Review

Review, CM Magazine, October 15, 2010:"An imaginative and engaging introduction to the concept of composting."Review, Through the Looking Glass, June 1, 2010:"This wonderful rhyming picture book will show children how easy, and how fun, composting can be."Review, San Francisco Chronicle:"Bouncy rhymes and busy collage art zip along as everything from apple cores to zinnia heads gets tossed into a rich and rotting soil-bound mix. A potentially heavy-handed message is delivered with a light touch so that you want to start your own waste heap right away. Mission accomplished!"Review, Washington Post:"When it comes to promoting environmentalism, there's no harm in starting young....Ashley Wolff's collage-style illustrations, made from newspaper, tea bags and other recycled materials, echo writer Mary McKenna Siddals's message of reducing waste." Review, Booklist:"This title highlights a subject rarely covered in youth books and provides a lighthearted introduction to an earth- and kid-friendly activity. The brightly patterned collage artwork featuring a cast of multicultural kids working together will easily draw a young audience."Compost Stew is beautiful, poetic, evocative—and educational. It provides such vital, important information for children (and adults) to understand and embrace, and to put into practice! This book greatly respects its readers, and I hope it will become as widely read and popular as it deserves. –Mollie Katzen, author of Moosewood Cookbook and Pretend Soup

Purchased this for my 5-year-old grandson plus 2 additional copies for our Creation Care Council at Church. Both my grandsons (the 11 year old thought it was cool too) loved it; and the Chair of our Council thought it was a great addition to our bookshelf for "kids of all ages." This, and the other books I purchased with it are a great way to get kids thinking about and involved in preserving our planet.

My kids like this one. The sing-songy prose is catchy and they get to learn about composting. They're interested in some of the unusual ingredients and like to imagine composting themselves.

Compost Stew is now tops on my five-star list of alphabet books for kids! The combination of author and illustrator is superb and will no doubt entertain and educate the youngest of readers. Teaching our children about composting is so important for the future of planet Earth. I highly recommend this book as a beginner guide to introduce children to composting as a way of turning trash into treasure.Children of all ages - yes, Adult, this means you - will appreciate this beauty of an ABC book.

Used this book as a way to introduce composting to 1st graders. The kids loved the pictures that went along with the story. The book does a good job of teaching the basics behind composting.

This is a simple, yet very well written alphabet book packed with tons of information about composting. My students and I have just started composting at our school, and this was one of our sources. I did not rely on this exclusively, of course, but used it as a starting point. They have returned to it several times this year, and will be reading it to the younger students. This should definitely be in one of your classroom library baskets.

I love reading this book to my preschool-aged daughter, especially since we just built a compost bin in our backyard. The main character (on the cover) is adorable, and I love the collage art style throughout the book.

Fun and cute. Great book for kids who love to garden!

Cool information.
