If you want the A-to-Z of stone sculpting BASICS -- this is the book for you.The author writes a concise, practical, helpful, and entertaining narrative about stone sculpting with soapstone. Most of the information can be applied to other soft-stone sculpting techniques (e.g., alabaster). It covers all the BASICS from selecting tools and the stone -- to roughing, cutting, shaping, and then detailing the stone -- to sanding, oiling, and the final stages of the sculpting process. It even covers repair techniques and ideas that make table set-up more productive.The book is not a 1,000-page encyclopedia of sculpting techniques. In comparison, it is short narrative (just over 100 pages long). Nevertheless, it covers more than most other books I have purchased. If you are looking for a simple, straightforward guide that covers all the basic steps of the sculpting process ... this book is an excellent. Elegant in its approach and lack of superfluous content.The book covers what we need to know. It avoids the tedium and gratuitous rambling found in so-called 'thicker' works written other authors (more pages does not necessarily mean more information).In addition, each step-by-step instruction is accompanied by excellent photographs that not only illustrate the how-to, but are beautiful, quality images as well.Although the artwork examples are more abstract (i.e., non-classical, non-human-form), the author uses his pieces to explain the universal techniques needed for all design disciplines. The information in the book is helpful for any sculpting style: block cutting and shaping, edge work, curves, lines, detailing, smoothing. With these techniques explained, the artist may apply them to their own vision. I tend to more classical designs, and the book will help me and other classic sculptors as well as abstract artists.This is the book I was looking for.

This book is truly one of the only books I have found on carving and sculpting soapstone that is of any use to me. And while the book isn't the best quality as far as professionally editing and printing of books goes, it is THE BEST and one of the rare few on the subject of carving/sculpting soapstone! The author covers everything you'll need to know to carve/sculpt soapstone; from what to look for in the soapstone you'll use to what tools you'll need. It is the best on the subject, bar none! If you have an interest in carving soapstone, this it the book you want!

I am completely self taught in sculpting. I've taken a few tips and tricks in which I learned from you tube, but this book answers those questions we would normally considered.Great book, easy read and the instructions are common scents.

It covers several projects and goes into detail on how to do many things with stone. I would suggest it to any beginner Soap Stone sculptor.

The content of the book is very good. But the quality of the printed version is the worst. It is like a cheap photocopy of the perhaps original version. The quality of the pictures is totally poor. I expected a book with good paper quality and with decent pictures. I am really disappointed and feel like I was robbed.I give 0 stars gor this.

This is a very good book for all who are interested in Transmission Electron and Scanning Electron microscopy.Great reference- instructions are brief but thorough. I would have expected to pay much more to this text.Have already referred it students and colleagues.
