So, when Blum takes this marvelous material and abstracts it into form and composition, the result gives multiple layers of meaning.The first, of course, is simple love of that form, in all its variations. The women themselves carry their native beauty effortlessly. Then at another level, Blum uses women's figures for plays of shadow and light. Skin tone changes the meaning of chiaroscuro: her paler models reveal their form in the shadows, but the darkest tones glisten with highlights that trace out the feminine structure. And, between those extremes, some women of middle skin tone combine the two, defining their shapes as much with the high notes of brightness as with their deeper tones and shading.The next layer of each B&W photo truly sets Blum's work apart, though. That human material, with it complex play of light, carries the visual composition and abstract forms that Blum coaxes from these gorgeous models. Angularity and curve, plane of thigh or ridged landscape of hand, defined shape of muscle or suspended softness of breast - each has its part in some photographic construction or other. It's this sculptural use of form, while retaining each model's unique character and grace, that I find so compelling in Blum's work.It's gratifying to see such a wide palette of human coloring in this collection, with a matching range of features and personal details. The models all fit the toned, slim, twenty-something mold. It's an easy look to like, but sometimes too easy. If Blum could do as much with different curves and with the differences of a woman's ages, this would be a landmark work. But, even with that limitation, it's still a beautiful collection. Tastefully curated images. There is a lot of nudity, as the title would suggest, but it is so clearly art. I am not ashamed to have it as a coffee table book.

This is a magnificent book - it's big, it's brash, and it's so polished that almost anyone would be proud to showcase it on their living room coffee table. It pays admirable homage to the geometry and elegance of the female form. It's one of those rare collections that are truly inspiring. TeNues is to be commended for daring the publish such an artistic manifesto when it seems that all that's selling these days are erotic/sexual titles. Hopefully their boldness will be rewarded, as this book is a most marvelous collection of artistic nudes. And it is very exciting to witness the development of photographer Sylvie Blum. She is maturing into a true visionary.

Former model Sylvie Blum switches to the other side of the camera and transforms her nude subjects into gleaming black-and-white puzzle-sculptures. Even though many of her photographs show only part of the female model's body, it is surprising how much personality is evoked in the compositions by a jutting shoulder blade or uplifted hands. Her full-body poses range from kinetic to fetal. The aggressively athletic postures are contradicted by the soft gleam of naked skin.To me, the most disturbing portraits involved a bald, ultra-thin model. Here, Blum tended to angle her camera upward from below, giving her subject the appearance of a Giacometti sculpture.This volume pays homage to the alluring, young, female form, sometimes vulnerable, sometimes athletically arrogant. Very few props were used, which is why the clenched circle of a nipple ring comes as something of a shock on the model named Vel. It somehow makes her seem even more naked. The only banal portrait was a pouty-lipped, head-and-breast shot of Ashley, which would have been more at home in a 'Playboy' magazine.The main body of this oversized (11"x13.5") book--99 full-page photographs--is followed by a plate list, where the author identifies the year the photograph was taken, along with a sometimes whimsical title.***review copy supplied by publisher

This book is about how traders may cultivate their intuition to its full potential.The book is divided into four parts. The first and last explore the relationship between intuition and trading, with many relevant quotes from experts in a variety of non-trading fields, such as athletics and self-improvement, as well as from top traders. The middle two sections are interviews with nine top traders and trading psychology experts, each describing his or her own view on how they develop and utilize intuition and related skills in trading. An excellent reading list is included at the end. I found the interview with Charles Faulkner most interesting as it contained material not found in other published interviews with this master NLP practitioner and trainer.The jacket summary overstates one aspect of the book with the statement "...extensive exercises that will how you how to enhance your trading performance." There is indeed a lot of information, detailed examples, lists and the like that one might use to enhance one's intuition, but I do not see "exercises" in the form of a workbook, so take heed to set your expectations accordingly. On another note, the range of trader styles represented in the interviews is a bit too narrow in my opinion; most are floor traders. I might prefer a broader mix of perspectives."The Intuitive Trader" by Robert Koppel is a significant contribution to the trading literature. Five stars.

This book consists largely of interviews with quacks and floor traders who are not really taking big directional bets. It has limited insights and pales in comparison to Market Wizards, Soros on Soros, or even some history of money management like Fortune's Formula. Not worth the time at all.

This is from far one of the best trading books highlighting the psychological side of trading. Many thanks to Mr. Koppel for this great great book!

Koppel's book, "The Intuitive Trader" provides excellent insights into the ways to combine left-brain (logical) and right brain (intuitive) skills to gain the competitive advantage. Koppel interviews established masters and shows how each of them rely on both the left and right sides of the brain. An excellent book for anyone in the world of professional investing.

Mark Douglas's "The Disciplined Trader" is, quite frankly, inexhaustible in explaining the many facets of the psychology of trading, and much better than Koppel's many attempts at the subject.

At last a book that goes into the realities of how scenes work. The material has been there, to be seen, all this time but wasn't properly perceived until the author pointed out how it really worked. Amazing. This book is so far beyond other books I've seen on writing that I feel a deep pain that I did not have access to such material years ago. The author most appropriately uses a quote by Renoir about the relation of craft and art. Truly a beautiful and practical work.

Jim Mercurio is like that crazy scientist, hidden in his cellar, working non-stop on his ideas on screenwriting. Thankfully for us, that is. His ideas on scene writing are very minutely detailed, without getting overly technical and yawn-like boring. Also, he has a summary-like cheat sheet at the end where you can quickly glance over what you read when wanting to apply to your writing.He has a set of encyclopedic DVD's on screenwriting as well, wish I could check em out, too pricey for me so, for now, this book will suffice.

If you have already been at screenwriting for a while, and have read most of the essential books on the craft, The Craft of Scene Writing will take your screenplays to the next level. Think of it as Screenwriting 301. It goes into advanced topics that other books might hint at. I highly recommend this book, but only after you've gotten some writing under your belt.

I read this book in under a week. I was mesmerized by things that I never considered in my own writing that the author suggests incorporating in screenplays. It breaks a screenplay down from the smallest beat(s) to the largest elements necessary to craft a compelling story. My favorite thing about reading the book are the numerous examples of each concept illustrated by the author to show exactly what something is and why it works. I would recommend this book to anyone, beginner or professional, in order to tackle writing their next script or improving upon the scripts already shelved.

I've been a screenwriter for 5 years now and have read several other screenwriting books. Jim's is in the first of this ilk to cut through the superfluous and get to the heart of every facet of screenwriting. It was an easy read and I was able to apply insights gleaned to the script i'm working on now. I highly recommend this book to new and longtime writers. IT'S A MUST READ!

Until now I have found good material to help me develop all aspects of my scripts, plays and novels, with the exception of scene writing.The book’s author thorough knowledge of the craft shows in the book. His approach is different, and the level of detail is surprising. I would say 70-80 percent of the content here is unique, not something you could find anywhere else.Another plus is that the book has an optimistic view; it makes you feel that you will be able to write great scenes with ease.I was so enthusiastic after I finished reading it, that I immediately put the book's content to the test by rewriting a couple of scene from a screenplay I’ve been working on. Isabel Wilkerson can write. Her book reads with a wonderful flow. I will wait for her next book and will read it. I hope it does not take her usual 7 years of research. This book did not "do it" for me. It was soooo loooong --- much of it reads like an almanac . I learned more than I wanted to know about black migration from the south. Wilkerson definitely learned too much in her research, and told it ALL. By the end of the book I didn't care about the characters, Ida Mae, Robert and George were just vehicles to get the facts down on paper. The characters were real enough but the stories were lacking. I did not enjoy this book. It was a struggle to read.

I would give this book a thousand stars if I could. I'm very grateful to the author and everyone she interviewed for sharing these stories with me.This book has deeply affected me. Others have reviewed the content, writing style and extensive research. My comments are of a more personal nature.Until I read this book I would have told you I (a white Southern woman in her 50s) was particularly well-informed about the experience of African Americans, having read almost all of the authors she quoted in the book and many she didn't, including Toni Morrison, Zora Neale Hurston and more contemporary authors, having studied the civil rights movement from my armchair and seeking out African American theater, arts, and friends. I was wrong. I was ignorant. I didn't know about the Great Migration. I had picked up bits and pieces of the extent of Jim Crow from my reading, and I had read them from the perspective of someone who wanted to draw from their experience without being, apparently, very curious about the context of it. This book, these stories, opened my eyes by putting the experiences in chronological order and in context. Without ever being maudlin, divisive, or melodramatic, the author struck a tone that allowed the reader, me, to feel the power of these stories. The author did a great service to the people she interviewed and her readers by allowing us to decide how we feel about these stories. She confidently and brilliantly presented them in a matter-of-fact manner and in the exact words of the person describing their own experience, trusting, correctly that their emotional impact would not be missed. By focusing on every day experiences rather than sweeping generalities, the book allowed me to see the insidious and pervasive nature of Jim Crow, how it affected every moment of every day, how no action could be too insignificant to be viewed as a threat to the social order and therefore to involve the risk of one's life. I had no idea that it was illegal for black people to work outside the cotton fields or orange groves, nor did I have any idea it was so dangerous to leave the south. These lives and stories are deeply, deeply affecting. It helped (although it hurt emotionally) to simultaneously read The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness by Michelle Alexander and The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay, a novel about apartheid in South Africa.I personally thank the author and everyone she interviewed. Deepest gratitude.

I have been telling everyone I know about it and one well-placed friend is buying hundreds of copies to share with friends in Africa who are perplexed by the predicament so many Black Americans find themselves in to this day.The Warmth of Other Suns paints the picture as compellingly and completely as anything I've ever seen or read. As the stories of desperation, ambition and flight unfold, the reader can see just how many ways the American Dream was yanked away, hidden or otherwise made inaccessible to one generation after another. George, for example, could have been so much more than a railroad porter. He wanted to be more. He TRIED to be more. He even went to college at a time when that was all but unheard of for a young black man from the citrus belt of Florida. Danger and deprivation robbed him of that opportunity and all of the possibilities that would have come with it. Instead, he ended up an overworked denizen of substandard housing, with broken knees and bad kidneys from all the years of picking oranges and tangerines then stacking and unloading luggage on railroad runs along the eastern seaboard. Meanwhile, his New York-born-and-raised children -- not privy to the "village" atmosphere of family and child-rearing of George's native Southland -- were left to fend for themselves in the impersonal, take-a-number concrete jungle of an overpopulated city and, with limited options, spent their energies on getting into, or ducking, trouble. The reader can just see the State of Black America take shape.This is an absolute masterpiece by a virtuoso writer. As I neared the end of it, I got the blues, knowing how much I would miss reading it. So, I did what any right-thinking person would do: I read it again.Please do yourself a huge favor and read this. The collaborator intended to deliver "As a Man Thinketh" into the hands of women by changing all the pronouns. The message is still the same, but I was distracted by how many male pronouns he missed and one male pronoun that should have remained male, but was changed to female. If you're going to make it gender specific, at least have a good proof-reader to catch your mistakes!

This book goes with me nearly everywhere. I'd read it several years ago and it was helpful in getting me to get outside myself, and change my attitude a bit (oh, what a helpless victim of circumstance and other people's actions I'd been!)Later, I ordered up several copies to hand out. When I was an executive, other women would sometimes come to me with complaints about who did this to them, and why they were helpless to change. Everything I suggested had a 'Yeah, but...' attached to it. Before I hit my mid-40's, I was caught in the drama, feeling responsible and depressed by their circumstnaces.Then I started handing out copies of the book. I'm sure many thought I was nuts, but a couple have actually gotten the message.I'm not a tough-minded broad, but a bleeding heart liberal who finally realized you can help a fellow working-woman to grow not by solving her problems, but by supporting her as she learns she can do it herself.The language in the book (really a booklet) is based on "As A Man Thinketh", but altered just slightly for women. It is invigorating to realize that what is true for the gander is true for the goose.Don't be put off by the style - "Woman is buffetted by circumstances so long as she believes herself to be the creature of outside conditions, but when she realizes that she is a creative power, and that she may command the hidden soil and sees of her being out of which circumstances grow, she then becomes the rightful master of herself."Oh yes! So, here's the message - what you think and do greatly affects what happens to you. You aren't the victim you think you are, so move on!"As A Man Thinketh" and "As I Think" are also available.

I liked the fact that they literally took a classic and made it more relatable for women by replacing "he" for "she". I truly enjoyed it!

This small but powerful books goes to the depth of you. You can put on a happy face to the world, but if the thoughts that run through your mind aren't lined up right and monitored carefully, it doesn't change your circumstances. It's written a bit 'high brow', but inspite of the old English wording, you definitely get the message. A basic for anyone seeking to better themselves inside and out. It's nice that they changed the gender wording so it is more personal for women, although you can get the same jist from the original.

This is my second copy of this book. I highly recommend it. This is the book As a Man Thinketh, rewritten so that the he's=she's etc. I feel that in reading As a Man Thinketh, I could think, "that's right men are like that." While, in reading As a Woman Thinketh, I internalize the information more and realize, "that's right, I have been like that." I am aware that recently another version of this book has been made by another author. I have not read it. My preference of reading this book by Dorothy Hulst is in the basics, she's a woman, rewriting this book for women.I find that this book can be a short read, and makes for a better reread. I write in mine and find that adding to the text has been invaluable. I keep it with me and read it at times from the beginning and at times from wherever the book opens for me. The book selectively goes about explaining the quote, "they themselves are the creators of themselves" and the role we as play, in the creation of who we are.

I took this book and broke down into sections via highlighting. Some information is to be used daily, as guide for the morning and in the day. Other information was to sit with and look inside myself to see or dis-cover and pray for it to be either removed or dealt with more deeply. Lastly, other information was given as a means of visualizing on, which I liked. Do not think I planned this at all, it was shown to me to do this and I simply followed.I would like to share the visualization;My garden is the representation of my heart as the book states. I look in my garden and I see that it is dark, filled with lifeless leaves, weeds, and the tree roots seem to still have life. There is no sunshine at the back of my house, windows are dark and haunting. This is what I first see and it saddens me. I pray asking for the removal of whatever it is blocking me from my true inner self. A few days later, I see a bit of sunshine peering through the clouds, I've cleared much of the leaves away, I see a sense of life returning to the back side of the house, the curtains are different; lighter, and where my resentments lay, I've asked for the anger to be removed thus seeing my part in the situation and that spot where weeds were growing is a flower budding as well as buds on the tree.This pamphlet is powerful in that it re-directs a woman to seek herself in her heart and bring what she finds to the surface....my life is truly of my own making.....Look to see what is there, ask for it to be removed, look at your part, and then ask for the change necessary praying all the while...."Change your thoughts and you change your world" Dr. NVPeale

After I heard him say he had written a book, I ordered 2, one to read and one to give away to one of our students for graduation. I highly recommend this book.
