenz encourages readers to think outside the pages, to find their own place in the world as Cara discovers hers." —Meghan Dietsche Goel, BookPeople, Austin, Texas“A powerful, enveloping story about grief—the deep layers of heartbreak bubbling beneath the surface—and the ways relationships help us through our toughest times." —Kelly Jensen, stackedbooks.org

Maaaaaan.................I gotta tell ya about this great little book that I recently finished reading !Kristen Lenz really knocked it out of the park with this story. This book is a fantastic story of a young lady that grew up unlike most kids that would be classified as "normal". Cara grew up in a "carefree" setting where she learned to embrace everything nature had to offer. She surroundings seemed to be the envy of most any young teenager. After a life changing event, her world seemed to come crashing down around her. Life as she knew it had ended, she was forced to dropped into an environment that seemed to be a prison sentence. Everything she knew to be normal was taken away and she was forced to live in this "picture book world" that was far and away from what she was used to. Turns out that what seemed to be her prison sentence became an open door to a whole new world. Cara was able to experience a whole new world where her past expediences came in quite handy in order to find her new path in life. This young lady learned a lot about herself, her strengths, her assets, her attitude, her family and most importantly, her new path in life.Kristin has laid things out very nicely in this book. The settings were presented wonderfully. It was with very little effort to envision the scenes in this story. I fell in love with her references to other authors and their works (Thoreau). I always love books in a Michigan setting. The timeline seemed to flow in a chronological order. The chapters seemed to be an excellent length. This book belongs in every young adult readers collection. It's not easy "fitting in", but it's very possible and well worth it sometimes.Thank you Kristin Lenz for sharing this little gem with the world. You can find your copy of this book at any large book chain store, more than likely most independently owned book store and many libraries. If they don't have it on their shelves, ask them to get it !I'm sure that they would be glad to get it for you !Big Badge V - Bikers for Books
The Art of Holding On and Letting Go is a solid story. It is placed in the YA genre but could be enjoyed from YA into Adult Fiction. The depiction of the sport of climbing is very powerful and passionate. I would assume that Lenz is a climber. The story of Cara, Kaitlyn and Nick is touching and insightful. It is so real of the trials that young people have to face. As a teachable moment relating to young people it demonstrates how to take the high road and move forward or take the low road and wallow. It also showcases to parents (adults) how their decisions effect their children and the responsibility we owe them. Raising children is not a time to be selfish. The emotions, the message, the story.......very poignant and at the same time entertaining to read. This novel does not have the twist and turns of run of the mill novels. It is a believable, readable book. Highly recommend.
It's so refreshing to see a YA book that is not solely focused on romance. The romance is there, but the real story is about a young girl who learns to accept the difficult challenges of life. Yeah, I know, that's every book, right? But Lenz does it with such clarity, using the protagonists love of rock climbing to show how life is much like the changing face of a mountain, and sometimes you have to completely change your path to find new hope in the face of tragedy. This is a nice, clean read as well. Minor profanity where appropriate (and it was, some characters are just that way!). Great first performance from this author. I can't wait to see more.
I love books that take me to a different world, and in The Art of Holding On and Letting Go, I got to see the world of competitive rock climbing. I know nothing about rock climbing, but it was cool to read about it. That's the backdrop of the book, with the characters laid out on top of it, and I really enjoyed getting to know them. This story has a great friendship, a really sweet romance, and a twisty parental relationship happening. I love, love, love the way the main character changes over time. It's really a wonderful book that I will read again and again. I highly recommend it to anyone, but if you know any teens who love rock climbing, they will not be able to put this book down.
First - what an amazing cover! So beautiful and ties directly to the story. This is one of those books that is so full of emotion and depth it sticks with you long after you finish reading it. Cara is a complex character and the growth that she goes through in the different parts of the book is very real. And the secondary characters are just as full and rich with emotion. Seeing how they interacted together made me root for the different relationships between family and friends. Lenz's writing style pulled me in and made me care about Cara, her new friends, her grandparents and even her parents, although as a parent myself I had a hard time relating to them and their lifestyle. As a YA novel, I can see how it will appeal to that age group or even upper middle grade. And as an adult with children of my own, I enjoyed reading the thoughts and feelings that the YA age groups deals with on an every day basis.
