Marla Heller is a Registered Dietitian, and holds a Master of Science in Human Nutrition and Dietetics from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Helpful information on creating homemade seasonings to replace salt and a good array of recipes for every day part that are high in fresh fruits, vegetables and lean meats and seafoods and low in sodiium and calories.
Had a sudden increase on my blood pressure reading and after realizing we had all been eating too much processed food for several months due to busy schedules, I got scared and decided to look for the best natural way to reverse the damage done before it was too late and I became hypertense.This book has literally SAVED my health and made it easier to switch back to a healthy lifestyle.At first I thought it would be all about non-tasty, boring food. But after trying ALL of the recipes in here, I give it 5 stars and would recommend it to anyone.Best thing is, all dishes are essy and quick to make, with common ingredients and even recipes for keeping our own spice blends.Give it a try. It is worth it.
Love, love the Dash Diet. I followed it for 10 days using only the receipes in the original book, and lost weight without feeling hungry or deprived. Therefore decided to order the actual cookbook. I love the receipes and how they are separated by meal (breakfast, lunch, dinner, etc). Wonderful diet plan, simple to use, receipes are great, not difficult to prepare and are not time consuming.
Bought this over a year ago hoping for some inspirations especially for vegetarian/vegan ideas. Very disappointing whether a meat eater or vegetarian/vegan. I found most of the recipes mundane in nature and lacking in flavor although easy enough to prepare. I am keeping this more as a reference for quick DASH info than as a cookbook. For recipe ideas use Google. I found the Mayo Clinic’s website to be the better resource for recipes. Check the library before buying this book then make your decision.
Overall, the recipes are decent. I was hoping for more creative ways to make different foods, but this does offer a solid base to refer too. Most of the book is pointing out what many people know that helps with heart healthy, such as low fat, no fat, and low sodium ingredients. I think pictures of each recipe could change my thought about the recipes. I know if it looks good, I'm far more apt to try something new.
I have tried many diets over the years. Dash diet is one that I do not like to think of as a diet. It is more a lifestyle change. I get to eat lots of yummy foods, and this cookbook helped me along the way. I was very backwards in my flavoring. Often resorting to butter, and salt. After just a few of these recipes I was able to use what I learned, and update my favorites into healthier alternatives.

OMG! This is an excellent book! Been using the recipes listed inside and after a week have already dropped 5lbs. Decided to buy it because I am a a subject of hypertension and needed to get it under control ASAP! So, these recipes will make a difference. They also help with controlling high blood pressure as well, which is what my husband had to get under control. So, for what it's worth, I highly recommend this book. They offer easy-to-do recipes and they use simple ingredients, nothing that you have to go buy at specialty stores. Have fun and good luck!
