Review
"An invaluable guide for screenwriters and anyone else interested in learning more about the creative art of storytelling ... reveals the key ins and outs of developing a powerful screen narrative. As a longtime professor of screenwriting, I must say that I was inspired by this book." (Frank E. Beaver, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor Emeritus Department of Film, Television and Media, University of Michigan Ann Arbor)"Developing effective and affecting scenes is the beating heart of screenwriting, and Jim Mercurio has given us an excellent guide to writing scenes that are narratively tight, emotionally engaging, and thematically resonant. He assiduously avoids tired, old school truisms to give us a thoroughly useful, contemporary road map to better writing." (Mick Hurbis-Cherrier, Professor, Film & Media Department, Hunter College-CUNY)"Utilizing engaging language, Jim Mercurio explores the shape of individual scenes within screenplays, probing the parallels between micro- and macro story structures, and providing keen insights into the nature of storytelling that should prove useful to creators of dramatic narratives not only in film and TV but in all platforms and media." (Prof. Richard Walter, Former Screenwriting Area Head, and Associate and Acting Dean, UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television)"A powerful survey of how to write effective scenes, illustrating the importance of digging deep for above average results." (California Bookwatch)"This book may well change the way screenwriting is taught. While most courses focus on the big picture, Jim Mercurio gives invaluable step-by-step advice about individually crafting each scene in a screenplay. Using well-known examples, Mercurio encourages filmmakers to think of each scene as its own full production, so that the entire film is made stronger by the strength of its parts. It's an eye-opening approach to storytelling, which will greatly benefit aspiring screenwriters, game writers, and novelists alike." (Heidi McDonald, award-winning writer, game designer and author of Digital Love: Romance and Sexuality in Games)"Deftly written, organized and presented ... a must-have instructional reference and resource." (Midwest Book Review)"The first time you read Jim Mercurio's outstanding book, you'll be as astonished as I was at his ability to reveal and explain every conceivable element of an emotionally captivating scene. The next hundred times will be when you use it to make certain that every single scene in every rewrite of your screenplay or novel is entertaining, compelling and memorable." (Michael Hauge, consultant and story expert, author of Writing Screenplays That Sell, Selling Your Story in 60 Seconds and Storytelling Made Easy)"The thing I love most about The Craft of Scene Writing is that Jim treats writers as filmmakers, urging them to consider how the script informs all of the downstream departments, painting a picture in the reader's mind for every story beat. Jim understands that scripts are just an accumulation of these story beats and it is our job as writers to obsess over each and every word and action to ensure that each beat is clear, concise, dramatic and surprising. Easier said than done, but Jim gives us the tools to chop, mold and sharpen these beats to gleaming bits of perfection." (Mike Blum, owner/creative director, Pipsqueak Films; award-winning director, writer and producer; and creator/showrunner of Get My Goat and Fifi: Cat Therapist at DreamWorksTV)"The Craft of Scene Writing breaks down the rules and how to break them, beat by beat, as a story within a story. A must read for the novice and expert filmmaker." (Brian Asingia, CEO of DreamGalaxy and DreamAfrica Consulting, author of The One Who Lives Forever and The Last Digital Frontier)

At last a book that goes into the realities of how scenes work. The material has been there, to be seen, all this time but wasn't properly perceived until the author pointed out how it really worked. Amazing. This book is so far beyond other books I've seen on writing that I feel a deep pain that I did not have access to such material years ago. The author most appropriately uses a quote by Renoir about the relation of craft and art. Truly a beautiful and practical work.
Jim Mercurio is like that crazy scientist, hidden in his cellar, working non-stop on his ideas on screenwriting. Thankfully for us, that is. His ideas on scene writing are very minutely detailed, without getting overly technical and yawn-like boring. Also, he has a summary-like cheat sheet at the end where you can quickly glance over what you read when wanting to apply to your writing. He has a set of encyclopedic DVD's on screenwriting as well, wish I could check em out, too pricey for me so, for now, this book will suffice.
If you have already been at screenwriting for a while, and have read most of the essential books on the craft, The Craft of Scene Writing will take your screenplays to the next level. Think of it as Screenwriting 301. It goes into advanced topics that other books might hint at. I highly recommend this book, but only after you've gotten some writing under your belt.
I read this book in under a week. I was mesmerized by things that I never considered in my own writing that the author suggests incorporating in screenplays. It breaks a screenplay down from the smallest beat(s) to the largest elements necessary to craft a compelling story. My favorite thing about reading the book are the numerous examples of each concept illustrated by the author to show exactly what something is and why it works. I would recommend this book to anyone, beginner or professional, in order to tackle writing their next script or improving upon the scripts already shelved.
I've been a screenwriter for 5 years now and have read several other screenwriting books. Jim's is in the first of this ilk to cut through the superfluous and get to the heart of every facet of screenwriting. It was an easy read and I was able to apply insights gleaned to the script i'm working on now. I highly recommend this book to new and longtime writers. IT'S A MUST READ!
great help
With a straightforward narrative and in a style that’s easy to read, “The Craft of Scene Writing: Beat by Beat to a Better Script†by Jim Mercurio promises to be among the top five of all the books I’ve ever read on the craft of screenwriting. I’ve read numerous books on the subject for the past twenty years or more, and many’s the time I regretted their purchase; not so this time. What’s more, the author writes well and with proper and effective Engish usage, as well as writing using excellent grammar, spelling, and punctuation. These skills ought are expected of a writer in any case, although many authors of screenwriting “how-to†books, I’ve noticed, seem not to bother with these essential mechanics.Thankfully, Jim Mercurio does bother to write properly and to write well, which only makes his premise that much easier to follow and comprehend. I’m not far into the book, and already his theories and advice have improved the scenes in my current screenplay projects.“The Craft of Scene Writing: Beat by Beat to a Better Script†by Jim Mercurio is one of those Kindle books I look forward to opening and to eagerly read, knowing full well I’m getting my money’s worth and a great deal more. It’s a book that imparts what it promises; you’ll do well to incorporate this title in your list of go-to books on the craft of screenwriting.
This book is the missing piece of the puzzle. Until now I have found good material to help me develop all aspects of my scripts, plays and novels, with the exception of scene writing. The book’s author thorough knowledge of the craft shows in the book. His approach is different, and the level of detail is surprising. I would say 70-80 percent of the content here is unique, not something you could find anywhere else.Another plus is that the book has an optimistic view; it makes you feel that you will be able to write great scenes with ease.I was so enthusiastic after I finished reading it, that I immediately put the book's content to the test by rewriting a couple of scene from a screenplay I’ve been working on. Wow! Amazing! These rewritten scenes look and sound so much better. Now, I feel really confident about my ability to write great scenes.
