This book is a well-researched project covering the search/discovery of William Carroll's place of birth during the occupation of the Philippines by the Japanese during World War II. It is a well-reported story of the conditions during the first three years of William's life and his parents and siblings as prisoners in the Philipines. All the Americans and others were non-combatants but were treated as if they were combatants by the Japanese. It tells of the courage and bravery of Bill's parents as well as the other prisoners. It highlights the hopes/fears of all as they awaited the return of General MacAuthur to set them free. It is well worth the money and your time to read this book. It concludes with the events leading up to the author's family trip to the place of her husband's birth and the wonderful experiences they had on the journey. There are lots of pictures to see as well.
My dear friend of over 50 years has written a remarkable book. Lean Carroll, an accomplished pianist and a very fine writer, has beautifully narrated the story of her husband's family's three years in a Japanese internment camp in the Philippines. Our historians have neglected to give this harrowing period its full due. Thus it is even more important that we have anecdotal evidence though sometimes uncomfortable to read. The text is peppered with photos that take us deep into the story. Riveting!Lean has gifted her family with a recounting of its history and its strength, forbearance and resilience. Such a beautiful tribute.
Philippine Birthmark, author McClean Goodpasture CarrollLean's extensive research into the 'little known' WWII Asian Pacific history between 1941 - 1945, after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and occupied the Philippines, is an outstanding work. The personal daily struggles of thousands of individuals within the internment camps gave a glimpse into the power of courage, hope, ingenuity and spirit, in spite of starvation and unbelievable hardship. The personal testimonies of survivors, pictures and background history is invaluable and would be an excellent history lesson or documentary.I could not put the book down.Sharon Lovejoy
researching and captivating prose! This wonderful story of survival & courage against all odds should be on shelves of local libraries & history classes!!Bravo McLean Carroll!
Thank you, McLean Goodpasture Carrol, for investing your heart, soul and time into researching and writing this story of your family’s determination to endure and survive their 3 year’s of interment in the Philippines during WWII....it was a captivating account from start to finish.
This was a gripping story of WWII in the Philippines and an American family on the run from the Japanese. It documents their hiding in the jungle and ending as prisoners of war. It is well researched and very poignant.
This is a very moving story about the formative years and early life of an extraordinary American.Pat Lawson
