Isabel Wilkerson can write. Her book reads with a wonderful flow. I will wait for her next book and will read it. I hope it does not take her usual 7 years of research. This book did not "do it" for me. It was soooo loooong --- much of it reads like an almanac . I learned more than I wanted to know about black migration from the south. Wilkerson definitely learned too much in her research, and told it ALL. By the end of the book I didn't care about the characters, Ida Mae, Robert and George were just vehicles to get the facts down on paper. The characters were real enough but the stories were lacking. I did not enjoy this book. It was a struggle to read.

I would give this book a thousand stars if I could. I'm very grateful to the author and everyone she interviewed for sharing these stories with me.This book has deeply affected me. Others have reviewed the content, writing style and extensive research. My comments are of a more personal nature.Until I read this book I would have told you I (a white Southern woman in her 50s) was particularly well-informed about the experience of African Americans, having read almost all of the authors she quoted in the book and many she didn't, including Toni Morrison, Zora Neale Hurston and more contemporary authors, having studied the civil rights movement from my armchair and seeking out African American theater, arts, and friends. I was wrong. I was ignorant. I didn't know about the Great Migration. I had picked up bits and pieces of the extent of Jim Crow from my reading, and I had read them from the perspective of someone who wanted to draw from their experience without being, apparently, very curious about the context of it. This book, these stories, opened my eyes by putting the experiences in chronological order and in context. Without ever being maudlin, divisive, or melodramatic, the author struck a tone that allowed the reader, me, to feel the power of these stories. The author did a great service to the people she interviewed and her readers by allowing us to decide how we feel about these stories. She confidently and brilliantly presented them in a matter-of-fact manner and in the exact words of the person describing their own experience, trusting, correctly that their emotional impact would not be missed. By focusing on every day experiences rather than sweeping generalities, the book allowed me to see the insidious and pervasive nature of Jim Crow, how it affected every moment of every day, how no action could be too insignificant to be viewed as a threat to the social order and therefore to involve the risk of one's life. I had no idea that it was illegal for black people to work outside the cotton fields or orange groves, nor did I have any idea it was so dangerous to leave the south. These lives and stories are deeply, deeply affecting. It helped (although it hurt emotionally) to simultaneously read The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness by Michelle Alexander and The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay, a novel about apartheid in South Africa.I personally thank the author and everyone she interviewed. Deepest gratitude.

If you have a difficult time finding a copy of this book, blame me. I have been telling everyone I know about it and one well-placed friend is buying hundreds of copies to share with friends in Africa who are perplexed by the predicament so many Black Americans find themselves in to this day.The Warmth of Other Suns paints the picture as compellingly and completely as anything I've ever seen or read. As the stories of desperation, ambition and flight unfold, the reader can see just how many ways the American Dream was yanked away, hidden or otherwise made inaccessible to one generation after another. George, for example, could have been so much more than a railroad porter. He wanted to be more. He TRIED to be more. He even went to college at a time when that was all but unheard of for a young black man from the citrus belt of Florida. Danger and deprivation robbed him of that opportunity and all of the possibilities that would have come with it. Instead, he ended up an overworked denizen of substandard housing, with broken knees and bad kidneys from all the years of picking oranges and tangerines then stacking and unloading luggage on railroad runs along the eastern seaboard. Meanwhile, his New York-born-and-raised children -- not privy to the "village" atmosphere of family and child-rearing of George's native Southland -- were left to fend for themselves in the impersonal, take-a-number concrete jungle of an overpopulated city and, with limited options, spent their energies on getting into, or ducking, trouble. The reader can just see the State of Black America take shape. This is an absolute masterpiece by a virtuoso writer. As I neared the end of it, I got the blues, knowing how much I would miss reading it. So, I did what any right-thinking person would do: I read it again. Please do yourself a huge favor and read this. It is, simply, amazing.-Deborah Mathis

The collaborator intended to deliver "As a Man Thinketh" into the hands of women by changing all the pronouns. The message is still the same, but I was distracted by how many male pronouns he missed and one male pronoun that should have remained male, but was changed to female. If you're going to make it gender specific, at least have a good proof-reader to catch your mistakes!

This book goes with me nearly everywhere. I'd read it several years ago and it was helpful in getting me to get outside myself, and change my attitude a bit (oh, what a helpless victim of circumstance and other people's actions I'd been!)Later, I ordered up several copies to hand out. When I was an executive, other women would sometimes come to me with complaints about who did this to them, and why they were helpless to change. Everything I suggested had a 'Yeah, but...' attached to it. Before I hit my mid-40's, I was caught in the drama, feeling responsible and depressed by their circumstnaces. Then I started handing out copies of the book. I'm sure many thought I was nuts, but a couple have actually gotten the message.I'm not a tough-minded broad, but a bleeding heart liberal who finally realized you can help a fellow working-woman to grow not by solving her problems, but by supporting her as she learns she can do it herself. The language in the book (really a booklet) is based on "As A Man Thinketh", but altered just slightly for women. It is invigorating to realize that what is true for the gander is true for the goose.Don't be put off by the style - "Woman is buffetted by circumstances so long as she believes herself to be the creature of outside conditions, but when she realizes that she is a creative power, and that she may command the hidden soil and sees of her being out of which circumstances grow, she then becomes the rightful master of herself."Oh yes! So, here's the message - what you think and do greatly affects what happens to you. You aren't the victim you think you are, so move on!"As A Man Thinketh" and "As I Think" are also available.

Wow, I was so happy to find this little treasure. I have a very old, dog-eared, threadbare copy and wanted to gift a copy to a friend. Thank you!

I liked the fact that they literally took a classic and made it more relatable for women by replacing "he" for "she". I truly enjoyed it!

This small but powerful books goes to the depth of you. You can put on a happy face to the world, but if the thoughts that run through your mind aren't lined up right and monitored carefully, it doesn't change your circumstances. It's written a bit 'high brow', but inspite of the old English wording, you definitely get the message. A basic for anyone seeking to better themselves inside and out. It's nice that they changed the gender wording so it is more personal for women, although you can get the same jist from the original.

This is my second copy of this book. I highly recommend it. This is the book As a Man Thinketh, rewritten so that the he's=she's etc. I feel that in reading As a Man Thinketh, I could think, "that's right men are like that." While, in reading As a Woman Thinketh, I internalize the information more and realize, "that's right, I have been like that." I am aware that recently another version of this book has been made by another author. I have not read it. My preference of reading this book by Dorothy Hulst is in the basics, she's a woman, rewriting this book for women.I find that this book can be a short read, and makes for a better reread. I write in mine and find that adding to the text has been invaluable. I keep it with me and read it at times from the beginning and at times from wherever the book opens for me. The book selectively goes about explaining the quote, "they themselves are the creators of themselves" and the role we as play, in the creation of who we are.

I took this book and broke down into sections via highlighting. Some information is to be used daily, as guide for the morning and in the day. Other information was to sit with and look inside myself to see or dis-cover and pray for it to be either removed or dealt with more deeply. Lastly, other information was given as a means of visualizing on, which I liked. Do not think I planned this at all, it was shown to me to do this and I simply followed.I would like to share the visualization; My garden is the representation of my heart as the book states. I look in my garden and I see that it is dark, filled with lifeless leaves, weeds, and the tree roots seem to still have life. There is no sunshine at the back of my house, windows are dark and haunting. This is what I first see and it saddens me. I pray asking for the removal of whatever it is blocking me from my true inner self. A few days later, I see a bit of sunshine peering through the clouds, I've cleared much of the leaves away, I see a sense of life returning to the back side of the house, the curtains are different; lighter, and where my resentments lay, I've asked for the anger to be removed thus seeing my part in the situation and that spot where weeds were growing is a flower budding as well as buds on the tree. This pamphlet is powerful in that it re-directs a woman to seek herself in her heart and bring what she finds to the surface....my life is truly of my own making.....Look to see what is there, ask for it to be removed, look at your part, and then ask for the change necessary praying all the while...."Change your thoughts and you change your world" Dr. NVPeale

Just as described, quickly shipped. Would buy from again, happy customer

I heard the author speak to our students at a high school assembly, and he was very engaging! After I heard him say he had written a book, I ordered 2, one to read and one to give away to one of our students for graduation. The ideas Leon shares are vital to teens and young adults growing up and being so heavily influenced by pop culture. They must learn to think for themselves...and each decision is more critical than they may imagine. This is a great book for young leaders; it has many timely ideas to live and share with others. I highly recommend this book.

I am a recent high school graduate who is searching for my passion and trying to figure out the answer to the age old question as to what I want to be when I grow up. I was moved by Mr. Quan when he spoke to my high school and I remember feeling empowered after the assembly, I purchased this book to see if it could provide me with any direction and give me reassurance that I am capable of achieving great things, regardless of my circumstances. It seems silly to look for those types of answers in a book, however, this book did remind me that if I take time to process what is thrown my way that I can make good decisions that will lead to a successful and fulfilling life. Thank you Mr. Leon Quan for caring enough to write this book, it is truly inspirational.Fan from Chicago, Illinois

Review

“A masterful psychological study about duty and drive.” ―The Economist, "Books of the Year 2017"“Compelling and elegant . . . [an] exploration of the life of Washington Roebling, the engineer whose energy and ideas got the Brooklyn Bridge built . . . the story not just of two engineers, father and son, but also of a son who survived treatment that, as he wrote in a private memoir at the end of the 19th century, could have led to his death . . . [a] powerful book.” ―The Guardian“Ms. Wagner's writing is graceful, even evocative, conveying a mellow admiration of Washington Roebling that suits the man.” ―Wall Street Journal“A masterful work of research, revelation and gripping narrative. It brings to pulsating life 19th-century New York and New Jersey and manages to be moving, too.” ―New Statesman, "Books of the Year"“The impressive career of [Washington Roebling] is well told in Erica Wagner's captivating new book.” ―New York Post“[An] engaging new biography . . . [a] detailed portrait of a sensitive and tormented man.” ―New York Times Book Review“In this engrossing biography. . . Wagner writes detailed, lucid descriptions of the technological advances that made the bridge possible. . . . Wagner grounds her fine study of the human side of industrial progress in patient devotion to science and craft.” ―Publishers Weekly“With contemporary notes, clippings, and letters, too, [Chief Engineer] makes a fascinating tale . . . A sturdy, illuminating biography.” ―Kirkus Reviews“A well-judged and well-written portrait.” ―Booklist“As we learn from Chief Engineer, Erica Wagner's highly original biography of Washington Roebling, the little-remembered and rather strange man who built it, the feat of raising such a bridge took over a dozen years of his life--and nearly killed him . . . Chief Engineer also sheds light on matters beyond engineering . . . Where she unquestionably succeeds is in bringing to life, and very probably bringing to the public's attention for the first time in generations, the name--and rather peculiar life--of a man who deserves his place on the top tier of the pantheon of engineers. ****” ―The Sunday Telegraph“Chief Engineer was made possible by the discovery of an unpublished memoir at Rutgers University and Wagner has mined it well. She tells the story with the thoroughness of Roebling's calculations: the book is as robust in structure and fine in detail as the bridge itself and, like its subject, unlikely to be bettered. It is immaculately researched, meticulously written but exciting and evocative too.” ―Spectator“In her bravura book about its creation . . . The magnificent book by Wagner, an NS contributing writer, focuses on the two men responsible for building the edifice: John A Roebling and his patriotically named son Washington.” ―New Statesman“Powerful.” ―The Observer“Warm, meticulous . . . Chief Engineer makes a solid case for Washington as a great American hero.” ―Times Literary Supplement“Erica Wagner honours Washington with a fine, sympathetic biography.” ―Literary Review

Dr. A.E. Santaniello’s comments on “Chief Engineer: Washington Roebling, the Man who Built the Brooklyn Bridge.” I have spent my entire life with books and book writers and can agree totally with his evaluation of Wagner’s book. Don’t be put off by the title; while the book does give you an insight into the engineering wonder that is the Brooklyn Bridge as executed, day by day, under Washington Roebling’s exacting eye and enormous capacity for detail, “Chief Engineer” is also the poignant, heart-rendering and always captivating story of “one man’s tenacity in the fact of hardship beyond most people’s imagining.” Fortunately, Erica Wagner has beautifully done the imaging for use: Washington Roebling and his life stand forth as much itself an enduring monument to the human spirit’s capacity to journey through adversity to the stars as the great work that still stands as Wagner writes, “ an extraordinary symbol of nineteenth-century ideals of progress.” This is biography, science and cultural history in one cover. The book answers beautifully Hart Crane’s question in his great poem “The Bridge,” “How could mere toil align thy choiring strings!”

This was an extremely interesting book. The structure was very clear as the narrative was divided around Roebling's early life, his service in the Civil War, and then the stages of his career. I found it fascinating how his father designed the wire and then, as an entrepreneur, father and son leveraged the business from bridges to elevators and beyond. Their contribution to business, ingenuity, and US innovation are really brought to life by Wagner. I also enjoyed reading about Emily Roebling and her accomplishments as well. The level of detail is nicely balanced with a well crafted biographical and cultural narrative.

Read this book and marvel at the genius, sacrifice and courage that carried America to the pinnacle of nations. John Roeblingwas a gifted German immigrant whose fortune was built on a life of penury. Washington Roebling was his brutalized son who dutifully carried his father’s crowning achievement to completion but not without the heroic work of his wife, Emily. In the midst of the work, his health failed. He became an invalid and the project stalled. Emily re-invented herself as self-taught engineer and project director. Her courage and determination carried the bridge to its successful termination.

The book is an entertaining account of the life of an important individual. It has very little detail of his engineering work. Why was he able to build bridges? What did he contribute? What is it about the technology of suspension bridges that makes them the choice for long spans? But the book does talk about Mr. Roebling as a person, and he is kind of interesting. It drags a bit at the end.

This is a great book that combines biography, history and technology. The writer tells an captivating story supported by source documents. This book should be used to teach historical and bibliographic writing. The only suggestion I have is more pictures dealing with how wires, bridges, etc., were made.

Interesting book that adds new information from Washington's writings. Puts John Roebling in a very negative light with little corroborating evidence. Washington seems to have had a complex personality that strongly resented his father. Makes me wonder how much of Washington's writing about him were true. I would have liked to read more about whether the brothers had a similar view of JR.

A very interesting and detailed biography of one of the great men of our country. The history of the Roebling family is one that is an untold story of American culture. Although his father was the founder of the company, Washington made the name famous through his genius and sacrifice building the great Brooklyn Bridge.

Interesting read about the design and construction of the Brooklyn Bridge, and other bridges before that. Washington Roebling had a tortured childhood and adolescent life - mainly due to his father. It's amazing 'Washy' held it together. Interesting reading about the Civil War from Washington Roebling's perspective.
