From there the book deals largely with the question of how language works and how it can describe the world accurately. Many forms of language (e.g. names and propositions) reflect different objective parts of reality (e.g. objects and facts). Logic is then discussed as it pertains to tautologies, contradictions and propositions. From this claim stems the conclusion that that the laws of science are not logical “laws,” but a means that we use to express reality—hence, science does not in fact explain our world but merely describes it.Although the author embraces logic, he ironically ventures into the mystical on many occasions. Some of such highlights of Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus include the proposal that most philosophical propositions are senseless (4.003), the relativity of “free” will and the lack of inner necessity of causality (5.1362), and the inability to recognize either the truth or falsehood from non-logical propositions. Wittgenstein brilliantly elaborates on widely accepted, yet wholly non-certain, everyday happenings (6.363II to 6.372) and clarifies that all ethics is transcendental (6.42I). In effect, the author posits that morality is in fact objective because subjective morality stems from happenstance, and is therefore meaningless.All potential readers should be acutely aware that this book is a very, very tough read. Either way, Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus is a terse, powerful, enigmatic and notable in its ability to whisk the dormant imagination into shape. Amazing read, and recommendable. Wittgenstein tried to spell out precisely what a logically constructed language can (and cannot) be used to say. Its seven basic propositions simply state that language, thought, and reality share a common structure, fully expressible in logical terms.On Wittgenstein's view, the world consists entirely of facts. (Tractatus 1.1) Human beings are aware of the facts by virtue of our mental representations or thoughts, which are most fruitfully understood as picturing the way things are. (Tractatus 2.1) These thoughts are, in turn, expressed in propostitions, whose form indicates the position of these facts within the nature of reality as a whole and whose content presents the truth-conditions under which they correspond to that reality. (Tractatus 4) Everything that is true—that is, all the facts that constitute the world—can in principle be expressed by atomic sentences. Imagine a comprehensive list of all the true sentences. They would picture all of the facts there are, and this would be an adequate representation of the world as a whole. Tractatus, however, not only provides a way to structure our knowledge about the world, but also provokes to develop a critical contradiction with a non-factual or emotioanl sphere of human nature.

I consider this book to be very worth reading because it is associated with an extremely important period in philosophy following the work of Frege, Russell and Whitehead. I found it to be very opaque. Wittgenstein seemed to be struggling with ideas he encountered while considering the work of Frege, Russell and Whitehead. The preface by Russell showed that he considered the work to be very significant. I intend to study more about this, and will probably revise this review later. For now, I would recommend reading the Tractatus, but I did not understand it very well.I think that a primary aim of Wittgenstein in the Tractatus was to address Russell's paradox and other problems of the "language" of logic, as being developed by Frege, Russell and Whitehead at that time. This led him into deep waters with respect to the mysteries of language, and a seeming necessity to set limits, even if these limits were somewhat arbitrary. Certainly some of his insights in this regard were highly penetrating. In particular, he viewed transgressing limits where truth could be adequately assessed as entering a realm of nonsense. I feel that had Gödel's work been available at the time, Wittgenstein might have thought somewhat differently about the limits he perceived. On the other hand, Wittgenstein ignored this work later in the more mature phases of his thinking. I came away from the Tractatus feeling that while it is still of great importance, especially as it was at a historical nexus in the evolution of logic, and displays some profound insights, time has somewhat passed it by.

This appears to be the product of a poor scan and OCR. There are multiple typos per page. Why does this matter more than usual? It's Wittgentein, and he was all about how ideas can and cannot be expressed in language. By introducing errors like this, it renders it almost unreadable.

One of the most influential books of the first half of the twentieth century and alongside Philosophical Investigations sets the standard for analytical philosophy's immense influence on modern theory. Wittgenstein basically demolishes metaphysical pretensions that derive from the reification of language.

I read this book 50 years ago when I was in grammar school and it made a lasting impression on me. I always said I would someday re-read it. I finally have done that. I downloaded a Kindle copy, re-read it and I love it as much as I did 50 years ago! The characters really come to life and you feel their pain and pleasure as they live through the sufferings of the Civil War. Its obvious why the characters and their situations are so real: they were based on real life people, family letters and stories told by the author's grandfather, who was nine years old at the beginning of the war and was an eyewitness to this fascinating period of history. I've read Irene Hunt's other books and I like them all, but this one will always be my favorite. Its written for a young audience but people of all ages will enjoy it. I can see why it won the Newberry Award. If you read only one book this year, let it be this one!

I've heard this book recommended by many homeschoolers over the years as a must read during Civil War era history studies, and had purchased it for future use. Unfortunately when it was assigned the book was packed in boxes from our move so I bought the eBook version for the assignment! This fall I read this book aloud to my 7th grader as it was a parent-child discussion assignment.Set in southern Illinois, the story unfolds over five years, starting just before the Civil War and ending soon after the war ends. Jethro is the main character, a nine year old farmboy who is the baby in the family. Soon all his older brothers go off to war leaving his sister, he, and his parents to tend to the family farm which is a lot of work. Jethro's father falls ill and all the farmwork then falls to Jethro. Forced to grow up before his time given both the family's individual situation and the unrest in the country, this winds up being a coming of age tale. At the start of the story Jethro was a little boy and by the end he is a fourteen year old young man.Issues with the Civil War are debated and discussed in the story by the characters. An early situation is one of Jethro's brothers sympathizes with the Southerners and leaves the family to fight with the Rebels. This causes discontent, anger and hatred in the community, since they live in The North. Later the Creighton family is the target of hate crimes punishing them for the crime of the traitor son.Throughout the book we are informed of the happenings in the Civil War as the family hears news of various battles. Sometimes we read letters written by family members at the battlefront and other times we hear the opinions expressed in the newspapers. The opinions of the public about the Generals and President Lincoln are also shared as part of the story. I felt this showed that the issues were complicated and that even a family raised with the same values could not agree on which opinion was the right one. Later we wrestle with the issue of what should happen to soldiers who ran away from the battlefield and also what should happen to the traitors when the war was over.A subplot is the romantic love that develops between the fourteen year old girl and the schoolteacher who winds up fighting in the war. Her father had banned their marriage before he left to fight saying she was too young to marry. The girl matured in the war years and in the end we hope to see them united in marriage and hope he makes it through the war alive. (I'll not spoil the story...)I confess I am not a war story lover so in the parts that detailed the details of the battles my interest waned. However I was rivoted to the book and wanted to find out what happened to the Creighton family in the end. I would guess that any reader who likes battle details will be most interested in the book but honestly the story is solid and moves along quickly so even if you just want to know what happens to the individual people in the family and in the community you will enjoy the book.Character traits and virtues are clearly present in this historical fiction story. There is a lot to talk about regarding ethics and values as well as the topic of the Civil War. The book gave me a sense for what life was like for those who were both fighing in the war and those who were left at home struggling to make ends meet with most of the men in the family gone off to war.This is a solid, high quality historical fiction book that I think every middle school aged student should read, hopefully in conjunction with a study of The Civil War. I bet they'd learn a lot more by reading this than by reading a boring old textbook.

When his father suffers a heart attack, the task of running the family farm falls on young Jethro’s shoulders. The story spans the entire Civil War, five Aprils from 1861 to 1865.Across Five Aprils by Irene Hunt is a bittersweet book that reminds you that war is never tied up with a tidy bow. People die or are injured or can’t come home for various reasons. The story is told very well with the focus on how the war affected those left at home. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves historical fiction or the Civil War.

Of neighbors who look out for one another and reveals the bigotry of those who hurt others for the lack of virtue in themselves.Young Jethro is an amazing young man who is forced to grow up and become the bread winner but throughout his trail he becomes a thoughtful caring human.The history of the battles is cleverly written into the fabric of the life's impacted.Great reading and ranks along side "Where the Red Fern Grows" and "Red Badge of Courage"

Across Five Aprils is one of the best Civil War books written for readers of any age. I have read it and listened to it many times. This recorded version is very good, but it is not great. As a listener, I have never been moved by the story as I was as a reader. Even so, I have gone back to the recorded version several times. This book introduces you to both people and history that you cannot bear to let go of.

I H-A-D to read this book in Jr. High, I think. Regardless of when, it made a lasting impression on me. I appreciate the style and substance so much more now than my 13 year old self did. The specifics I remembered are nits in the overall scope of the tale. I'm glad I re-read this wonderful book.

I read this book and took the test and passed.The books is structured really well and covers everything you need to know. There are no grammatical errors and the authors write extremely well. In general I think they do a good job of explaining the material. There are, however, a few places where there are some mistakes. They need to get an errata going and fix those asap.Here was my biggest complaint: The sample questions and mock test that they provide you on the CD is in no way shape or form representative of the level of difficulty of the questions on the real test. I finished test one from the CD in about 45 minutes to an hour and scored about 90%. On the real test I needed every moment of the 2 1/2 hours and got a much lower score. Of course I still passed.Perhaps the kaplan tests are more realistic.

The book is nice and very useful if you need some preparation for OCA test, but some of the examples are not working. It seems like some of the examples has been done for Java 7 instead of Java 8.

As good as new.

The exam mock is well organized and the explanations to the topics are very clear.

I tried so hard to like the book, I just couldn't get into it. I think so much of the text was unnecessary. Too many repetitions that you tend to lose the main point.I couldn't even get through a few pages of it without falling asleep. The Sybex one seems more well written. I'm still waiting to read other people's comments and reviews.

If you don't know much about how dogs can become stressed and if you don't know much about canine body language, this book is useful. It has clear information on both of these topics, including photos.But if you're already conversant on such matters, working your dog, and looking for a guide on how to manage/train your dog (or client dogs), keep looking. Other than a couple case studies (that don't provide a lot of in-depth information), this book doesn't provide much "how to" information.

Not as comprehensive as I would have liked but still a useful book.

I was disappointed in this book. It has two flaws--either the original writing was awkward, or the translation is bad--it's hard to tell which. Second, and more importantly, it doesn't have a great deal of practical utility. There are many signs of stress listed, that include almost every dog behavior under the sun, and many causes, which are, again, multiple. The most interesting fact I picked up from it was that dogs need an average of 17 hours a day of sleep not to be stressed! If the reader needs a really useful reference on how to recognize stress in dogs, Canine Body Language by Aloff is much, much more useful, or the original pamphlet Turid Rugaas.

We recently fostered a dog and it really helped with our understanding and patience when we could read the dog's behavior better.

Some useful concepts but I had hoped it would be more detailed and be of more practical use

This book clearly discusses the types of stresses dogs have and helps humans understand and deal with those stresses. A great read for the serious dog person.

A little over the top... I didn't get very far because she makes it sound like virtually any normal dog behavior can be a sign of stress... Which leads you to wonder what the point in watching their behavior might be? I'm probably not being fair because I didn't read the whole book. But perhaps the first chapter needs reworking to grab the reader's attention with the meat of the message?

If you want to impress your friends big time with your artistic talent all you will need is a pencil sharpener, colored pencils, paper, a pencil and an eraser. Of course there are a few personal qualities like enthusiasm, patience and the ability to follow directions carefully that are always a big help when you want to draw something. In this book you will learn how to draw a convertible, a MONSTER truck, a Ferrari, a dirt bike, a semitruck, a Jeep, a motorcycle and an Indy car. You don't have to have aspirations of becoming an illustrator or cartoonist to have a passion for drawing, but after reading this book . . . VROOOOM! You'll be drawing like crazy and might just think about it!In the first couple of pages you will learn, in three simple steps, how to utilize some very basic geometric shapes to begin creating your vehicle. You'll also be given some helpful hints to think about before you even start. This is where your ability to follow directions will come in very handy. Once you begin you will find step-by-step instructions for each vehicle you want to draw. Each vehicle has a short, interesting vignette about it. For example: "What can jump distances of 115 feet (35 meters) and crush as many as twenty-five cars? Monster trucks!" The paragraph goes on to mention several different types that are "ready to rumble and race." Once you complete your drawing the last step is to color it.This is one of those "WOW" books that will thrill any youngster who happens to get a copy. The directions are very clear, concise and the visuals accompanying the directions are easy to follow. My first attempt at drawing a convertible didn't look exactly like the picture, but was a very gratifying experience because it really looked wonderful. I did use a template for the wheels as my confidence level for making the perfect circle was not high. Some of the drawings are more difficult than others, but all are doable with practice and patience. If you want to be a big hit with a youngster, simply purchase the needed materials along with the book and give it as a gift. This book is definitely a first place winner! VROOOM! VROOOM!

Lots of Knock-knock Jokes for Kids is a paperback book written by Whee Winn. This book includes more than 250 short and simple jokes for kids of all ages (which of course includes dads and grandpas) to tell one another.The jokes in this book are easy to remember, which is great for kids like my 5 year old son who seem to forget what they're talking about 2/3 of the way through whatever it is that they are saying. These jokes are also clean and do not use any gross or graphic humor. This would be a fun book for a rainy or snowy day or to include in a child's Christmas stocking or Easter basket. It would also be fun as part of a birthday gift that might also include some funny stuff like a whoopee cushion or a Minions Fart Blaster toy (ask me how I know about these things).Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for writing an honest review. I bought this book for a 5 year old who is a little joker. The book is 121 pages long, with soft pages and smaller dimensions - great for little hands. I've reviewed most of it in pretty good detail. The funniest part of the book isn't even the knock knock jokes - it's Section 8's bonus riddles. Those I found to be hilarious, and they span about 20 pages. The rest of the book, the knock knock piece, is 'okay'. There is too much repetition of the punchline "open the door" and "let me in". They are used so much that the joke gets old fast. The Name Knock Knock jokes alone go on for 36 pages and is the largest category in the book. I really think it should be pared down to something more in line with the ~10 pages allocated to the other categories of knock knock jokes. Other categories include Place Jokes, Holiday Jokes, Food Jokes, Animal Jokes, Object Jokes and a category for "Other".

It is perfectly leveled for his age (5) and he LOVES memorizing each one and telling everyone he meets each joke. I am so happy I bought this because they are jokes that he can understand as young as he is.

I bought this book as a gift exchange gift for school. The jokes are nice and corny, exactly what kids love. We had to stay under $5 so it was a perfect price point. It does the job, the cover is nice and colorful, the pages were basic black and white. perfect for young kids who bend pages. Exactly what we were looking for and didn't have to leave the house to get it.

It seemed like a good idea at the time, but 20 knock-knock jokes in to the 2500 repertoire has me rethinking the purchase! Oh well, my six year old daughter loves it and is sharing with her younger brother, so now they're both in on the act. It is also improving her reading, as she readily picks it up multiple times a day, so all in all I suppose it's worth the repetition. And I must admit, some of the jokes are pretty funny!

Granddaughter loves to make up jokes that weren't really funny, though she thought they were funny... so her mommy asked for joke books little N, birthday. Short enough for first or second grader to memorize.Some jokes had to be explained to her, so adults should be aware of this.Nice little book, easy for her to read.

My little daughter loves knock knock jokes so this was a perfect book for her. The jokes are simple, easy to read and I love that the jokes are broken down by chapter/subject. The only down fall is that it was shipped in a soft envelope and delivered to my small mailbox. When I opened the package the spine was bent which was disappointing but not worth the hassle of returning for a new one.

I bought this "Knock-Knock Jokes for Kids" for my seven-year old grandson. He loves it. He reads the jokes to anyone who is willing to listen. He also remembers a lot of the Knock-Knock Jokes, and has built up a repertoire of Knock-Knock Jokes, a must for a seven-year old.I highly recommend this book.

Where I really learn from Dream Theater is when I read this score while the CD is playing. Because, after all, this book really is a very thorough score for the album, allowing you to watch at least two of the parts in action (guitar and voice), plus the occasional piano part written out. Since I play both piano and guitar, and sing, it's like having a partial orchestration provided for my education. And I do learn from this music. You will, too, and that can only help your own technical ability. Of course, you really need to know how to read music (and quickly, in some sections) to read the book while the CD is playing. As Petrucci says in another book, regular practice is the greatest boost to proficiency - so if you get this book, read thru it with the studio recording, and practice regularly, you will learn how to play this music. Maybe not as well, maybe not as spontaneously, but there are so many techniques here you'll gain a solid foundation for rock playing and writing. Not a bad return on your $25 investment, as long as you're willing to put in the time, too.Not every page is going to surprise you, because there's a lot of repetition in DT's music and usually with enough subtle variation that few shortcuts can be taken and still remain faithful to the original songs. You'll see that here. You'll also see plenty of "Riffs" and "Rhythm Figures", too. Again, the trick is to see how they constructed their songs and appreciate both the repetition and the changes.You will learn from this book, which is an excellent transcription of the guitar and voice parts, and I think you'll enjoy it every step of the way. 5 stars simply because this is such a great resource for any guitarist's education -- and it's such great music, too.

Not a knock on the content (hence 2 stars) but this is terrible. It appears to be a PDF rendering of the original content and the placed on to kindle format. The music looks as though it is about 20ft away and does not zoom. Perhaps it is better on an actual kindle as I am using this for iphone and Mac, but this is clearly not a true kindle format. caveat emptor....

This is THE book you should buy if you consider a DT fan and you play guitar.Finally I can "try" to play all those classic songs of scenes from a memory with the real notations, that trust me; are very different for those internet tabs.

Not too much to say. If you're looking for a transcription of this album, this is a good quality one with no errors that I can hear.
