I absolutely loved this book which focuses on an Indian American family who have come to the United States and are now making their home in California. The story opens at Hadia's wedding where her brother Amar has come to reconcile with the family after having left home several years earlier. From that point, the book moves back and forth in time as bits and pieces of this family's story is revealed. We see Layla and Raffiq as a young couple, just starting out. We see the childhoods of Hadia and her younger sister Huda, and her younger brother, Amar. Different key events in their lives are shared, giving some background for the current state of their relationship now.This is a family saga that absolutely captured my attention from the very first page. I found each of the characters interesting and enjoyed how Mirza moved the story in time and perspective. I loved that although this is an immigrant story that is well done, it is also the story of more than just a family trying to assimilate in a new country and culture. Mirza's characters each have their own stories and flaws that are developed. I felt like this picture of a family is well done, that Mirza shows the good, the bad, the beautiful, the ugly. The resolution of the story is also well done, although not tied up with a pretty bow, either.A Place For Us will very likely be one of the best books I read in 2018. I can't wait to see what else this author creates.

Sorry, but I do not know what all the rave reviews are about. I found this book to be almost impossible to finish, but finish it I did. Waaaay too much religious stuff for my taste. I did plod thru this tho, because of all the rave reviews, and I figured I would find what everybody was raving about. Sadly, but I did not. I could not pinpoint any specific story line. It seemed to be about an emotionally abusive father now facing his mortality, and regretting the way he treated his son. Nevermind that he also didn't treat his two daughters much better, but the SON, oh yes, the SON. Typical religious thinking, the SON is the most important, the SON is the only one, the SON, the SON, the SON; thank the MALE gods that I have a SON. Yes I mistreated my children, but I mostly regret mistreating my SON. If you're religious and think the men are appointed by whatever 'god' is, then this is a good book for you. Me, forget it.

One of the best books Ever! I can't wait to see what this author writes next. This was one of the most beautiful books I have ever read. It does not matter your religion. I am Catholic and I can say that I truly loved this book and reading about the Muslim faith. Ms Mirza has a beautiful way of writing . I would almost like to see a follow up book to see what is going on with Amar and the rest of the family. I really felt for the father. I would like to see him make things right with his son. As we all age everything comes into a more clear perspective and we realize that we need to give a little more, lighten up and enjoy life more. I will appreciate looking up at the night sky and my surroundings more now after reading this book. For a young woman in her twenties to write such a wonderful book while going to college is amazing to me. All I did in college was drink and study in that order. Bravo!!!

I hesitate to pen this review because from where I sit, no words of mine could possibly do justice to this breathtakingly beautiful story...but I think to not contribute to the reviews that could encourage other readers to pick this up would be an even greater injustice to the author, who deserves every single word of praise and much more. While this is definitely a beautiful story, it is so unbelievably tragic that I think I'll be revisiting it for many days, and I will most definitely be reading it again...This book both broke my heart and made me smile throughout. Each character is so masterfully and intricately written that you feel as if you truly know them. You feel the love as it blooms in their hearts, their sadness and devastation as each strand of cord that ties them together is broken, their anxiety and inner conflict when they are keeping a secret, their regret and feelings of guilt that motivate them to do both everything and nothing to fix themselves and one another. Even Huda, who seems to be more of a minor character comes through with strength as the decades pass. I love the way that Fatima Farheen Mirza continues to give entirely different perspectives on the same events from each of the characters in the book. Hadia's great love for her entire family that is sometimes challenged for her desire for individual freedoms and equality. Layla's blind love for her son is counterbalanced for the jealousy she guiltily feels over her daughter's preference for Rafiq when they are young. Amar's desire for approval is diminished by what he feels is constant rejection from his community. What was most interesting to me was to recognize that Amar and Rafiq were mirror images of one another. Both wanted nothing more than love and acceptance from one another, but both were too prideful and afraid of rejection to allow themselves to actually pursue it. The saddest part about this story are the feelings they keep hidden in the dark recesses of their hearts and souls until it is too late. So many times throughout the book I found myself saying, JUST SAY IT! TELL THEM! But how like us all it is to keep these most important things tucked away, only to allow our anger and knee-jerk reactions dominate our relationships?Rafiq's narrative is the most heart-wrenching to read as a parent. I related so much to both Hadia and Amar because everyone has been the rebellious teenager who wishes they could just be accepted as they are. But as a parent, and understanding Rafiq's regret at the ripple effect his words and actions had not just in his own life, but in the life of his children left me speechless. How often do I say things to my children that hurt them because I think it is the right thing to say, when really I want to give them the love they are yearning for? The final piece of the story, in which Rafiq finally sets aside his pride and delivers a message to Amar via Abbas, is where I finally teared up and where we finally see Rafiq come full circle to his own desires to know his father as a boy.Beautiful story, beautiful prose and beautiful tragedy. This book is one that will live on for many, many years!

Well Ms. Monroe certainly answered our questions about Grace! The guys are as hardcore alpha as usual, but this book could have be called" Don't Mess With Grace" The book is a little shorter than previous books but it's packed with lots of action. It's fast paced and keeps you guessing. There has been lots of speculation on from whom and where the threat will come but as always the villian comes out of left field. I do wish it was longer, I read it in less than 3 hours. Tommy is a beast and if you have questions if Grace is ride or die, well all I can say is move over Roz Sinatra. I would love a book with the Gabrini/Sinatra women. These sistahs don't play. Of course, we see Sal, Reno, and Mick. Tommy and Grace are solid (yea) and we get to see their solid bond in this book. Very few grammatical errors. Yes, it's short but it packs a punch. The selection of the title "Every Which Way But Loose" is spot on. Many readers thought Grace had matured in the previous book, she really comes into her own in this one. Ms. Monroe shows how Grace is now a grown a-woman and she "don't play!" But, we still see some of the old Grace, the sweet loving mom Grace. It's a great read. Enjoy!

I'd been waiting for the newest Tommy/Grace book and this one didn't disappoint. After their reunion in Tommy's last book - a reunion that sparked some serious online debates with fans since some liked Liz more than Grace as well as some liking Grace more than Liz - I wanted to see how they were holding up as a couple now that Tommy & Grace had a better read on each other after learning from their past mistakes. If you're a fan of this series then you know how that story will go, but it's still enjoyable nonetheless. And I very much enjoyed reading Tommy & Grace's reestablished relationship.I do have one nitpick but it's regarding the author's books OVERALL regarding sex/intimacy scenes. They're basically interchangeable among all the couples ... Tommy/Grace, Mick/Roz, Sal/Gemma, Reno/Trina, Big Daddy/Jenay ... and it's disappointing as these couples all work for different reasons, yet all their intimate scenes read as a generic copy/paste of each other. And I'm not the only one whose has noticed that the intimate moments come off as unoriginal copies of each other where it could be any of the couples listed above cause they lack distinction. I hope the writer either has fewer sex scenes or works to give these moments of intimacy distinct differences.Also, I'm itching for a book with Mick's son, Teddy.

Good read, I love to see all the guys coming to each others rescue. I hope the author continues to pull Mick in because he turned out to be a big part of the action whenever he is on the scene. Tommy and Grace still seem boring though overall. Grace’s character is so boring and Tommy’s character being so quiet doesn’t help with anything that goes on with them.Even the ending was boring, she should’ve done something other than that to really show her anger or disgust for what he was planning to do to her kids. Good but again I’d rather read about Mick and Sal then Reno before Tommy.

Oh the complexities of your past. This book was great, it shows how much Tommy & Grace have grown as a couple. How tight the Gabrini family is as a force to be reckoned with. It demonstrates how when your enemies are out to get you, they better really know who they are messing with. Exciting series of events. I also like how we are seeing the personalities of the younger Gabrinis.

I like the new Grace! Sounds like she has chosen to change in order to have that Tommy love. That love is HOT & deep. I love all of the Gabrini men. They are different yet alike. Mallory did it again. I love the way she writes about the Gabrini men. And Grace has really grown into her own womanhood fighting for her family and children. I always love the banter between the men. It's such a comic relief when the plot thickens. It's no doubt that the Gabrini and Sinatra men are my favorite alphas along with their creator who brings them to life. I would love to see a TV series based on them!

Stayed up all night reading and reading this book. I thought I had missed something when there was no resolution to the GCI incident. Hopefully it will be in the next Tommy or Sal book. I love Tommy in this book because he developed into protecting Grace from his past women. I guess I expected him to be more like Sal in the respect. Loved this book and looking for to the next generation of Gabrinis. Can't wait.

As usual, this is one of the best series in it's genre. it doesn't matter if it's tommy, Sal, Reno, Mick or Big-Daddy Sinatra, you can count on a wild ride. This book is about Tommy, and he has come a long way from the hard loving playboy businessman.Instead, he has become a family man, still sexy as hell, but so loving that a few times, I had to prepare for the steamy sex scenes.Most importantly, this book should've been titles "Saving Grace", in more ways than one, she was the star of this book. She proved she is ride or die, for her man and her children. She has established herself as a Gabrini, and not to forget that.Once again, Ms. Malloy did her thing and I can't wait for the next installment.

My father is a carpenter and makes replica barns the size of small doll houses and he was looking for something that could make his work a little more realistic. He found all that he needed in this book. A wealth of information with beautiful pictures to accompany the facts. And the price was right. Very inexpensive for a book of this caliber. I'm never really had any interest in barns but I skimmed through the book before giving it to Dad and I enjoyed the learning experience. Very interesting. Would be appreciated by those interested in history and woodwork.

But it's not very deep (I would have liked more on non Newtonian liquids for example) and he goes off on tangents, notably on global warming and plate tectonics. Maybe there's not that much to say about liquids ? His gambit of using a London to San Francisco flight for his agenda is way overdone.He closes with a final irony (not noticed); he and his neighbor on the plane were both going to the same sustainable development conference in San Francisco. For two people (among many others) to fly 12 hours each way on an airplane for a one or two day conference doesn't seem very sustainable to me.

This is a delightfully quirky science book. No matter what your background you will learn something new, and the way he transitions is marvellous! He starts at A tranzits thorugh Q and ends up at B, C and D, in easy to read three page segments. The whole oddessy set up as ruminations during a single long flight, and with funny intereactions with his seat mate. It was my favorite Chistmas present for others. READ IT!

The author is very knowledgeable and passionate about his subject. However, the conceit of a plane journey to tie chapters together felt trite and forced. It's possible that some of the science was distorted and/or some facts of interest left out in order to fit the science into the journey.

I purchased this book after it was recommended by a librarian. This is an absolutely amazing book! It's fun to read and even more fun when read with movements and noises added. I love they was able to keep both my 18-month-old and seven-year-old engaged while reading. I didn't even think that was possible! This book would be an excellent addition to any home library and a fantastic book to gift to a teacher. We love this book.

This little story is of a little old lady who walks down the road and starts to get followed by a pair of shoes, then a pair of pants..etc...until an entire outfit of clothing is following her and culminates with a giant jack o lantern that in the end does scare her a bit, but she uses her smarts and figures out a way for the head and outfit to be happy scaring, while being useful. Cute story, but will get old fast.

This is a great book. Great for ages 2 all the way up. It’s always hard buying a book without holding it and reading it for yourself but this is a great book!! They also interact with the book while you read. I have kids 3,5,6, and 8. They loved reading it

I am an early childhood educator so I have read numerous children's books over the years. My three year old grandson absolutely loves this book. He enjoys joining in with reading the repetitive phrases. What a wonderful, interactive book for the fall season. I consider this a five star book for sure!

I was read this book throughout my childhood around Halloween and when my kid's second Halloween rolled around I decided we needed a copy for our home. Just as cute as I remember it, but two years old may be a little young for this book. She still listens to me read it, but I still think it's a bit wordy and advanced for her age. She informs the shoes that they don't scare her and continues on, with the shoes following behind. When she meets up with pants, a shirt, gloves and a hat, and, finally, with a pumpkin head, she repeats herself, but she does walk a bit faster after each meeting. Closing the door at home behind her doesn't end things, as the set of clothes comes knocking. The clothing, particularly the pumpkin head, are very sad that they're unable to frighten the lady, but she has a wonderful idea that gets everyone's approval.This isn't, exactly, a Halloween book. The carved pumpkin head gives it that appearance, and the fact that it's a scary, tense, story, adds to that impression, but more than Halloween, this is an AUTUMN book. It is perfect for those days when the sun sets early and there's a little hint of coming frost in the air - as long as your young reader isn't easily scared! While the idea of being followed around by clothes is mildly amusing to me, as an adult, it'll be your call for your kid, whether or not he/she is likely to enjoy a little scare. The ending, good for a laugh, takes the sting out of the scary lead-up, if knowing that helps you decide.The text is very good. The following that the little old lady accumulates grows and becomes more ominous and the text conveys that very well, building the tension as the reader roots for the little old lady to escape the menacing laundry pile behind her. The illustrations, set in boxes on each page, are smaller - sometimes much smaller - than they needed to be, or even should have been. This is a perfect book for full page and two-page spreads overflowing with detail. For that type of imagery, see Halloween Night instead. The illustrations are my only complaint, however. This is a really good, slightly scary story for young and beginning readers who will probably prefer having a comforting adult do the reading - it is four solid stars good, it's just not five wow stars great.- AnnaLovesBooks

This was a great book that invited partication from kids. I volunteered to be a mystery reader at my granddaughters second grade class the week before Halloween. Sounded great when I volunteered, but then I started to get really nervous. By trade I teach college students— what did I know about second graders? So I called my sister who taught second graders for nearly 40 years. This was the book she recommended, and it was perfect. All the kids participated and we had great laughs and a good time. Recommend this book, particularly around Halloween.

My daughter loves Halloween and naturally she loves this book. Her preschool teacher recommended it to us as it was the book of the month. I like the little old lady’s confidence. It’s great to teach that to our young girls whenever we can.

The actual translations of the Egyptian Book of the Dead, aka Egyptian Book of Coming Forth By Day, are the usual translations that have been read many times before. Nothing new in this so-called "translation," although the tables of Egyptian hieroglyphs used in the Book of the Dead are useful for reference.But Seleem's main purpose is to convince the reader that the founders of Egypt came from Atlantis, to which he gives an alleged Egyptian name which is never mentioned in the Book of the Dead or anywhere else that Egyptologists know of. He also expounds an occult religious view of an organization he claims dates back to the beginning of history and beyond, and of which he claims to be a member. He encourages the reader to "see" his other books on religion for a fuller explanation.As you might expect, Egyptologists have universally panned this alleged "true" translation, ranging from his confusion between the Pyramid Texts and the Book of the Dead, to his remarkable and undocumented claim that Atlantis was destroyed in 50,509 BC and that the pyramids were built 45,000 years ago and his contention that modern science is "evil" and that the number -place "0" is an evil concept. Naturally, Seleem claims that other Egyptolists are evil as well.So if you have been led to believe that this is a "new and true translation" of the Egyptian Book of the Dead, join many others who have been duped as well. This is a book about New Age occultism wrapped around an actual translation that is neither new nor any truer than any other. For that, look at the translation by R.O. Dr Seleem's academic credentials are not listed anywhere in this publication.This seems an obvious intended omission once you start reading in this text his ideas concerning Egyptian Cosmology, history, science and other religious traditions of the world.Exactly what is Mr. Saleem a "Doctor of"?He does not state he has a doctorate in Egyptology or Anthropology, Archeology, Linguistics, Comparative Religion or Mythology.From his absurd conculsions and naive speculations on themetaphysical and monotheistic nature of the Egyptian religon and his rantings on the evil foundations of the Western scientific method, one might conclude he never attendedan accredited University or took a single class on comparative religion or mythology.Pass this book up and be happy you did.If someone sends it to you - send it back for a refund.If you are really interested in this subject stick with Falkner and Zahi Hawass.

Its so fascinating to find out that Egypt had incorporated Breathing Techniques and Yoga into their Religion. I always thought that Asia was the only area that really perfected this but Egypt also perfected this. I have many other books on Egypt and Egyptology but this is the one I read over and over again.This translation of the Scriptures is the most beautiful I've ever read. I feel like I'm reading a Bible and building a better relationship with God when I read it.The Egyptian Book of Life goes in depth in describing the Individual Gods and it displays the correlations and correspondences with the Elements, Forces, and Principles of Nature, Life, and the Universe.I picked up this book, started reading it, and finished it in 2 days. I've re-read it twice.I bought 5 extra books and gave them out to my Family and Friends as gifts.
