Very good quality, a classic by this time. Many Goddesses and holidays are included on calendar and "moon month" dates. There is also a lot of space on each date to write in extra holidays that are meaningful to the owner of the book. Correspondences for the Goddesses are included, though not literally the same. Good for invocations, bringing significance to calendar dates. Excellent reference for when the internet is not available.

Nice guide and addition to your library. Not comprehensive but certainly does what it sets out to do.

It got here faery purrily, and it is purry.I like that she includeth so many goddesses from various religious backgrounds (including the saints, as I'm Christo-Wiccan-Pagan,) though I have some qualms with a few of her comparisons, lol.

I like the idea of having a book to refer to regarding Goddess in reference to days of the week and monthly. For someone fairly new to the Goddess, you might have trouble navigating through the book or finding the proper use for it. Should probably get this book if you are not a newbie.

I have the paperback copy of this book and am ordering my second copy. My original is very worn. I have been using it for the last many years (nearly ten) to collect inspirational quotes in. I write one quote per day and it is nearly completed!Now I am buying a second copy to transfer the old quotes into, change some around and so forth. I had been putting them in almost randomly, but I want to rewrite them to correlate better with the Goddess days that Diane cites.

I don't see how I lived without it!!!

A birthday present for a great-granddaughter. She really enjoys reading and likes the What Was series. Again Amazon has a wonderful selection of books and the price is right.

I don't know why I didn't realize this was a chapter book! I ordered it to read to my class, but realized after ordering it, that it would be a bit over their heads. It was a good read for me to brush up on some history though.

My son really enjoyed this book and had fun learning more about the first Thanksgiving. He is 6 and we read it together. I enjoyed learning more about it with him too. This was a good informative book.

In Chicken with Plums, she turns from autobiography to biography, telling the story of her great uncle, Nasser Ali Khan.Nasser was a renowned Iranian tar (a Persian stringed instrument, like a lute) player whose music was his life. In a heated argument, his jealous wife destroys his tar. When he can't find a suitable replacement, he despairs unto death. As the days pass, Nasser loses more and more of his will to live, while reflecting on some good memories from his life.Satrapi tells the story with sensitivity and humor, but it did not move me like perhaps it should have. Ultimately I was not moved, and not terribly impressed with the stark, minimalist black and white presentation. I was left with the feeling that Chicken with Plums was an admirable labor of love by Satrapi, who wanted to honor the memory of her great uncle. Chicken with Plums is worth a look for Satrapi fans, and for fans of graphic novels, but the general audience, me included, can probably take it or leave it.

Drawn in bold black and white, Marjane Satrapi's graphic novel illustrates the moving and disturbing life and last days of her uncle, Nasser Ali Kahn. He was a famous Iranian musician, loved for his virtuosity, and the sensitivity with which he played his beloved tar.It's a tale of how a man's happiness was gradually eroded by his culture, loss, suppressed feelings, and unrealizable expectations.The story starts with an older man in black walking down a city street. He encounters a slender woman with her grandchild. He hesitates. Asks if her name is Irane. She doesn't recognize him. Wonders how he knows her name. He, Nasser, apologizes and walks on to a friends business where he hopes to buy a replacement for his recently broken tar.We later learn that the broken tar had special meaning for Nasser. When he was a young man, the parents of the woman he'd fallen in love with forbade her to marry him because he was only a musician. Losing her plunged him into deep depression. He had difficulty playing. Nasser's tar master tried to console him by telling him, "To the common man, whether you're a musician or a clown, it's one and the same. The love you feel for this woman will translate into your music. She will be in every note you play." He then gave Nasser his own tar and instructed him to go on playing.From then on, Nasser's joy was his music. His playing thrilled his audiencesSince childhood he'd been unable to meet the conventional expectations of others. His mother's, his brother's, his teachers', the parents of the woman he loved, his wife, his children.His mother urged him to marry a woman he didn't love so that he would forget his loss. Although the woman he married did love him, she resented his music. His children, influenced by their mother's attitude, became estranged from him. This drove him further and further into his music.After he failed to find another tar equal to his broken one, feeling that without that tar and his music there was nothing else he wanted, Nasser came to the conclusion, "To live, it's not enough to be alive." He decided to die.This where the novel really begins. Through Satrapi's masterful construction, we are able to piece together what we need to understand who Nassar was, and why he would make this tragic choice.Satrapi reveals Nasser's life and character by skillfully rearranging temporal events - picking up a incident, then dropping it, and then weaving it in later on in the story with new threads. She loops the past into the present, the future into the past. Sometimes, from frame to frame, she switches back and forth between the past and the present, showing how a character's unhappy memories and lingering hurt become emotional IEDs on the path to true understanding.There are many lenses through which to "see" another person, many ways in which to know them. At Nassaer's mother's funeral, a mystic tells him the story of five men in the dark trying to describe a whole elephant from the part each has touched. "We give meaning to life based upon our point of view," he tells Nasser. In Chicken With Plums, through characters and events, Satrapi gives us the whole elephant.As the novel progresses, Satrapi's drawings become more expressive and surreal, adding more decorative touches. Her work resembles animation, almost cartoonish, but her story has the depth of a great novel. She has the timing of a film maker, knowing just what to show when, and how to keep the mystery and tension to the end.Chicken With Plums has touched me deeply. It's a heart breaking story of love on many levels, fulfilled and unfulfilled. I believe Nasser died of a broken heart. Without Irane and without his music, he could not find a way to be in this world.

Boring book

I have got a second hand book which looks like new. I have received it in the time frame that I supposed to and I am happy with my purchase.Chicken with Plums

This is more than one remove from Persepolis I and II (which I also loved) but well-told, well-drawn, and moving. Reminding me of Persian miniatures and medieval Persian romance, it tells the story of Nasser Ali Khan, a true musician, his love, and his death. There are also some fascinating asides into the lives of other family members. Having lived two years in Tehran, I loved it because it reminded me of the culture I loved. Ms. Satrapi's work never fails to move and surprise me; more, please!

I must admit to disappointment; I was not expecting a graphic novel (I'm old: translate story in cartoon style). I did love the movie that morphed from this story and since this book was not expensive I am quite content to pass it on to others who may enjoy it more. Either I was unobservant or this was not described as a graphic novel. If the latter, this needs to be remedied. I was expecting some really exquisite description of the characters themselves and a graphic novel simply cannot fill this bill.

If the medium is the message then this pamphlet packs a wallop. Traders have profited from the wisdom of Dickson G. Watts for over 132 years since this small volume was published in 1880.The book is divided into two parts. Part 1 addresses "Speculation as a Fine Art" and part 2 consists of four chapters under the heading "Thoughts on Life". The former is divided into three short chapters: "What is Speculation," "Laws Absolute" and "Rules Conditional." The latter is a set of memorable short sayings and quotes subdivided into "Life," "Business", "Society" and "Language."Watts starts by examining the morality of speculation and its relationship to gambling. The difference: "speculation presupposes intellectual effort; gambling, blind chance." He then describes his purpose to identify the essential elements or rules of speculation which must be adapted to an individual's personality. Finally he looks at the qualities that define a successful speculator such as self-reliance, judgment and prudence (risk-aversion).His "Laws Absolute" or trading rules are only four in number. His most famous rule, quoted in Edwin Lefevre's "Reminiscences of a Stock Operator," is when worried about a big position you have on "sell down to the sleeping point." The next section titled "Rules Conditional" contains six additional guidelines to be modified by "circumstances, individuality and temperament." Although at first glance Watt's approach may seem an oversimplification not relevant in today's complex world, by way of comparison one of the top traders of our time, Ed Seykota, has distilled his key trading rules into only six "essentials" in wallet-card format (available via his website). Considering that even in the 21st century a few rules if followed may protect the trader from ruin while leaving his upside open, we may not want to dismiss Dickson G. Watts as somehow out of touch with modern trading.The second section "Thoughts on Life" contains many quotable and some humorous sayings. For example, "Fools try to prove that they are right. Wise men try to find when they are wrong." That reminds me of a statement by Paul Tudor Jones, "Every day I assume every position I have is wrong."Watts was a founding member and later President of the New York Cotton Exchange, the first organized commodity exchange in the USA. Whether he originated the ideas found in Speculation as a Fine Art or merely compiled them from experience is not known and does not matter. His insights into trader psychology and his comments about the risk of ruin suggest that he truly understood the trading arts from personal experience as a floor trader and later as President overseeing the exchange.As a general principle I like to read original source material whenever possible to compliment and give depth to modern books on any subject. Truly, "Speculation as a Fine Art" is an original source of trading wisdom that is as relevant today as in 1880 when published.

I you invest in anything this book is well worth the read. For years I have kept of journal of quotes I thought were invaluable to investing. I'd refer back to them form time to time. Mr. Watts has written his own thoughts down and published them and they are insightful. I read somewhere that this was one of Jesse Livermore's favorite books. I bought it and read it and refer back to it.

"There is no royal road to success in speculation....Those who make for themselves or others an infallible plan delude themselves and others." The best book on speculation you can read. The above passage is as true today as it was in 1880 when Watts wrote it.There is some great information in this book. The end result is that a trader has to find what works for him. This way he will keep the most important trait in trading, his head. Staying calm when others panic, keeping a cool head under all conditions, is the most important trait a trader can have. The guidelines spelt out in this book help a trader develop into a trader that can keep his/her cool.This book was quoted several times in "Reminicences of a Stock Operator" for a reason. Livermore greatly admired Watts as a trader, and so should we. A great book, a real classic.

I had to add this book to my library due to it being mentioned by the cloaked "Jesse Livermore" in reminiscences of a stock operator. I am a successful trader and read all things related to Jesse Livermore. This book only consisted of 43 pages and a nice card board cover. It contains seven pages of stock trading advice, yes 7, that is it. The remaining pages have some proverbs about life, which if you are mature in years you will probably find light reading. One of the proverbs is "If speculation keeps you up at night, sell down to the sleeping point". which is excellent common sense advice. The stock trading tips are:1. Never over trade2. Never reverse a position and go the other way.3. Run Quickly or not at all.4. Reduce your position when doubtful.5. It is better to average up than down in a position (I completely agree)6. Do not ignore public opinion.7. Sell in weak markets.8. Always factor in chance in your trading.This is probably one of the first books ever written on speculating so it may have been why it was mentioned, their were no others. I would say skip this one and buy any of these to really learn in detail about speculating:"How I made $2,000,000 in the stock market" Darvas"How to trade in stocks" Livermore"How to make money in stocks" O'Neal

Yeah, like others have said, a little shallow but for advice - great stuff in general. It just didn't grab me to rate it higher.

This book quite literally explores what it is for human beings to suffer. The authors truly explore a part of human existence nurses witness every day. It does not shy away from suffering and by understanding it tries to relieve it. It recognizes the energy it takes to be a nurse caring for suffering and dying patients and how painful this can be. This book is an excellent resource for any nurse working in a setting where palliation and hospice are within the patient's trajectory of care.

Great book, though when you read about the pain chapter, it makes you realize how much has changed in the last 10 years.

I knew Meredith Holley's book would be good. I first encountered her online, on a book website, and her various book reviews/reports/responses/reactions immediately became among my favorites. She would take these complex, literary, dense, difficult books and relate them to understandable analogies or personal stories that led me to seek out the same books in hopes of the same results. After a few attempts, I realized that sometimes what I desired to read were HER words, not necessarily the books she wrote about.In a medium where one's thoughts expressed through typed words were the means of connection, not the physical appearance or sometimes-distraction of voices, many of us ended up sharing more of ourselves than we normally would if we'd met in person first. It was there that a number of us compared stories and I was shocked at how common stalking and harassment was as an experience for women. All of us! To varying degrees and severity, but 100%. It was also clear that most of us had shrugged it off but these experiences still impacted our reactions and thoughts.This book. It's like Meredith read the stories of our lives and then related them to understandable analogies and her own experience, hah. It may not be that we want to examine our lives, but she can help re-frame certain parts of it. There was a time when I was frightened, and googling for a course of action, and discouraged by the lack of recourse, and downgrading my experiences since it could've all been so much worse, and I wish I could've had a simple explanation or a guide through those days. She gives an orderly, useful (!) approach and also offers to help directly.I haven't been in contact since those halcyon-ish book website days, so I'm saddened to learn she's writing firsthand about Career Defense. I'm glad she's sharing it, and turning it all into tools for the rest of us. I do remember that quality about her, the curious listening and gentle questions to learn more about the other, and in the same process letting us learn about ourselves. She's more than a fantastic human being - she's spreading it to help us be more fantastic ourselves.
