As a parent with a 6 year old with ADHD, I was very excited to read a book from a parents perspective. It was my hope that there would be tips that and lessons learned that I could use and apply to our situation. However, this book was more just memoirs rather than a book that provided useful information. I also wasn't a fan of the writing style. The nicknames (Warrior Girl, Mr T, Ms. Marvelous) were a little obnoxious to read over and an over again as the book went on. In addition, the style seemed to be a collection of short antidotes that did not have a consistent flow. I know the author is a 'blogger' and it felt as though she just took all her blog posts and put them together to make the book. Perhaps my expectations were just off, others might find this book more interesting.

I realize this mom is a passionate blogger and advocate for her son. Her candor is relatable, and it's always good to feel you're not alone in this struggle. But reading this book wasn't helpful. It's not a particularly literate memoir or a guide, it's not reported, and it's not put together in a meaningful way that is navigable or ultimately helpful. It's a series of blog entries or journal entries, sloppily organized and hastily edited. Anecdote after anecdote after anecdote pile one on top of the other, but without advancing points, or reach conclusions, or revealing helpful information (like the name of medications, for starters). The author leaves it to the reader—one who is presumably already struggling to make sense of a difficult condition—to wade through her memories and hyperbole and dropped references and cutesy code names to mine the meaning out of her work, to find what "worked" or to reach a sense of closure from idea to idea, chapter to chapter. A blogger does not an author make, and because this writer has such a passion and such a following, it would be an amazing service to her readers to work with editors who can help take her journaling and transform it into a cohesive, coherent read. I admit, as a busy mother with her own ADHD journey to wrangle, I'm feeling cheesed at having to paid to wade through this in order to pull out the moments of effective strategy or find the deeping meaning gleaned as a parent of a child w/ADHD. Sadly this book remains half-read. I'm out.

Penny Williams: Can I hire you as our ADHD life coach? Seriously. This book was one of the most touching books I’ve ever read, perhaps because I share the author’s journey through ADHD-land (and other LDs), but mainly because of the raw emotion that oozes out between the words. For anyone who has firsthand experience with ADHD and other related issues, you will feel like you are reading a very well written account of your own life. For anyone who doesn’t have firsthand experience but would like to truly understand what the experience is like for those of us who do, this book will accomplish that for you and give you an insider's view like no other I have ever read.I was often brought to tears by Ms. Williams’ depiction of the struggles that are an integral part of day-to-day life for the families of children with these deficits, and there were times when I actually had to put down the book and take a break because the emotion was so strong. Yes, it was that powerful. On the other hand, it was cathartic for me to have to confront my own feelings as I rode along with Ms. Williams on her/our journey. As I was reading her words, I could feel her anger, joy, frustration, sadness, despair, hope, helplessness and yearning for knowledge and the tools to help deal with her son’s ADHD and LDs, as that is what we go through as we try our best to help our kids learn to live with this frustrating disability and discover the strengths they have lying beneath the surface. ADHD is a never-ending roller coaster ride of emotions, and it can bring you to your highest high and drop you to your lowest low in a matter of minutes, and Ms. Williams has captured all that in her beautiful book.I give her a lot of credit for pouring out her soul in this book and sharing her experiences with us. I don’t think anyone could have written a better portrayal of the truth that is the ADHD journey. Thank you, Ms. Williams for capturing this experience that we share and putting it on paper for all to read.

The story of the ups and downs and intensity of learning how to parent adhd needs is perfectly described. It was so real that it hurt to read for the first two years after my kid's diagnosis. But now that I'm settled into acceptance and an accommodating mindset, it was a joy to read.

I wasn’t sure what to expect when somebody recommended I read this book. Once I started reading, I felt like I have lived this woman’s life. I have traveled the same road and cried the same tears. It touched me on a deep emotional level because I felt alone on my journey. Penny reassured me I wasn’t alone. It was a thoughtfully written personal story of a moms struggles with raising a child with ADHD. I would highly recommend this book, I thought it was a great read.

I loved this book. I completely related to Penny's story of the daily and constantly shifting challenges -- and joys -- of parenting a special needs child. I am eager to read Penny's next book, What to Expect When You're Not Expecting ADHD, and anything she writes after that! Her voice is very authentic. Reading this, I very much felt like I was talking with one of my mom friends when we get together and honestly talk about our experiences of navigating these sometimes confounding, sometimes frustrating times. I found myself nodding in agreement a lot while reading this -- especially around her discussion of the challenges of dealing with the school system, and having to advocate steadfastly for what her child needs in order for him to have a meaningful school experience. Been there! (Heck, I am there, and will be there for the next decade plus!) Thank you for sharing your story, Penny -- your story is also the story of so many of us who are learning day by day what it takes to parent "kids without instructions".
