I've been reading a few different books about classical education and I saw this book cited as a source for some points about american one-room schools in the 19th century. I ordered a used copy from Amazon for a pittance and, really, what a let-down. The index pointed me to a couple of mentions of "one room school", which were about how the automobile allowed for the one room schools to be consolidated into larger schools. On the book as a whole, a few observations:There are so many outdated buzzwords and faux neutral comments about values that the book is interesting as a relic from recent history, but I feel humiliated in reading it for purposes beyond just that.Note the sterile tone in these more quotable selections."Neither educational philosophy nor philosophy itself divides automatically into neat categories. The discrete schools, or "isms" as they are often called, have no validity apart from from the thinkers whose systems of thought they represent." p. 35"What do you think?1. Consider all you must do today to become a certified teacher. Are the rules sufficient to make sure incompetent people are excluded?""In former North Carolina Governor James Hunt's article "Education for Economic Growth," which appeared in *Kappan* in April 1984, probably reflected the opinion of many Americans when he argued that the real function of schooling is to make technologically and scientifically literate citizens able to compete for jobs in the world market." p. 74 (that's a correct quote. You may have felt, as I did, that the sentence doesn't have a subject.)Or notice the values chatter that follows this list:"Following are some of these values that can be traced to the Puritan heritage:- respect for authority- postponing immediate gratification- neatness- punctuality- responsibility for one's own work- honesty- patriotism and loyalty- striving for personal achievement- competition- repression of aggression and overt sexual expression- respect for the rights and property of others- obeying rules and regulations"Without making a judgment about these values, it may be pointed out that teaching them creates certain problems." p. 100-101The book has 11 chapters:1. Introduction: Applying History to Education Today2. Shaping the Schools: Philosophical and Psychological Foundations3. American Education: Our European Heritage and the Colonial Influence4. American Education: The American Revolution5. American Education: 1812-18656. American Education: 1865-19187. Development of Modern American Education After 19188. American Education: 1960-20009. Educational Reform After 1980: The Search for Excellence10. Issues in Modern American Education11. Globalization, Trends, and Gaining PerspectiveI've included a picture of one of the charts that are thinly scattered throughout the book. Notice the heroic mold into which the post-modern teacher is cast. Notice the task master description of the Thomistic schools. Are you thinking that seems a little partial? Yeah, I did too.I was led to this book from a footnote in one of Leigh Bortins' books. I still don't have a good source for a description of a one room school. This book by Pulliam is really unhelpful not just in my topic but as a readable, useful history of education. It seems that, if you already knew about the movements and philosophies he references, then you gain nothing of use in the story he tells because his writing is so lifeless and vague. And if you come to the book ignorant of those movements etc, then you still don't gain any insight because those things are described so imprecisely and blandly. It might be that this is used as a textbook for a college course. If so, my recommendation is to buy as cheap a copy as you can, and don't kid yourself into thinking that American history was as miserable in the making as it is in the retelling.
Great book for the price
Purchased this as an addition to a library of educational books. Have found that the authors have covered a very broad topic though it's thin on some idea development.
needed it for a class
Good book that offers up to date and accurate info on education; great for college courses.
I was taking a class on this for college and I really liked this book. I was able to understand it clearly while reading it. It truly made me understand the History of Education, I would recommend getting this book instead of the e-book cause I couldn't put it down for a min.
