I purchased this book after it was recommended by a librarian. This is an absolutely amazing book! It's fun to read and even more fun when read with movements and noises added. I love they was able to keep both my 18-month-old and seven-year-old engaged while reading. I didn't even think that was possible! This book would be an excellent addition to any home library and a fantastic book to gift to a teacher. We love this book.

This little story is of a little old lady who walks down the road and starts to get followed by a pair of shoes, then a pair of pants..etc...until an entire outfit of clothing is following her and culminates with a giant jack o lantern that in the end does scare her a bit, but she uses her smarts and figures out a way for the head and outfit to be happy scaring, while being useful. Cute story, but will get old fast.

This is a great book. Great for ages 2 all the way up. It’s always hard buying a book without holding it and reading it for yourself but this is a great book!! They also interact with the book while you read. I have kids 3,5,6, and 8. They loved reading it

I am an early childhood educator so I have read numerous children's books over the years. My three year old grandson absolutely loves this book. He enjoys joining in with reading the repetitive phrases. What a wonderful, interactive book for the fall season. I consider this a five star book for sure!

I was read this book throughout my childhood around Halloween and when my kid's second Halloween rolled around I decided we needed a copy for our home. Just as cute as I remember it, but two years old may be a little young for this book. She still listens to me read it, but I still think it's a bit wordy and advanced for her age. I'm sure in the not too distant future she will be obsessed with it.

ISBN 0064431835 - Printed in the U.S.A.. Paperback, 29 pages. By Linda Williams, illustrated by Megan Lloyd. Published by HarperCollins in 1986. Marked for ages 3 to 7.A brave little old lady, walking home through the woods, is confronted by two shoes. She informs the shoes that they don't scare her and continues on, with the shoes following behind. When she meets up with pants, a shirt, gloves and a hat, and, finally, with a pumpkin head, she repeats herself, but she does walk a bit faster after each meeting. Closing the door at home behind her doesn't end things, as the set of clothes comes knocking. The clothing, particularly the pumpkin head, are very sad that they're unable to frighten the lady, but she has a wonderful idea that gets everyone's approval. This isn't, exactly, a Halloween book. The carved pumpkin head gives it that appearance, and the fact that it's a scary, tense, story, adds to that impression, but more than Halloween, this is an AUTUMN book. It is perfect for those days when the sun sets early and there's a little hint of coming frost in the air - as long as your young reader isn't easily scared! While the idea of being followed around by clothes is mildly amusing to me, as an adult, it'll be your call for your kid, whether or not he/she is likely to enjoy a little scare. The ending, good for a laugh, takes the sting out of the scary lead-up, if knowing that helps you decide. The text is very good. The following that the little old lady accumulates grows and becomes more ominous and the text conveys that very well, building the tension as the reader roots for the little old lady to escape the menacing laundry pile behind her. The illustrations, set in boxes on each page, are smaller - sometimes much smaller - than they needed to be, or even should have been. This is a perfect book for full page and two-page spreads overflowing with detail. For that type of imagery, see Halloween Night instead. The illustrations are my only complaint, however. This is a really good, slightly scary story for young and beginning readers who will probably prefer having a comforting adult do the reading - it is four solid stars good, it's just not five wow stars great.- AnnaLovesBooks

This was a great book that invited partication from kids. I volunteered to be a mystery reader at my granddaughters second grade class the week before Halloween. Sounded great when I volunteered, but then I started to get really nervous. By trade I teach college students— what did I know about second graders? So I called my sister who taught second graders for nearly 40 years. This was the book she recommended, and it was perfect. All the kids participated and we had great laughs and a good time. Recommend this book, particularly around Halloween.

My daughter loves Halloween and naturally she loves this book. Her preschool teacher recommended it to us as it was the book of the month. I like the little old lady’s confidence. It’s great to teach that to our young girls whenever we can.

I have been pleasantly surprised with this Sourcebook, since the first dealing with the Jihad(Dawn of the Jihad) was such a disappointment. The actual translations of the Egyptian Book of the Dead, aka Egyptian Book of Coming Forth By Day, are the usual translations that have been read many times before. Nothing new in this so-called "translation," although the tables of Egyptian hieroglyphs used in the Book of the Dead are useful for reference. But Seleem's main purpose is to convince the reader that the founders of Egypt came from Atlantis, to which he gives an alleged Egyptian name which is never mentioned in the Book of the Dead or anywhere else that Egyptologists know of. He also expounds an occult religious view of an organization he claims dates back to the beginning of history and beyond, and of which he claims to be a member. He encourages the reader to "see" his other books on religion for a fuller explanation. As you might expect, Egyptologists have universally panned this alleged "true" translation, ranging from his confusion between the Pyramid Texts and the Book of the Dead, to his remarkable and undocumented claim that Atlantis was destroyed in 50,509 BC and that the pyramids were built 45,000 years ago and his contention that modern science is "evil" and that the number -place "0" is an evil concept. Naturally, Seleem claims that other Egyptolists are evil as well.So if you have been led to believe that this is a "new and true translation" of the Egyptian Book of the Dead, join many others who have been duped as well. This is a book about New Age occultism wrapped around an actual translation that is neither new nor any truer than any other. For that, look at the translation by R.O. Faulkner or any other Egyptologist who isn't pushing the legend of Atlantis and his other books on occult religions.

Brilliant look into ancient Egypt from the symbolist point of view

its a great book, i learned a lot.

This book is full of knowledge and wisdom for those who seek truth. This is truly a great translation of the book of life and shows the holistic views of the ancients. Not only does it open your eyes about the nature of reality , but also reveals the truth about religion and where modern day organized religions get their constructs from. This book is recommended for anyone in search of living in accord with the most high laws which governs us.

Beautiful! Exactly what we wanted! Thank you!

Some info but author does not explain the why of his theories.Wrote to him to ask directly and he either couldn't or wouldn't answer. He want you to buy more books, Which are very expensive and not on amazon. I am moving on..

Dr Seleem's academic credentials are not listed anywhere in this publication. This seems an obvious intended omission once you start reading in this text his ideas concerning Egyptian Cosmology, history, science and other religious traditions of the world.Exactly what is Mr. Saleem a "Doctor of"?He does not state he has a doctorate in Egyptology or Anthropology, Archeology, Linguistics, Comparative Religion or Mythology. From his absurd conculsions and naive speculations on themetaphysical and monotheistic nature of the Egyptian religon and his rantings on the evil foundations of the Western scientific method, one might conclude he never attendedan accredited University or took a single class on comparative religion or mythology.Pass this book up and be happy you did.If someone sends it to you - send it back for a refund. If you are really interested in this subject stick with Falkner and Zahi Hawass.

Its so fascinating to find out that Egypt had incorporated Breathing Techniques and Yoga into their Religion. I always thought that Asia was the only area that really perfected this but Egypt also perfected this. I have many other books on Egypt and Egyptology but this is the one I read over and over again. This translation of the Scriptures is the most beautiful I've ever read. I feel like I'm reading a Bible and building a better relationship with God when I read it.The Egyptian Book of Life goes in depth in describing the Individual Gods and it displays the correlations and correspondences with the Elements, Forces, and Principles of Nature, Life, and the Universe.I picked up this book, started reading it, and finished it in 2 days. I've re-read it twice.I bought 5 extra books and gave them out to my Family and Friends as gifts.

Robert Turner has written an incredibly substantive and thoroughly researched book about the NFL life and career from the athlete’s perspective. Turner has the inside track of being a former pro footballer with the USFL, CFL and briefly with the NFL. As importantly, Turner is a Ph.D sociologist who does serious research and reporting in this book. He develops an analysis of the cultural milieu of the NFL player – mainly emphasizing the Black NFL player. It seems like this book is an outcome of his Ph.D dissertation work, but he has made it very accessible for readers. The book paints a picture that offers myriad insights into the NFL life and the football life that precedes it in high school and college. It also focuses on post-NFL life for many players. Turner includes several profiles of players that explore the journey from high school to college and then to the NFL along with post-NFL stories. Throughout the book, Turner provides his own reflections and thoughts.I am nothing more than a fan of football and sports in general. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I found it thought provoking, and I sometimes agreed and other times didn’t. The author challenged some of my own beliefs and attitudes about people, and I think his writing definitely brought about some change in the way I look at these topics. While Turner obviously maintains great affection and affinity for football and the NFL, he often seems to write with a bias against the NFL as part of the “sports industrial complex” – that is an overarching network that uses sports for profit at the expense of the athletes who are dehumanized and often exploited to serve the vast empire. This point of view leads to a posture that seems to take a sympathetic and sometimes even pathetic view of football players as victims of this vast complex. It seems that Turner writes as if NFL players and really all black football players from high school, college and NFL are taken advantage of and practically forced into this football mill and spit out. There is a neglect of discussing their choice and freedom to play or not play. The book also doesn’t compare football to other sports or jobs. Football is not unique in being performance driven and competitive among sports or high reward careers. It is unique in the amount of physical suffering and that is definitely a price that is paid. With the NFL, the risk / reward are greater than perhaps any industry that is as well-known and sought after. And it is true that no position is safe and that little or no loyalty appears to exist by NFL teams to players. The author seems to bemoan the lack of opportunities for ex NFL players in the “sports-industrial complex” but also seems to bemoan a huge industry that has sprung up in the arena of personal coaching and intense sports training for youth. It seems like within this vast football-related industry there would be plenty of opportunities for former college or NFL players. However, I agree with the author that the NFL should do more to help former players find careers in the NFL and related industries. On one hand, the author cites the many hardships of college players and promotes the need for an NFL developmental minor leagues like baseball has; however, I imagine if that were the case then the author might find reasons to object and criticize it for luring athletes away from a free college education. The fact is that in sports like baseball many players forgo the college scholarship to chase the major league dream and fall short and are left with no payout and no college. It is a huge burden for athletes at high profile colleges, but it is also what they have worked hard to achieve, so I don’t think their dilemma warrants real sympathy, especially since it is by choice. The institution cannot be responsible for the players’ decisions or for lack of preparation or the poor life decisions they make once in college. It seems like the real essence of the sociological problem is rooted in the family and social context of the players. The football world has its pros and cons, good and evil, caregivers and manipulators just like the rest of the world. The NFL “is a form of modern day slavery,” said the player who had received over $2 million in bonus money. Unfortunately, I think, the author seems to support this statement and lets it linger unchallenged as an apparent thesis for a chapter. That chapter follows a lengthy argument about how the NFL is thoroughly merit based. Whether a free agent or a drafted star, if they don’t perform they will be replaced. The author has really asserted that teams don’t care who or what you are and will replace you for a better player at a better price. The idea that it is modern day slavery demolishes any substantive arguments. The author writes that 6% of the US population are black males, yet 70% of the NFL players are black. Is racist and slavish? A black player Vonte Davis just retired at halftime from the NFL last week…Slaves can’t do that. This is very much a serious book on the Ph.D. level. For it to be taken seriously, I think it has to take a more balanced view that looks more at both sides of the arguments. There is no doubt racist elements exists in all areas of society. The NFL is no different; however, I believe statements like the one above need to be challenged or left out of the book. Modern day slavery is Christian girls being kidnapped by Boka Haram and held as sex slaves! Or people being trafficked against their will. It is not finding that your dream is more difficult and not all that you imagined it would be while being paid a handsome salary and having the freedom to quit and walk away at anytime. To equate the NFL with slavery undermines discussion about the very real problems in the league. The author exudes a genuine care and concern for football players. The topics he addresses and has researched are those that need to be priorities for NFL and college football. Turner hits on how little the NFL accesses former players to provide mentoring and counsel to prospective and current players. Why wouldn’t each team have a “life” advisor for its players that would help them plan for life during and after football. I think the NFL would do well to invite more input and consultation from Turner regarding ways to improve the league’s care for its main “commodity,” the players. For another view of the NFL, I recommend the following recent books: "It's Not Because I'm Better than You" by NFL player Don Carey, "Push" by former college and pro player and Olympic Bobsledder Johnny Quinn, "Gridiron Genius" by Michael Lombardi and "The Mannings" by Lars Anderson.

Author Robert W Turner dose an outstanding job of taking the reader inside football and the dystopian NCAA/NFL influence that pervades it. Although he sides w/the players in everyway; other authors, like Brain Tuohy, The Fix Is In, describe Hall of Fame players as criminals, addicts, and gamblers. Both authors agree that the owners care more about profits than winning. Brain Tuohy says that championships aren't won on the basis of hard work or rising to the occasion, but perhaps because games are fixed. All this to say that I don't agree on all points of view the author expresses in his work titled Not For Long[NFL average career 3.1 years], but his work is exemplary in digging into the player's culture and their battle for fairness in the cartel's industrial strength inequality expressed in owner versus player arena. There are many facts that pepper this book bringing home the stark inequalities that pervade throughout the cartel's empire/Between 2006 and 2013, the average salary for an NCAA FBS[football series] head coach increased by 70% - a rate that outpaced the much-maligned compensation of corporate executives. This while many these coach's players scrounged for pennies tip-toeing through the numerous fascist[Big Business/Big Government]NCAA IUD explosive regulations regarding money and student athletes. By requiring that a student athlete performs well on the field and in the classroom, behaves well, and stays financially secure enough to survive w/o needing an income source, the NCAA demonstrates gross insensitivity to the needs of those athletes in socially and economically vulnerable populations. At the end of the each season, a coach can refuse to renew a player's athletic financial aid for any reason whatsoever. The point the author continually drives home by laying out the conditions under which players climb towards an NFL career is: the more an athlete is discouraged from thinking critically and challenging the status quo, the more likely they are to become dependent on the institution. This is a poignant theme that underlines the NFL/NCAA cartel's brutal signature throughout this well researched, well written, and thoughtful work.

I always enjoy reading books from people my age that do some pretty amazing things, like riding a bike across country. Neil not only does a great job of being an inspiration, but each chapter goes far beyond the technical end of the story. He talks about people he meets (which is typical of this genre) but also goes much deeper into thoughts of his own. When you ride long distances, like Neil or myself, you spend a lot of hours lost in thought. Most people never record those thoughts to discuss with others; Neil puts it all out there for the reader to also think about. Most of these books I enjoy reading but that's it. However, I would love to sit down one day in one of the obscure places that Neil talks about finding along the route to enjoy a cheeseburger and a few beers with him. Very good read!

Perhaps the greatest line in bicycling writing was penned by this author, describing the time crossing through the American southwest desert. For those of us that have "been there", Neil Hanson's writing evokes the imagination that transports us all with such clarity. You feel the moment, heatwaves that eliminate off roads on a summer day as you gaze into the distance or the solitude that one seeks in a world of constant "noise". I'm determined to meet this guy, shake his hand and say, "thanks for writing a damn good book!"

Neil Hanson is both a dedicated cyclist and a superb writer. This book, reflections accompanying the first half of his cycle journey across America, carries both sufficient cycling descriptions (touching on routes, weather, and traffic) to interest the hard-core rider, and plenty of additional reflections on such topics as life, friendship, music, and culture to pique the interest of even a reader who is not heavily invested in cycling. It begins as he shoves off from California and follows his peregrination through the southwestern United States until he reaches Kansas. Well done, Mr. Hanson! Excellent riding AND writing!

I've read more than a few of these touring books and this is easily the best of the bunch unless you're looking for packing and equipment lists. This is a well written series of observations on two wheels and life by a late middle aged man. Much much more than a laundry list of destinations.

I’ve read several of these ‘Ride Across America’ books, and this might be my least favorite. The author gleams over the actual ride itself just to focus on his ever expanding ‘state of mind’ and the crux of humanity.I’m sure he probably a nice guy, but enough already.

This was a good book that deals with the meditations and thoughts of a man in his 50s who is making a journey across the US by bicycle. This man has recently lost his wife to cancer and is tired of running a restaurant. He feels it is time for him to do something different--something that will satisfy the longings deep within himself. And do the book deals with a man examining everything he believes in the hopes of finding a new meaning to his life.

As a non-cyclist, this book gave some interesting insight and really, simply conveyed the emotions and thoughts over a long trip. It didn't get too hung up on the practical challenges (though I would have liked to hear mor about that), but rather it was a w l written story about experi nudes and thoughts. Some reviewers seem to think too much about Mr Hanson's views. I don't think that is important, whether you agree with him or not, what is nice is that he simply states the things he felt, what he enjoyed, what he thought about, and how his experience affected him. This is a story of simple reflection - it is not a deep work, just the thoughts of a man on his bike enjoying his surroundings and facing his own challenges in his own way. He keeps his narrative to the point and expresses his feelings in a direct way. It was a nice, easy read and one which allows for your own reflection on situations. Enjoyed it indeed.

Even if you are not a cyclist, you will enjoy the writing. He takes you through parts of the country you'll never see and introduces you to people you've met, you just may not realize it yet.His style of writing is refreshing and very pleasant to read. You do get to feel his wonder of discovery; but hopefully this only fuels you for your own.

The Long Way, by Bernard Moitessier William Rodarmor

Review

Moitessier is better known as one of the greatest ocean voyagers and was a legend in his time. Last month we reviewed the last book he wrote Tamata and the Alliance. This book is about his Round the World Race for singlehanded yachts. For Moitessier, the race finished in mid-Pacific after he had passed the three Capes and crossed his outward track, leading, and with the hardest sections behind him, he decided to forfeit the race and continue into the Pacific again, to anchor finally among friends in Tahiti. His actions were never explained by the news media; they could not have been, for the voyage had always been seen by Moitessier as something other than a sponsored, publicized, competitive event. It was on the ocean, alone with his boat, that Moitessier began to regard this as a voyage that could not end for him with the reward of those whose values were not his. (Sailing Inland & Offshore)One of the world's most famous ocean sailors, Moitessier had sailed for more than a year from Plymouth, England to the Indian Ocean when he inexplicably abandoned the lead in the 1968-1969 Round-the-World single-handed race. He sailed to Tahiti, dropped anchor and dropped out. Until the publication of this book, only Moitessier and a few friends knew why. Most of the book is a diary of that voyage with philosophical side trips into modern civilization. There is also a 60-page appendix that can stand alone as a small reference volume of details such as route planning, sail repair, the problems of sail and line chafe, rigging and hull construction, self-steering, freak waves and weather, plus much more. Altogether a strange, fascinating, and informative book. (Boat U.S.)

#74,313 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I have read a number of nautical tales written by or about sailors who went around the world either in races or just for the challenge or interests of it, beginning with they were you the original one by Captain Joshua Slocum – sailing around the world alone. The thing that sets Moitessier apart is that he was a sailor first with an almost mystic connection with the ocean and his craft whereas others, I exclude Slocum, were adventurers first and true sailors second. In his account he never seemed to have been pressured to hurry, rather he maintained a rational and relaxed Pace with an emphasis on not making mistakes. Hence he finished well above else and in joy himself so much apparently they decided not to pick up the prize which he had won, handily, electing instead to stay on the ocean for another 10 or 12,000 miles. For anyone interested in sailing, there is a long section at the back of the book of advice and explanations of sailing lower, about equipment and every other important aspect that a knowledgeable sailor should understand.

Excellent insight into the mind of a pioneering sailor. Includes lots of technical details but also views into his state of mind and the near insanity that many solo circumnavigators flirt with. Also good insights into blue water cruising of 50 years ago. Appendix is a dry listing of methods of sailing, of which maybe 30% are irrelevant today so you can decide whether to skip that or not.

It's occasionally difficult to remember that Moitessier's memoir of the first Golden Globe singlehanded sail circumnavigation back in 1968 even concerns a race. From the outset, Moitessier enraptures himself and enraptures the reader in a tale of man alone finding his own inner compass. Virtually all prose-poem, THE LONG WAY skitters off the edge of the mundane into a realm of sometimes numinous interior dialogue, but it holds the reader's attention throughout.Moitessier entered the Round The World Race presumably to win, but he spends far more time communing with the seabirds and listening to the wave patterns on his boat, JOSHUA's hull than in dedicated yacht racing. In the end, Moitessier decided not to sail back to his starting point, but went on to Tahiti on the next step of his inner voyage.THE LONG WAY is particularly interesting to read in juxtaposition with THE STRANGE LAST VOYAGE OF DONALD CROWHURST (Crowhurst went mad and simply stepped off his boat into the sea), and Robin Knox-Johnston's A WORLD OF MY OWN. Johnston prosaically suffered the miseries of a diet of canned bully beef, and a constant nervous but impeccably British Imperial xenophobic dread of how "The Frog" was doing. He wanted to be the winner, and was. It's clear that Moitessier could have cared less what Knox-Johnston or the others were doing. JOSHUA is his private garden, and he invites us in to sample its mysteries. His Zen-like approach is more understandable when one realizes that he was French in parentage but raised in Indochina. A calm, accepting Buddhist tone glows throughout this book. If indeed Moitessier went mad (as some say he did) his madness was a doorway to spiritual peace, and not, like Crowhurst's, to sorrow and death.Moitessier takes us THE LONG WAY toward beauty, value, and the validation of ourselves in what is, after all, a vast and playful universe.

Bernard the mystic! I enjoyed this! you get a cursorial look at his sailing log...and a whole lot of his thought streaming. The little turd throws a heap of non biodegradable 'stuff' into the sea he loves so much..which I found hypocritical after his bemoaning of nature and the environment's decline at our hands - weird! But I love that he thrives alone...there is something in that for all those who struggle with solitariness...oh yeah..and he writes well enough to keep it flowing.

As a sailor I really enjoyed the book. I won't speculate on how a non-sailor might take to it. It is a fun way to learn more about how this kind of adventure was approached during this period. Many things have changed, especially with respect to the environment. While he clearly has nothing but respect for his environment some of his actions are typical of the time and can't be judged by our views today. It is far more than a simple log of his journey. His accomplishments are made even more amazing by his apparent lack of concern for them being just that.

When I got it in the mail my feeling was: "Finally the epic book by B. Moitessier!" After reading it I can only say that it is a disappointment, not by the story itself, but rather by the narrative style of the late Mr. Moitessier which, to my taste, was immensely boring. Each and every event narrated is enveloped in poetic digressions about his youth or some other reminescence, in what turns out as a crude attempt at erudition. Add to that the fact that I'm not a francophile and the outcome couldn't be different. However, I can see this book appealing to many readers, who are more willing to read about a man's "personal journey", rather than a "round-the-world sailing book".

This looks like it would be a good book if you are starting from scratch. It slowly builds your skills, with each chapter jumping from PHP to JavaScript to mySQL as the topics best fit. It also includes very basic things for true beginners, like database design, table relationships, normalization, CSS Box model, etc.I purchased this more as a reference book. I wanted to be able to quickly look up the syntax for things like mysqi prepared statements. I would have liked to see some appendices, or cheat sheets with syntax. I couldn't even find anything about prepared statements in the book. And that's something I expected to find at least in the index. When I wanted to find out how to write a case statement, I checked the index for the word Case and the only thing found is Case-sensitivity. I also expected to find links to string modification syntax under Case, like strtouppercase. I know, you can always Google that stuff. But I have a repetitive stress injury-the point of getting a book was to try to be able to spend less time on the computer and more time on paper. So for my special needs it isn't a great fit. Also the index is an alphabetical composite of the entire book. So if you look up a syntax keyword or topic, the page is it list maybe JavaScript or PHP or SQL, and you can't tell until you open it to each page and book.I was looking for a reference book that was one section PHP, one section mySQL, and one section JavaScript. Or at least easy to find what I was looking for quickly. This is not that book. Really good stuff for a beginner or a class -I'd say 5***** stars for that purpose. And I can't say if it's better or worse than than any other book because it's the only one I have. It just doesn't work too well for me.

As stated in the introduction, the book "takes the most useful parts" of other texts on these subjects and supposedly "refreshes the content".I haven't read those other books, but can see in places where it's obvious, and not in a good way. There are references to some term or technique that was apparently in another book, but didn't make it into this one. Then, there are the practically oblgatory run-of-the-mill errors. The proofreading of programming books in general is simply abominable.Just one example: In chapter 15, page 392 : "in the text box defined previously ... the variable is user_name". I don't think so. On the previous page, there in an input element. The only things that could be relevant are 'id="the_name"' and 'name= "the_name"' So, not only is "user_name" wrong, the author fails to inform us whether it should have come from "id" or "name".If you're not an expert in any or all of these topics, you will certainly learn something, but I recommend finding other, more focused books on HTML5/CSS, JavaScript, PHP, and MySQL.

It's a perfect choice for both college students and self-learners. Easy to follow guide at the foundation level of programming the web and what it is all about..
