This manga is about a boy who bullies a deaf girl to the point of a school transfer and the events that transpire afterwards.This volume, however, is entirely about everything leading up to the transfer.That works wonderfully, as we get to see the full extent of his abuse and understand why he does it. The story doesn't skip any details for the sake of an "oooooooo" and I love that. The story also does a great job of showing the effects of bullying and what it looks like without it dragging on a lecture. It is instead displayed rather than described so that the reader understands why the girl transfers and can feel the emotion in the story. I can't say much without spoiling, but know that every character in this series plays a part in the development of the two protagonists. (Technically they're both protagonist, they're antagonist to each other though.)Art: The art style is different from a lot of other manga I've read, and can sometimes not be that pleasing, but it's good overall.Characters: I won't lie, so far the only characters worth giving a damn about are Shoya and Shota. This volume is essentially about building them up, so I understand it. Hopefully we get more insight on some of the other side characters, Shoyas mom for example.Overall: This is a great start and I have already put the next 2 volumes in my cart! Completely recommend it!

This review is of the first volume alone, so please keep in mind that is how I am judging the story at this point. It's not often a story can get an immediate reaction out of me. Within a single chapter I had an idea of what the story was going for and realized to my horror that the first volume was basically what would become one of the most difficult but fast reads I have done with any series. I blew through the first volume within an hour or so. It's engrossing but mainly because of how well one can relate to it. As an anime and manga fan I was not a cool kid in middle school or high school. It's unlikely that those interests would ever allow for a "popular" kid in that age. So, bullying isn't something I'm unused to. I have also been working with troubled youth and those with learning disabilities for the past 2 years so this story is a painful reminder of what kind of things adolescents will do to one another in their ignorance.It's not difficult to relate to the story of someone being bullied but this story actually takes place from the perspective of someone who is the bully, a non-traditional setup. If you're anything like me, you may have a hard time getting through the story knowing that the main character you're following is the bully in this particular story. While that dichotomy changes a bit as the volume goes on this first volume isn't an easy story to swallow. But the fact that it is so important is what makes it truly shine. The characters are all real and it's not hard to see how many of these people exist in everyday life, even outside of the Japanese culture. The voices of shame of and guilt that resonant after the ignorance and bullying are given light are all too common and when enough becomes too much it really hits home to see how the dynamic of the story changes up.The art for this particular series is beautiful. In fact, in a day and age where stories like this tend to focus on pretty yet great drawing, this particular series has a bit of grit to it which makes it that much more appealing given the tone of the series.Since this is only the first volume it's hard to say where the story will go from here in terms of quality. As far as beginning volumes though, this one definitely has lasting impact even without the continued plot. I'll be very interested in reading what comes to follow.

A Silent Voice gives a window to bullying that isn't present in much of today's media. Not even teenagers really understand what's happening in their own heads, but this Manga explains the thoughts, feelings, pains, and joys of growing up beautifully. A powerful message embedded in the story is that it is always possible to come back from the brink of losing hope. I would recommend this Manga to anyone.

I love this manga I have only read vol. 1 and soon want to get vol. 2 but this manga is amazingIt's was so funny at first but then got so sad I feel really bad for shoya even though he started it AND OH MY GOSH SHOKO IS TO CUTE AND SO NICE I LOVE HERThis is definitely worth reading.

If you like the movie and want to know more. I recommend you to read the manga. These give more information about the story and make you better understand the characters motives more clearly. This is also a book that I would recommend for people who also don’t read manga too. I think having a story about a girl being bullied would be interesting to them.

I read this series first, and then I started collecting it for my daughter. This manga is not filled with all sunshine and flowers. The main character is believable and flawed and you want to root for him because he's trying to do better. It's very rare that you see a character who starts out being so insensitive, realize his mistake and work so hard at trying to make it right. It makes you want to root for him. I will be gathering all of these volumes because this is an intelligent, well written story.

i absolutely love this beautiful story so much that i'm on a mission to buy all the volumes! i received my order of volume 1 today and it's exactly how it's supposed to be, nothing is dented and nothing is missing, it's perfect. i can't wait to buy the other volumes :)

This is great book for water history buffs. There are a few questionable statements that I could challenge but it is a wonderful concise history of NM water history

This book is ok. I am a beginning photographer looking to get back in the swing of things. I t has been quite some time since I last photographed, but had a brief background. This book- is basically for someone that has no knowledge about photography at all. The book explains the basics of the history of photography and functions of the camera...all in all- the book is just ok. Very little talk about HOW to take black and white photos/ balance- moreless photos/ negatives/ and developing in general. Nothing about DSLR's.... JUST OK.

This is an excellent book, whether you are shooting black & white or color. It covers camera & lens basics as well as posing, exposure, lighting, development, printing, breaking the rules, & more. It would work well for high school or adults. Our college class finds it easily understandable - the many photos show you exactly what is being discussed. It is far better than some of the more expensive books out there!

Really enjoyable bit of urban fantasy noir.Refreshing urban fantasy that eschews the traditional Masquerade style tropes to put its supernatural elements to the foreground, in an almost indulgent manner. Characters have very soap-operaesque names like Rune Saint John, but it once you get past the floweriness of it, you see it works in favor of the narrative. These are not magical beings lurking in the shadows, carrying secrets upon secrets they can never reveal. These people are privileged and conspicuous, at times even ostentatious about their magical power and it helps paint a picture of a very different kind of world, almost a mystical Great Gatsby-like world that seems dangerously on the precipice of self-destructing from its own lack of restraint.The main character, Rune, provides a witty and sardonic counterpoint to his world's rarified existence, and he and his companions craft a quip-a-minute narrative that is very reminiscent of the works of Jim Butcher or Joss Whedon. There is also a very welcome amount of queer representation in the book, always written positively and matter-of-factly but with a great deal of honesty.The book's tarot imagery is also a lot of fun, although you don't need to be well versed in the cards to understand them. Furthermore, the worldbuilding and magic system is incredibly fresh and engaging, and it syncretizes a number of real world occult concepts together into something unique and distinct.The book does have a few problems that I'm willing to chalk up to being standard "first novel" issues; there is a lot of information presented all at once towards the beginning and the story (correctly) takes a "show, don't tell" approach, but it still can be a little disorienting and require you read carefully not to miss a detail for when it is expounded upon later on. There is some dialogue that is a hair too bantery, a few places where the prose is a smidge purple, but there are way more hits than misses. However, by the 90 page mark I was on track and eager for more, with minimal confusion and maintaining a good pace. I fully anticipate the next installments in the series will refine these issues and deliver a really solid, and most importantly, fresh and unique take on the urban fantasy genre that is also rich with lore and engaging, non-preachy queer positivity.

4.5 stars. I gave this book 4.5 stars because it could have used a last pass by the copy editor and I just have to take something off for that lack of attention to detail. Besides this book was so good that the author really should have given it that last bit off polish. Even so, I rarely give five stars and I usually take a full star off for proofing, but I just couldn’t punish this book because it was too excellent. The writing, while not as laugh-out-loud funny as Jim Butcher, was as clever as Jim Butcher. They world was original and imaginative, and well-realized. There wasn’t a lot of superfluous exposition, but I felt I understood how the world worked at all times. In the rare instances that it was a little unclear, it was also unclear to the characters just what was happening, so it was relevant. The plot was fast-paced yet left time for character development, backstory, and exploration of the different relationships between characters. And the characters themselves were engaging, sympathetic, funny, and well-differentiated. My only quibble about them is that I didn’t get a good sense of what most of them looked like. That’s not really important to the integrity of the story, and a lot of readers probably don’t mind, but I like physical descriptions to help me get a good mental picture of the person. Each character had a very different voice, however, so it was easy to differentiate them as one is reading. I liked how the plot turned out, and didn’t see the twists coming. The ending gave a resolution to immediate events but also raised some more questions to be explored in coming books (I really hope this turns into a long series), without leaving a cliffhanger. Lastly, this is a fantasy with a gay protagonist, like Mercedes Lackey’s Last Herald Mage trilogy, not a book about being gay or a gay fantasy romance. Don’t read this if you’re looking for an explicit romance, read it because it’s an awesome urban fantasy. You’ll be disappointed if you’re looking for sex scenes, but you’ll be excited by the story and characters themselves. Just read it. Then go put the next book on your list to be picked up the minute it’s available.
