Foreskin's Lament is a non-fictional coming of age story about Shalom Auslander, an Orthodox Jew raised in the 60's by a tyrannical father and a worried mother. He was taught to be very afraid of God and His wrath. Anything you do wrong, and the author lists them throughout the book, and someone dies, or someone is hurt. Shalom expects it at all times.Despite being in an unhappy home, Shalom does his best to ease tensions in the household - from doing Nixon impressions to asking his father about tools. His father is a master carpenter, and we aren't told how he makes his living, but do know he doesn't measure up to most of Shaloms other schoolmates fathers, who are doctors and lawyers. He certainly doesn't measure up to his wife's (Shaloms mother) two famous Rabbi brothers. So Shaloms dad takes his misery out on his sons.All through the book, Shalom writes of how he first fears God, then begins to test Him. He starts to eat non-kosher foods and takes off his Yamika, just to see what God will do. He looks at pornography, disobeys the rules of the Torah, and goes out on the Sabbath. This continues for years, he can do what he wants, it seems, because dressed in his Orthodox garb, he is invisible. He is able to shoplift whatever he wants, because the security guards at Macy's are watching the black kids, not the conservative Jewish boy.And the book is funny. Very witty & clever. The author processes his childhood religion and makes the bad parts go away. He doesn't forgive his parents at all. He, as an adult man, husband, and new father, takes charge of his life and moves away from his religious beginnings.I loved reading this book and recommend it to anyone that enjoys reading memoirs.

Shalom Auslander writes a humorous, raunchy memoir, full of Yiddish (which I found hilarious), with brutal honesty. If you are touchy about Heshem, if you lack a solid sense of humor, you may want to avoid this memoir. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about his life, told by interweaving stories from his young adulthood and his mishegas adolescence. Heshem for Auslander is a nit-picky, OCD, deity, who harasses him for every tiny violation written in the Torah. It's a miserable relationship, yet Auslander makes us laugh, especially at ourselves.

If you've lived around or have been exposed to Orthodox Jews (when you live in the NY metro area, its hard not to), this book will relieve that some of their young boys are just like non-Jewish boys of that age. The love of girls, cars, porn is and weed is universal across socio-economic and religious groups.The author's epiphany moment when faced with choosing to circumcise his new born Son also transcends religions as many of our generation wrestle with the decision to raise our children in the organized religion of our parents.I'm not knocking organized religion, however in some instances it comes with allot of baggage.

One of the best books I've read this year, although I kept it upside-down during the whole day and a half it took to read because of the offensive cover design. I didn't want my family to see it, ha.Witty, intelligent writing - reduces complex problems of evil to direct, confrontational, sparring matches with a vindictive, childish, anger-challenged, trickster God. Very Jewish and ultimately a very sad book.

I enjoyed reading this book-wasn't sure at first-but felt it was an interesting thought provoking book. I think it would be difficult for those who are not of the Jewish faith or who do not know the more orthodox traditions that some may find difficult to understand. Some of this was definitely fiction, but it is hard to know what what and what wasn't. Some of the explanations the protagonist said he learned from his orthodox education I was very unfamiliar with and found it hard to believe he would actually be taught certain things, but then it could have happened. On the other hand, the theme is about a dysfunctional family and a son who had to deal with this and deal with principles of faith that he did not accept- a very real situation today. This book is worthy of discussion with others. The book was well written but in places a little repetitive and lengthy. I read it on my phone.

This book is not for everyone, but it was definitely for me. Auslander's remembrances of growing up in an Orthodox-bubbled world is part Truman show, and part tragedy. Being forced to fear, fear, fear the almighty leader of the Jewish religion didn't sit well with the author, who saw too much wrong with the world to believe that its creator could be such a great being if all he did was kill people who disagreed with the biblical word from up high. This short memoir contains powerful tales of a childhood rebelling, first quietly and then loudly, at the religious chains thrust upon the author. There are moving parts, outrageous parts, and sad parts, and overall the book is very powerful.I normally hate memoirs, but found this one to be very entertaining.

"Foreskin" was outstanding. There were days I sat in the garage listening to the CD instead of going in the house. Having had something of a similar upbringing (yeshiva, though nothing like "Black Hat," I certainly identified with Auslander's predicaments, though I can't say I took the same steps to deal with them. "The Blessing Bee" is a classic and his one-on-one battles with God (or G-d) are poignant, agonizing and hilarious, too. The author's narration works, too. First, I thought he was too flat, but his passions and predicaments more than came through. This was a most entertaining and wonderfully nostalgic read.Mike L. Deerfield IL

The book was supposed to be published by The Folio Society and it was instead an inexpensive printing that was part of a series. Very disappointed and it has made me lose confidence in the accuracy of the descriptions on Amazon.

While I was familiar with the story, having seen the film and listened to audio dramas based on this book, I had not read the actual book until now. BY Wells' classic tale of an evil man who discovered the secret of invisibility, his reign of terror and retribution are still a great story. I read this book using immersion reading while listening to the audiobook. The great Scott Brick masterfully narrated this tale in a beautiful British accent. The book has added scenes of filler, which are normally left out of the adaptations. I would love to see a modern production, faithful to the book. Once it gets going after a bit of slowness in the beginning, it is fast paced and exciting. The Invisible Man is often his own worst enemy, due to his temper, vanity and greed. Glad to check this classic off my list.

I love H.G. Wells! He was so ahead of his time with his science fiction.I decided to read this book because I recently read The Madman's Daughter trilogy, the first of which is a retelling of this book (which I highly recommend by the way!). It was very interesting to see what that author took from the original.This book was both thought provoking and absolutely creepy. It's a pretty short and easy read and totally worth it!The book itself is also beautiful and looks great on my bookshelf

This is NOT the book in the image nor is it Folio Society. While the image is a folio society book it’s not the Invisible Man. The book I received was of a quality (for lack of a better word) I’d expect to find in the youth section of an underfunded public library. I have since bought the Folio Society edition of The Invisible Man from ebay

This story was a bit shallow for a classic piece of literature. It was dark all the way through. The Invisible Man was an evil character with no redeeming characteristics. Unlike the monster in Frankenstein who originally had the human desire for companionship and acceptance, this character had sinister motives and nothing else. The only part of this book that I found interesting was the discussion and explanation of how invisibility was achieved. Other than that, I was happy to finish the book so I could read something else.

I knew the story already, having seen a movie version of it when I was a child. I didn't remember that the invisible man had character flaws which led him to hurt others and to think only of himself. I kept thinking as I read how strange it would be to actually meet an invisible person. Very unique and entertaining story.

The story itself earns a 5-star. BUT...this version on Kindle is practically unreadable, as the formatting is messed up. Paragraphs frequently broken into chunks, frequently a single word to a line regardless of the font or size font used. There are several other $.99 versions of this classlc available on Kindle, all of which seemed to have avoided this formatting pitfall. Buy one of those instead.

The message of this book still rings true today. In a world with ever-changing technology and scientific advances, we must still be careful of the impact of those changes and advances. Their effects can be far-reaching and sometimes can be irreversible.As to the writing in this book, the author creates a vivid picture in the mind of the reader of each character and their actions, building the tension with each page. In the days before technology brought us the "moving pictures" of the movies, this author was taking his readers for a suspenseful, action packed ride with only their imagination to paint the pictures in their minds. It is rich in the details of each person, each room, each scene that is before you. I pictured them all in my mind - making my own "movie of the mind". I have seen several movies that were based on this book in the past, but had never read the original book by H. G. Wells. The reading of this book made the best "movie" of all.

Purchased the book for my daughter (and myself as I lack understanding in the sport of field hockey). The book is well written and provides a clear explanation of the sport. I have found it to be very helpful to advance my knowledge. My daughter has enjoyed the book as it outlines various drills to improve her skill set. The drills are clearly outlined and very detailed with great visuals. She has been playing for 5+ years (club and local teams) and she indicated that this book has helped her. She also noted that this book will continue to be beneficial in the future as it is very comprehensive. Definitely would recommend.

A thorough guide starting from the beginning to cover sound basic skills through to some advanced play. It’s a good reference for applied technique for to assist coaches. A few more diagrams would have made it easier rather than reading an instruction a number of times. ( for those who are time poor)

Just taking on a coaching position at Club level this book has been very helpful for both myself and our new players, it is also very easy to understand.

Don't know anything about field hockey, this looks like an excellent book. Bought it for my daughter who would like to get into the sport as she gets into high school.

I purchased this book for my Granddaughter (Age16) who is exceptionally good at the sport. While still in the 10th grade, she was elevated directly to her High School's Varsity. When she entered the 11th grade, she became Co-Captain, although not a Senior. She has told me that the book was a great help, and that even with her current knowledge, she has picked up pointers that have helped her improve her game.

I played field hockey about 9 years ago and recently my arm has been slightly twisted to coach middle school hockey. I had forgotten all the basics of the game and this book is a quick to the point guide. I like the pictures it provides and the drills. My goalie coach who had never even seen a game before has been able to use the book and apply it to coaching my goalies. I definitly recommend this book whether you are a coach who is looking for a break down of skills or a player looking to improve your game.

I read both volumn 1 and 2 both were very comprehensive full of information and history.They are not novels and don't look for a story line. Its more like reading a text book but I found it hard to put down at times. I was looking for specific ties to my family members in history and was thrilled when the family was mentioned several times.There may be a volumn 3 not sure.

This is a good book with some great information but it tends to be a little draggy at times. Maybe a little too much detail, but the facts are correct.

Extremely well written and researched. My only complaint is that the book cut off (ended) in mid sentence and does not include the appendix, which is extremely informative, which is found in the hard cover.

This magnificent guide book of 240 pages may be the only one dedicated solely to Luxembourg. In the past I have seen one published by Michelin, but it was nowhere near this good. Other guide books allot 20 to 40 pages buried in the back of books on Belgium or The Netherlands. It is filled with numerous helpful maps, excellent descriptions on hundreds of sights and attractions, beautiful photos, and helpful contact information and times of operations. Luxembourg was the scene of much of the Battle of the Bulge in World War II. It has a very large number of memorials to our American troops and General George Patton. It is home to Hamm Cemetery, where the General and over 5,000 of our troops are buried, the largest piece of US soil outside our country. It is also one of the three headquarters countries for the European Union. I highly recommend this book for anyone traveling to this area of Europe, especially to someone of Luxembourg ancestry.

Nice book that is JUST Luxembourg and not Lux plus some other country. We are new residents in Luxembourg. After reading through this book, it now stays in our car so that when we "happen upon" something, we can look it up quickly in "the" book.

Took this with me to Luxembourg this summer. Very helpful travel book. Used it in the capital city and in the countryside.

Reasonably detailed, but not much depth and the maps are hard to follow

This is an excellent guide! I have found none other that goes into such detail on this tiny country. I am leading a hiking trip there next year and this has an amazing amount of info. Most books deal with all the Benelux countries and give Luxembourg short shrift.

Having read many historical novels about Anne Boleyn, I was not expecting to learn anything new from this one; I purchased it because I am a fan of Alison Weir's writing. However, I was wrong. This novel is written from Anne's perspective, and delves into her motivations for her actions toward others and the choices she made. It helps the reader see more clearly the quandaries Anne was often placed in my her family, by Henry VIII, and by the general attitude toward women at that time. Although we all know what happened to Anne at the end, some of the details of the execution scene as written by Ms. Weir caught me by surprise as I had never before considered how the method of execution affected the victim in the final moments. I greatly admire the extent of Ms. Weir's research and her attention to detail, which makes even the fictional parts of her novels seem rational and real.

I started to read this book on my flight to London. My 4rd day in London I toured the Tower and had tears in my eyes, because this book made the events that happened in Anne's time so real. I was transported to the 16th Century by the words in this story. If you like historical fiction this is a must read. If you don't like historical fiction... well, you will now.

I have read many of Allison Weir's historical novels, and I must say I was somewhat disappointed with this book. It seemed to attempt to show Ann Boleyn in a more positive light, but vacillated between "likable" Ann and "spiteful" Ann. Also some of the dialogued did not appear to be relevant to that time period. Not one of Ms. Weir's best books.

I found that I was unable to finish reading this book. The author clearly does not find anything redeemable in her subject and therefore creates a character who represents the stereotypical "other" woman, thus she presents us with a one dimensional portrait without any depth of character.

Fabulous, so well written and interesting.Weir breaks it down into each year, and although I have been reading novels about Anne Boleyn for almost 45 years, I still learned so much!I understood all the history, politics, behavior and religious aspects much better.The whole gradual shift of originally very much believing and feeling he needed to ask permission from Rome for the divorce - to eventually casting the Pope off so he could have all the money and power for himself. And all the concerns about who might go to war with England if Henry took action with the divorce or with his newly created brutal laws, or his increasingly worsening treatment of Queen Katherine, or Princess Mary.Anne was the one responsible for everyone in England to be able to read the bible in English. That is HUGE. She really was a major contributor to to reformation in that way, and very well intended wanting the money from the monasteries to continue to go to education and to helping the people -- rather than just into Henry's depleted coffers.Cromwell of course toadied to Henry and did zero to help Anne with this goal, and indeed it created a dangerous schism for power between them at a time when hers was weakening because she had not been able to bear Henry a living son.I also think Weir was correct is much of what she wrote about how Henry was just very ordinary looking if you took the trappings of wealth off of him, and he didn't have the aura of fame that comes with Kingship. Everyone else has always praised him as so good looking, but I agree with Weir, that's probably just some literal posterior kissing when flattery could get you everything at court.The book also made what happened with her sister Mary very interesting, as it makes her out not only NOT a slut or loose woman, but someone who was naive, and completely taken advantage of.What has always puzzled me is that the nobles were so utterly power mad and fearful of Henry that they never said to themselves that if Anne didn't have sexual relations with Henry for six long years -- how completely unlikely it ever was that she would have ever cheated on him!This was not a woman who was interested in sex, and she held out for a king! She would never have lowered herself to sleep with someone of lesser rank.Henry who I personally believe was a lousy selfish lover with a small member to boot (making a woman happy wasn't seen as important at that time - and indeed a woman being innovative or taking initiative was considered immoral behavior by Henry).I think Henry did have impotence problems sometimes at his age and with his weight , drinking and health problems (the infected leg).However, he but was potent enough during their 3 year marriage to still manage to impregnate Anne at least 4 separate times.He just wanted to get rid of her, and manufactured a total lie that was so shameful that the public who love drama and gossip were willing to ignorantly believe him - and he would look like the wronged victim. It was disgusting and she tried valiantly to defend herself, but there was no hope.Anne had so gradually and frequently encouraged Henry to be cold hearted to his friends/advisors and the people he loved, (Wolsey, Queen Katherine, Princess Mary, Fisher, More, etc.) that eventually that now massive brutal coldness got turned on her.Karma in action, sadly enough.I did read somewhere recently that the reason for the delay in Anne's execution was that favor was rising in public opinion about her, because there were enough people who could figure out that the charges were ridiculous, and this concerned Henry with regard to his image. Pretty different to be exposed as a deliberate monster of an innocent 33 year old woman instead of a cuckolded husband!Henry and Cromwell were afraid she would make a public statement on the scaffold skillfully, wittily, incisively criticizing him and exposing what a sham the adultery charges really were, and how it was all about trying to get a son from jane Seymour now.They didn't want all the foreign dignitaries to make historical notes of this to take back to their masters all over Europe.Instead, Cromwell over that 36 hour or so delay denied entrance invitations (? who would be allowed to be admitted) to many, and made sure the crowd was quite small indeed who was allowed to witness the execution.Weir disputed this, believing maybe a thousand people attended, but I don't think so....The one thing where I believe Anne triumphed over Henry despite his cutting her head off, is that her daughter Elizabeth - not the son he so craved and was increasingly fanatic for his whole life about needing to have for the succession - was the greatest ruler England has ever known.It was a fabulous fabulous book, as was her earlier book about Katherine, and I am thrilled she is doing this series about each of Henry's six wives! She really makes them come alive and does it so well, with a new and very believable insight.THANK YOU ALSION WEIR!

This is definitely one of Alison Weir's best novels! I put it into the same category as the previous novel in the six book series on the wives of Henry VIII, "Katherine of Aragon." The author's extensive research on the Tutors, which has been conducted over the past two decades, combined with her increasing talent as a novelist makes this book a delight to read. I found out much I did not know about Anne's life before she went to Katherine's court as a young woman and caught the eye of the King. The character of Anne is particularly vivid, as the entire book is told from her point of view. We see her go from an intellectually curious young girl to a woman in love (just not with Henry!) to an ambitious adult with a desire for the crown that helped her overcome her lack of desire for King Henry. It is a scenario that is very believable in the hands of this master scholar. The final episode in the book is surprisingly shocking and the woman still has our sympathy. Well done, Ms Weir, well done!

I've read quite a few of Weir's books, non-fiction and some of the fiction she'd done before this series on Tudor Queens. This book just doesn't even seem like it's written by the same person. I need to go back and re-read the 1st one in this series, because I can't remember whether I felt the same way about the writing. The book Weir wrote years ago, about Jane Grey, Innocent Traitor, was excellent, and I enjoyed The Lady Elizabeth, as well. I just finished reading the 3rd in this Tudor Queens series, on Jane Seymour, and it didn't seem up to snuff either. I'm glad I was able to borrow that one digitally, rather than pay for it. I was really excited when this series started & planned on buying all of them, but after reading the Anne Boleyn installment, I changed my mind. I feel like either she's dumbed down her writing quite a bit, or someone else is doing the actual writing. It's just bizarre, how different the quality of writing seems.

I am young in the workforce by definition. I work in the Silicon Valley tech scene and very quickly promoted to a leadership position as our young company scaled. I personally think management books are very bias and you need to be careful on which lessons you heed and by whom. Additionally, this book strays away from individual perspectives on the subject and focuses more on the qualified research over decades of material presented to the Harvard Business Review. Personally speaking, the book taught me the most on leadership and management and I 100% performed at my peak after applying these principles with my team. I will not spoil anything, but there is one specific lesson I could reference form this publication that handedly changed my career, but I'll save it for those determined to strengthen their corporate arsenal as I did.

The first two articles authored or coauthors by Goleman don't taste good. The point he was trying to make might be alright. But as he was trying to sell emotional intelligence so hard, he used so much absolute terms and strong languages without clearly presenting the case. It feels too much as a sales pitch. I didn't feel I got much after reading those two articles. It was just another popular business article and lacked substance.But I do like many other articles. Still worth the time. But I should have skipped the first two.

Excellent primer on what Emotional Intelligence is and why it's so important in the workplace. Quick read and will allow you to decide what areas you need improvement to focus on. Must read.

It's a great and easy read. I love the HBR books so worth the money and time it takes to read them.

This is a good quick topical view of emotional intelligence. If you are looking for something more in depth about eq then this isn't the book.

This is a classic. I read it and loved it. For me I don't get why the iq score doesn't show other types of intellect.
