I bought Mary Karr's "Liars Club" three years ago when I first began writing my memoir. I loved her writing style and was both inspired and intimidated. I just finished this book and it does such a great job breaking down key components to the craft using examples from Karr's own work as well as works by other authors from classic to contemporary. If you are writing a memoir or thinking about writing one I strongly suggest picking this up. You will learn about the importance of voice and how to find yours and stay true to it. The art of showing, not telling (which is where I need the most help). How to use/select specific details to make scenes feel more carnal and truer to the reader. And get advice on things like how to handle writing about family and topics that may be sensitive to them. You can really tell that the author is a teacher–some chapters feel like they could actually have been taken from a lesson plan–but that's what makes this book so much better than some of the others I've read about writing memoirs that were penned by agents or other industry professional types. This book isn't just a list of general tips/advice. Mary Karr is a true master of the craft and digs deeper, providing examples to give the reader a better understanding. It's almost like sitting in on one of her classes. Which after reading this book, I'd really like to do. I wish this book had come out three years ago before I started writing but now I am using what I learned to revise and edit the manuscript I have. The only negative for me was one or two of the chapters focused too much on a particular author who's style and voice didn't resonate with my taste (Nabokov for example) so I glossed over those pages. But everybody's taste in books are different. That said, in my humble opinion, this is the best book written on the craft of memoir that I have read to date.

This is far more than a wonderful book about writing memoir. It's like an intimate conversation with an admired professional whose passion is reading and whose vocation is studying how people understand their own lives and choose to reveal them. It is a feast for anyone who loves books (and definitely not just for writers and writing students).Fans of Mary Karr's three memoirs will find fascinating information about what she left out and why. They will recognize her unique and compelling voice on every page and proceed through the book eager to read what comes next.She analyzes in helpful detail the authors and works she most admires, often adding fascinating anecdotes about them. She examines some of the high-profile failures as well. Karr shares background stories about her own writing, including the physical toll it has taken.What I most want to tell you is this. I read this book in one sitting, and when I finish this review I'm going to reread it. Then I'm going to reread Nabokov's "Speak, Memory." I will read anything Mary Karr wants to write.

I love Mary Karr, and I love her work and there is so much that is good and helpful in this book. She writes as she speaks, which I love. But in my oh so humble opinion she also waffles a bit and she's a poet and I'm not, which is my fault not hers. It was worth the read, but I didn't love it. I am in awe of her knowledge and I love how generous she is with it. I laugh that she considers herself such a non academic and maybe compared to many she isn't, but she leaves me for dead that's for sure! I have heard her say, more times than I can count, that nobody made her the boss of memoir ... but that's not true! We all did, and she is, and it's well deserved! She is the boss and the queen :)

The BEST book to read for a toddler who has to go to the hospital. So incredibly thankful for this book!!!! My 3 year old had to have minor surgery in the hospital, so I bought this book to help prepare him for the big day. Like many other toddlers, he does much better in situations where he knows what is going to happen. We started reading it about 2 weeks before his procedure and he took to it right away. He would pick it out to read at bedtime. He loves Franklin and I think he wanted to know what was going to happen on surgery day. The night before surgery, he actually read me the book-he had it memorized! It has a good amount of text and is very accurate! Surgery day went very well, thanks in large part to this book!Franklin cracked his shell playing soccer. His Mom noticed it at bath time and they had to see the doctor to put a pin in it so he can grow big and strong. The book included content about preparing for the hospital (Franklin reads a book and talks with friends), what happens at the hospital (the doctors wear hats and masks, the doctor takes his temp/blood pressure, x-rays, etc) and how he is feeling (feeling scared, being brave).

My 3 year old was having her tonsils and adenoids removed, so I bought this book to help prepare her for the hospital setting. She was required to stay overnight and had never experienced anything like that before. She is relatively healthy, so other than doctors office checkups and a couple ENT appointments, she hasn’t been around hospitals very much. I started reading this to her at bedtime a few nights/naps before her surgery, and the book went with her to the hospital as well.I can say as both a nurse and a mother figure, I felt this book did a great job of preparing her for what to expect. She was genuinely intrigued by Franklins story and broken shell. While she didn’t have an injury persay, I explained to her the similarities in her situation, IE her tonsils were kind of broken. This book was simple and engaging, and I am completely satisfied with this purchase.

I ordered this for my 3 year old before he went in for heart surgery. It tells generally every step a child goes through before having surgery, from the initial doctor visit, to waiting around hungry, to doctors and nurses scrubbed up with masks and hairnets in the OR. I really feel like how smooth my son handled his surgery was due much in part to me reading him this book every day and multiple times on the day of surgery. I recommend reading it ahead of time and then during the the surgery process, pointing out parts in Franklins story as your child goes through them. So very comforting and it engages your child and calms them. With this book my child had a little idea in mind of what to expect.

Of the books I bought I found this one to be the best to help me prepare my son for his surgery.I found this book to be age appropriate for a preschooler, and of an appropriate length- the other books I bought were much longer than typical preschool books. While the overall theme of the book is being brave and what that means, it also covers: not eating before surgery, anesthesia, x-rays, needles, hospital bracelets, wheelchairs, waiting rooms, doctor masks and how hospitals look and smell.In the book, Franklin gets injured playing soccer, and needs to have a pin put in his shell so that it will grow properly. The book then goes through the steps before and after surgery.We read this book every night for 3 weeks before my sons surgery. When surgery day came it was very easy to explain who the doctors were, and what was going on and my son seemed less nervous than me.I highly recommend this book to any family of a preschooler, who has to have surgery big or small.

I love this book so much. My daughter is 3, and going to have major surgery soon to help her leg grow properly. Reading this book to her, I can't tell you what it means to have Franklin talk about how the pin in so his shell can grow big and strong - Just like she's having a new bone put in, so her leg can grow big and strong.One thing bothers me, the bit at the end about his parents leaving him alone. But my daughter can't read, so I just skip that sentence. I also make sure anyone she asks to read it also skips it, so she doesn't unnecessarily worry. Very glad I'm able to stay with my child in the hospital as she recovers.

This book is wonderful. It introduces the idea that you can be both brave and scared at the same time. It talks about the different stages of preparing for a hospital stay, arrival, pre-op testing, the operation itself, and what happens after surgery.I bought it to read to my daughter, who was born with a heart defect. She recently needed a procedure at age 3, and I wanted to help prepare her for an experience that might be scary and she might remember. I was looking specifically for a book that was a little more intense than "I broke my arm!" but still appropriate for a toddler. This fits the bill perfectly.Months later, this has become one of her favorite books and provides a good reference for anytime she's a scared, but still brave.

This book should be required reading for any child who needs surgery!! We already loved Franklin, but I was still pleasantly surprised by how well this book was written. It goes into (age appropriate) detail about what Franklin should expect as he prepares for his surgery. It was even helpful for me! I also appreciate that it seems relatively up-to-date with surgical procedures, and includes Franklin going through all the things that would be scary for a kid going through surgery. Will definitely be recommending this one to friends!!

While some may enjoy this book. I sadly, did not. Had I been a British professor, maybe, but it was slow and a bit dry snd definatly not written the way Americans prefer to read.

This was a collection of essays that were on the whole very entertaining. The first was a bit erudite for my taste but the remainder made the book very worthwhile.

As a former OR Nurse, and now I am an international healthcare industry consultant, I purchased this book to remain current on new procedures, instrumentation, equipment, etc. For one thing, this book is better than my old bible (Alexander's). It is more complete on the "need to know" items. But for me, I will be able to use it for several applications: First, to estimate costs per procedure (owing to instrumentation, time, equipment, staff, prep, medications, etc.) the only improvement I could recommend, Maxine, is put the CPT codes next to the name of the procedure. Second, I consult internationally on medical tourism efficiency, quality, safety, waste mitigation, process and risk-based thinking. this book can be used as a go-to reference for each procedure - both the old ones I know like I know my name, and new ones that became the standard of care after I left the OR. I can also help the medical tourism hospitals create pricing formulas with the information on each procedure.Maxine, you have my deepest respect and appreciation. This one's a keeper!

So, I bought this for an eight year old who LOVES bugs and reptiles. She reads a couple of entries a night from this one and the Reptileopedia. There is a LOT of information in these books and it's broke down in easy to read sentences and easy words to understand. Smaller children will enjoy the bright and colorful pictures. Older children will enjoy the information without having to ask too many times "What does this mean?". And even an adult with a curious child will enjoy these books as you get to explore the creepy crawlies of the world.This Bugopedia (and the Reptileopedia) are her most treasured books and as long as she's satisfied with them, I am too. Next we're going to get the Oceanopedia so she can learn about all the things deep in the ocean.

This book has great pics. But the text is not as engaging as other bug books I have gotten for my boys. It has more focus on characteristics of insects in general, or as family groups, rather than of specific species. Also, I can see how a 10 year old might like the level of information, but I think 7 is definitely pushing it given the vocabulary difficulty and length of most passages.

My science-minded niece (age 10) loves insects. Bought this for her birthday and she carries it with her everywhere, sometimes sending me texts of interesting articles she's been reading. It's a beautifully photographed and well written book. Anything that captures a child's imagination this way gets five stars from me.

My son likes the pictures and I like the reading sections. The authors pulled small sections out of the paragraphs and placed them near the pics so that I can read them as we look and then turn the pages quicker. Eventually we made spend more time on each page, but he is excited and we jump around a lot. The quality of the book is excellent. The layout and order of the book is well done. We have more complete Bug encyclopedae. But this one is the newest with the most accurate info, I am assuming. For example, the book might say that there are 1000 species of cricket.....I assume some scientist knows this info.My main parts of the book that we like are the pictures, the quick blurbs, and the layout.

Got this as a gift for my 5 year old nephew who is really into bugs and has a ton of books on bugs as well as spends 90% of his time at the zoo in the bug or reptile houses. The photographs were fantastic and there were a ton of insects he'd never even heard of which was great.

My Grand Daughter Olivia loves bugs. At the end of school (2nd Grade) she was asked what was her most favorite book she got during the school year. She hands down gave this book two thumbs up. She told here teacher this was not only her most favored book, but hands down the best book her Grand Father got her all year.

I'm a homeschooling mom of 4 so we read a tons of books! This was one of my children's favorites. We were continuely checking it out from the library. So I bought it for them this Christmas. The pictures are great and facts very interesting. Even non-readers can enjoy it. There are many NG books that aren't that great but this one is. I also discovered the Ultimate Reptile-opedia yesterday and Bodypedia while at the book store. They too seem to have some meat on the bones.

Our son loves this book. He loves the big pictures and the facts. Beware if you're terrified of spiders like I am. I opened the book in the back and there it was the biggest spider face ever! I about had a heart attack lol but it is a good book and worth the money!

I've been reading a few different books about classical education and I saw this book cited as a source for some points about american one-room schools in the 19th century. I ordered a used copy from Amazon for a pittance and, really, what a let-down. The index pointed me to a couple of mentions of "one room school", which were about how the automobile allowed for the one room schools to be consolidated into larger schools.On the book as a whole, a few observations:There are so many outdated buzzwords and faux neutral comments about values that the book is interesting as a relic from recent history, but I feel humiliated in reading it for purposes beyond just that.Note the sterile tone in these more quotable selections."Neither educational philosophy nor philosophy itself divides automatically into neat categories. The discrete schools, or "isms" as they are often called, have no validity apart from from the thinkers whose systems of thought they represent." p. 35"What do you think?1. Consider all you must do today to become a certified teacher. Are the rules sufficient to make sure incompetent people are excluded?""In former North Carolina Governor James Hunt's article "Education for Economic Growth," which appeared in *Kappan* in April 1984, probably reflected the opinion of many Americans when he argued that the real function of schooling is to make technologically and scientifically literate citizens able to compete for jobs in the world market." p. 74 (that's a correct quote. It seems that, if you already knew about the movements and philosophies he references, then you gain nothing of use in the story he tells because his writing is so lifeless and vague. And if you come to the book ignorant of those movements etc, then you still don't gain any insight because those things are described so imprecisely and blandly.It might be that this is used as a textbook for a college course. If so, my recommendation is to buy as cheap a copy as you can, and don't kid yourself into thinking that American history was as miserable in the making as it is in the retelling.

This is the kind of book to read when you want to go to another place and another time and have a few enjoyable hours. The "detective" is a plucky, intelligent young woman who has lucked into being a sleuth for society friends since she has no employable skills. Her assignment this time is to find an elusive author who has failed to turn in a manuscript on time. The setting is a country estate lorded over by a battleship of a lady who is angling to get her book on etiquette published. Other entertaining characters include a couple of golf fanatics, an obsessed scientist, a devious lawyer and other assorted and interesting characters. Some aspects of the novel make it seem like a mix of Miss Marple and Bertie Wooster. The setting is the early 1920's and the clothes and conversation are very much that of the Bright Young Things of that era. A very enjoyable read.

As a retired librarian, I read all genres (except horror) but my favorite read is a well-written mystery. I am delighted to find this author's books (from a referral in the Fantastic Fiction website) so I can read more of her books. Both books in this series do not disappoint: interesting characters, well placed clues, tight plot line and research dropped into the story to increase interest (no pedantic whiff at all). I especially enjoy a plot twist at the end that is in line with the clues dropped. Strong female main character who can take care of herself and a possible (supportive) love interest complete the package. Five stars for writing a book that I enjoy stepping into!

This book, the second in a new series, is just as good as the first. We have a spunky protagonist with a brain - no she doesn't always get things right or get them on the first pass but that makes it more realistic - excellent supporting characters that are likable though not perfect, the beginnings of a romance, and murders to solve with loads of suspects - what fun! I'm looking forward to the third book - whenever it comes out.

The author has definitely done her research. Lots of little things that tie it to that time period make it fun. My favorites: the painted tin face, the book The Secret Adversary, and the faked fairy photos. - all things that I found interesting in my nonfiction reading, that she found a place for in this story. This fun book kept my interest, so that in between reading it, I looked forward to picking it up again.

I thoroughly enjoyed being with Olive at this English country estate as she solves this intriguing mystery - Beautiful 1920s setting - well developed characters & plot twists with interesting historical tid bits thrown in (I had never heard of "asthma cigarettes" - sure enough they were a real thing in that time period.) I'm looking forward to the next book in this series - & hoping to learn what Jasper's up to.

Author Sara Rosett's second book in the High Society Lady Detective series is even better than her first one. Her writing is on par with the well-known authors of the Golden Era of detective fiction. The characters are well developed, with lots of fun foibles. The book stands on its own or can be enjoyed as the second of the series. I found her historical references to be accurate and interesting (although I am not sure I will ever use the fact about the proper way to eat a banana at a dinner party!)

i was afraid this series was going to be overly light but it is turning out to be wonderfully complicated murders! love the period for fashion and society. love the main character for *realistically* break societies mold for her.

Situational perfect, great science, good dialogues. Leaves one wanting more. Not a sophisticated review, but there you go. Read it.

Rich Bradwell has written an excellent travelogue. I acquired this book to compare to my upcoming humorous memoir/novel of a wedding in Spain (Seville) and the family shenanigans that ensued (Seven Days in Spain). This book has given me wonderful information on Spain's culture and history. (Thanks for doing my research for me, Rich.) Granted, a five-minute speech at a best friend's wedding is a bit of a contrived reason to spend three months in Spain (I know how much it must have cost him), and I'm a little miffed he left his wife at home. In addition, the ending could have been a little more conclusive and fun. Nonetheless, some fun stories of encounters with the locals and insights that come with traveling to another land. I planned to skim and ended up reading the whole thing - a recommendation for sure.
