So, I bought this for an eight year old who LOVES bugs and reptiles. She reads a couple of entries a night from this one and the Reptileopedia. There is a LOT of information in these books and it's broke down in easy to read sentences and easy words to understand. Smaller children will enjoy the bright and colorful pictures. Older children will enjoy the information without having to ask too many times "What does this mean?". And even an adult with a curious child will enjoy these books as you get to explore the creepy crawlies of the world.This Bugopedia (and the Reptileopedia) are her most treasured books and as long as she's satisfied with them, I am too. Next we're going to get the Oceanopedia so she can learn about all the things deep in the ocean.
This book has great pics. But the text is not as engaging as other bug books I have gotten for my boys. It has more focus on characteristics of insects in general, or as family groups, rather than of specific species. Also, I can see how a 10 year old might like the level of information, but I think 7 is definitely pushing it given the vocabulary difficulty and length of most passages.
My science-minded niece (age 10) loves insects. Bought this for her birthday and she carries it with her everywhere, sometimes sending me texts of interesting articles she's been reading. It's a beautifully photographed and well written book. Anything that captures a child's imagination this way gets five stars from me.
My son likes the pictures and I like the reading sections. The authors pulled small sections out of the paragraphs and placed them near the pics so that I can read them as we look and then turn the pages quicker. Eventually we made spend more time on each page, but he is excited and we jump around a lot. The quality of the book is excellent. The layout and order of the book is well done. We have more complete Bug encyclopedae. But this one is the newest with the most accurate info, I am assuming. For example, the book might say that there are 1000 species of cricket.....I assume some scientist knows this info.My main parts of the book that we like are the pictures, the quick blurbs, and the layout.
Got this as a gift for my 5 year old nephew who is really into bugs and has a ton of books on bugs as well as spends 90% of his time at the zoo in the bug or reptile houses. The photographs were fantastic and there were a ton of insects he'd never even heard of which was great.
My Grand Daughter Olivia loves bugs. At the end of school (2nd Grade) she was asked what was her most favorite book she got during the school year. She hands down gave this book two thumbs up. She told here teacher this was not only her most favored book, but hands down the best book her Grand Father got her all year.
I'm a homeschooling mom of 4 so we read a tons of books! This was one of my children's favorites. We were continuely checking it out from the library. So I bought it for them this Christmas. The pictures are great and facts very interesting. Even non-readers can enjoy it. There are many NG books that aren't that great but this one is. I also discovered the Ultimate Reptile-opedia yesterday and Bodypedia while at the book store. They too seem to have some meat on the bones.
Our son loves this book. He loves the big pictures and the facts. Beware if you're terrified of spiders like I am. I opened the book in the back and there it was the biggest spider face ever! I about had a heart attack lol but it is a good book and worth the money!
