My eyesight is not the best these days, even with glasses. The pictures are just beautiful. And the most important is that I can see the date from across the room. At the end of the year, I give the pictures to our local church for the children to use in making cards and posters.

Stunning and beautiful photographs. Each day it's a complete joy to change to the next picture. This is one of the best daily, desk-calendars I've bought. Obviously it helps if you like flowers :) The size is awesome too! The pictures are not teeny tiny, they are 6 by 6" and the weekend ones are 6 by 5.5". A real variety of pictures too: close up of single flowers, abundant flowers crowding a path, wildflowers on a hillside. Also there is always the name of the particular flower provided.. I think I'll be buying this yearly to help me get through the 4-5monts of winter here.

Actually, I have not opened this year's calendar, but based on the one I had for 2014, my expectations are quite high. All of the pictures are quite beautiful. I appreciate the variety. On one day, I'll see a close-up view of a gorgeous rose. On another day, I'll see a field of blooms. Occasionally, I'll see a botanical illustration of an entire flowering plant. This calendar is one of the joys of getting up early in the morning.

I purchase this every year for my 87 year old mother. She can't see very well but it is important for her to know what day it is and day of the week. She loves the surprise of every day and the flowers are beautiful....very nicely made

GORGEOUS flowers. Paper is substantial weight and the photos are the highest quality. After four years of buying the Bird version of this calendar, I bought the flower one as a gift, and the recipient loved it. It's a little burst of sunshine every day.

Very pretty picture calendar with a stand. But I really preferred the ones they used to make with the tear off pages. It was not clear when I ordered that this is basically 1/2 pages and must put all to the back till 1/2 way then turn all around. Do not really care for this setup as I can't use for notes ,etc.

I don't sneeze with these flowers. They are beautiful and when both side dates havepassed I send them with female birthday cards to enjoy as well. Another desktop decoration.

I am brand-new to the sport of hockey. I went to my first game in 02/2018, so barely 6 months ago. And afterward, I told my parents this is it, this is the sport of my people. It's skilled and fast and I feel like every goal is earned. And I'm equally horrified and fascinated by the fights and vicious body checks. I attended as many of the local AHL games as I could, followed my team through to the very last game of the Calder Cup, and even started keeping tabs on the NHL and the Stanley Cup despite not knowing any of the team (I rooted for the Capitals!).And I knew nothing about the game. I started this adventure without even knowing how many players played at one time, how the games and periods were structured, anything. I fortunately sat next to a few really nice guys who helped explain the roles, penalties, and rules but there was a lot left I still didn't get. So I went searching for a book and found this one. Greg Wyshynski was hilarious, insightful, and did exactly what he said: he gave me a better understanding of the game and how to watch it. I'm far from an expert, I will absolutely read this again when the 18-19 season starts up & it will probably make even more sense then, but for now, so many things I had seen were suddenly put into perspective. I understand the plays that were made, the decisions made, and even background information on how teams are formed, the drafts, the rules, recent changes to the system and player safety, and even some tidbits of how it used to be played. There's a wealth of knowledge here that he delivered in a very fun, relatable way even for baby beginners like me. Highly recommended & definitely loaning this out to the friends and family I'm going to drag into this sport with me.

As an ignorant travel hockey mom, I bought this book to help me understand and appreciate what is happening on the ice. While written in a fun and enjoyable way, you do need to have some rudimentary knowledge of hockey to get the most out of this book. I wish there was a chapter with the down-and-dirty basics.

Perfect book if you're looking to improve your hockey knowledge and understand little details you've never notice watching the game. I consider myself a novice to the sport and found a lot of really interesting stuff. Plus his writing is funny and engaging

This book has made watching even more fun as I learn to see the plays develop. It is written in a light-hearted, sometimes irreverent style that keeps my interest through what otherwise might get tedious. Illustrations are helpful.

I learned a lot of what to look for during games, but some terms left out until the end of the book. Still a good read for someone familiar but wanting to know more.

It's okay but I had to get around all the complaining by the author...

As the title suggests, this book gives insights on what's happening everywhere else on the ice. Good insights on how plays are set up and executed. Fun section on hockey lingo.

We had to stop at page 26 because we couldn’t get the coding exercises to execute. The book says it works off of python 3.5.2, but I couldn’t figure out how to download that specific version. The python website has the newest version, 3.6.I gave it two stars because my child and I are new to coding, so it was good to at least learn there is a language called python and to see how to works. We got some things to work, but then other exercises like drawing four squares and defining multiple functions with the fashion design exercise didn’t work at all.In case it matters, I have a new windows HP laptop. Maybe another reviewer can come along and explain how to get version 3.2.5, so this book isn’t worthless. Or maybe someone more computer coding savvy can explain where I’m going wrong.But until then, I’d say think before getting this particular book because so far, we can’t use it to it’s full capacity.The first book in this series about scratch worked fine.

I tried the version that the book uses and the newest version and couldn't get most of the exercises to work. Very frustrating for my students. It seems the author makes some assumptions and leaves out steps that she probably takes for granted but makes a rookie stumble and become frustrated.

In this book, Robert Hass provides translations of haiku by three of its preeminent practitioners, together with supplemental material to give the reader context, such as how haiku grew out of the older Japanese tradition of collaborative verse. Basho, who lived in the seventeenth century, worked before haiku were seen as an independent art-form.At the end of the book, Hass discusses the difficulties of translating haiku. How the resonance of their seasonal references, their mix of kanji and phonetic symbols, the syntax, the punning are hard to render in English. Yet despite that, he captures something that moved me in his lean translations. For example, here are two of his translations of Basho: Midfield,attached to nothing, the skylark singing. You could turn this way,I'm also lonely this autumn evening.And two of Buson's: Coolness--the sound of the bell as it leaves the bell. The old mancutting barley-- bent like a sickle.And two of Issa's: The holes in the wallplay the flute this autumn evening. Last time, I think,I'll brush the flies from my father's face.I found the book an excellent introduction to the three poets. Highly recommended.

Hass presents a comprehensive introduction to the works of Basho, Buson, and Issa. The translations are quite readable and the commentaries are excellent. It seems to me one who seeks to understand haiku should begin with the old masters.This work was published in 1994, giving modern English haiku folks twenty years to argue about what is going on with haiku.In the meantime, the old masters who began it all are here waiting. Whatever I read of modern haiku I intersperse with one or another versions of the masters. That gives me perspective with which to evaluate theory and practice of today.At the price of a used book today, this is an incredible bargain. You will want other versions, but this is an excellent beginning.If you wish to delve deeply, this book includes how to and commentary by the old poets themselves. It is well worth knowing what they said. "Learn about pines from the pine, and about bamboo from the bamboo."

Haiku escrito por Basho. This is my preferred author of Haiku. Haiku are simple and pure poetry done with 3 and sometimes verses, describing certain quality. It sounds clear and real with a touch of soul. The poetry summarizes one lived situatin.

I prefer to have the Japanese and English versions of the haikus because there can be differences in translation and interpretation that affect the nuances of the haiku.

The haiku translations in this book are very good and are accompanied by explanations of the verses and withdescriptive narratives on the lives of the three key writers of haiku. Basho was the most important of thethree poets and he is dealt with in depth by the author. The other two are described quite adequately also.All in all, the book would be a good addition to any follower of the poetry of haiku with its emphasis on thethe seasons, sensations, and mood that prevail throughout this short poetic and emotic producing form of Japaneseliterature.

The scholars and masters will be able to write a technical review covering all the fine points of why this is such an excellent collection. For my part, I just find I'm able to lose myself in the imagery so easily. It's become a sort of "apple-a-day" for my soul. I will never be able to read these works in Japanese, but I sense these translations carry all the simple beauty and truth of the original poems. The biographies are succinct yet intimate. The poets are masters of the art. The selected poems are amazing, inspiring, humbling, uplifting. I've shared this over and over, with people of very different tastes, and it's never disappointed.

A small collection of haikus from the three greats: Basho, Buson, Issa. A great book for haiku lovers. If you're just discovering haiku or are buying for someone who likes haiku, I cannot recommend this book enough. My copy is so used, I'll have to replace it soon. That's a good sign for a book!

Readable type in this larger size, accessible information, excellent charts and helpful cost guidance. There isn't much that gets desk or pocket space these days, but this book is in my small pile of essential books.I'd go so far as to say the beginning clinician might spend a weekend reviewing this book with a highlighter and some flags; it will save you hours when on the wards or in the primary care office.

Last year I didn't buy Tarascon because somebody reviewed and indicated that there was a typo in the peds section. For the last 3-4 years the company discontinued providing clear removable plastic covers. The plastic cover was very good b/c I could often clean it with alcohol wipes, it made the book durable, and I could often store business cards, etc. in the interior folds of the plastic cover. I contacted Tarascon numerous times during the past two years, and they said that they will re-issue the plastic covers this year. Last time I asked, they said they won't. I went to Kinko's and Office Depot for a solution to no avail. Frustrated, I looked in the Internet to find somebody who manufactures custom book covers, again without success. I came across quite a few Internet postings by medical students and physicians, complaining as well. In addition, the new book has a new narrow type face with ever smaller characters. The color of letters is almost grey and the back ground is darker so the contrast is intolerably bad. Paper quality also appears to have suffered, it's thick and inferior compared to previous versions. It causes a lot of eye strain and I have to use a different set of reading glasses to be able to read. (2.00D vs. 1.50D that I normally use!) To make the things worse, I found a typo within the first 10 minutes(!)I spent with it. Cefdinir section does not show it's also "Omnicef." You can't find Omnicef in the book! Coupled with other readers' comments from the previous year, the reliability of this book for a medical professional is now questionable in my eyes. I understand that the company had changed owners a couple of years ago. I also understand that the price is cheaper than previous years. Nevertheless, I would not give $5 for this book. I do not recommend it unless stranded on a deserted island with 2.00D reading glasses. For having used Tarascon products for decades as a loyal customer, it's hard to let it go.

I'm going to grad school for my CRNP and this was a requirement for the pharmacology course. It's a handy, quick guide for looking up medications and is lightweight compared to the other books we had to buy. I haven't started clinical practice yet and think it may be a bit big for a pocket, but it does contain all the medication information needed for prescribing.

This book was required for my Pharmacology class and we needed to use it for the open book portion. It has all the important information you might need for a drug, especially if you do NOT have internet access and can't access Epocrates. It's easy to use and only has facts. No-fluff

A great reference for any new RN. I have carried one of thes in my pocket since becoming an RN in 2000. Highly recommend!! There are some references that just need to be on paper! This is one of them...

One part that I especially like about the Tarascon Pharacopoeia is the pricing symbols and the breast feeding and pregnancy symbols. This allows me to know at a glance the safety and pricing of the drugs I am prescribing.

nice and concise! a must in med/clinical rotations!....for the sake of words...I am adding more words here.....still have to add more words to submit this! but it is a good book! :)

I like the Lab coat version much better because it has almost the same amount of content as the full book. The Pocket version leaves out some graphs and other key information when trying to decide between various meds. I highly recommend this of the pocket version: PA-S

This book is so much fun! He made his first movie when he was a junior in high school, casting friends from school. His mom said "My house was a total studio..." A great story about a phenomenal filmmaker.

Well I liked the book but why no mention of 1941 at all?

This is a pretty good decent sized book about both Spielberg's life growing up and his most successful movies such as Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark, ET, Jurrasic Park and Saving Private Ryan to name a few. There are some great colour photographs from the movies along with a lot of information. If you like the films he has done or are interested in his life then this would have to be one of the best books out there on that subject.

This is a beautiful little book. I enjoyed reading Ms. Rubin's text just as much as the photos. It reads more like a novel than a bio. including little known facts and personal interviews of his family and friends. She makes a point to illustrate the early influences of Steven's family and school life that later became themes for his movies. It is a very intimate look into Speilburg's personal and professional journey. Ms. Rubin has included many formerly unpublished photos. It all adds up to a wonderful read and certainly a lovely addition to your library, especially if you are a fan of Spielberg's work.

Great book for the 9-14 age group or anyone older looking for a light read. Lots and lots of interesting pictures of Spieberg's childhood, early career and blockbuster movies and behind-the-scene production. Well written and a high quality book.

About the Author

Shiva Naipaul was born in 1945 in Port of Spain, Trinidad. He was educated at Queen's Royal College and St Mary's College in Trinidad and at University College, Oxford. Having traveled and lived in developing countries myself during the 1970s, I found my own experiences reflected in many of the author's narratives. It's not a fun book to read, but it does give valuable insight into the cultures of countries where life is difficult and governments are corrupt. In fact, it helps reinforce the lesson that a preponderance of virtue and morality are essential to general happiness and prosperity in every human society.

I reread North of South after reading it initially in the mid-1980s. It stands the test of time. I traveled extensively in Africa, especially East Africa in the early 1970s, and Naipaul was one of the first authors I had read who captured what was really going on in Kenya and Tazania during that era (published in 1978, presumably his travels were around 1976-77). The book also covers Zambia which was terra incognita to me at the time. As an ethnic "Indian" he unwillingly has experiences that I did not have on a continent where people with his appearance were simultaneously needed and reviled by Bantus.

I would have liked it more if the author wrote more about the Asians in Africa. Seemed to cover little important ground.

Having been brought up in Kenya, I found this a fascinating read. The author does not pull any punches and lays it out for the reader to judge.

Early, sobering snapshot of independent East AfricaRe-reading this fantastic 1978 book forty years later was an unexpected pleasure. Has it aged? Surely, the apartheid years in what is called South, are long over, but population growth in North, here Kenya, Tanzania and Zambia has sky-rocketed, e.g. Kenya had just 12 m citizens at the time, already creating severe land hunger, rural urban migration and myriad problems related to inequality, underemployment, poor services, etc.Shiva Naipaul spent months travelling in the region, probing relationships beween whites, blacks and browns (Asians). The whites described are the most diverse, ranging from old-fashioned settlers, modern expats to backpackers, all with access to another homeland. The blacks are the new masters, making a mess of things almost everwhere, quickly. The browns are the most insecure, caught between whites and blacks, endogamous and closed, fearing economic ruin and deportation as in Uganda. Naipaul's perspective as a casteless, nonreligious man from Trinidad with roots in India on all things Asian in his book is often enlightening.Questions asked include, should colonial rule have lasted longer, like another 100 years? What kind of Marxism is possible in Africa? What is the meaning of 'liberation', 'revolution' or 'socialism' for their beneficiaries, educated or not? Among many other highlights, his tales about Tanzania's gross political and economic stupidities are early eye-openers, at the time probably viewed as treason by the country's many left-wing admirers. Instead, the author concludes, "Hopeless, doomed continent! Only lies flourished here. Africa was swaddled in lies--the lies of an aborted European civilization; the lies of liberation. It was only 15 years or so since these countries gained independence from British rule. Zambia was once known as Northern Rhodesia; Tanzania was created by a mis-matched union, at least in terms of size, if not also culture, between Tanganyika (which had been a German colony until the end of WW I) and Zanzibar (a group of small islands off the coast); and Kenya, well, it had been known as Kenya, when it was a British colony, and underwent no transformation in name, or borders. With the independence of so many African colonies in the late `50's and early `60's, there were high hopes for the future; a better life for Africans once their colonial masters were shaken off. Naipual's account was one of the first that indicated that those hopes might not be warranted.Shiva Naipaul, who died in 1985, was the younger brother of V.S. Naipaul, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2001. They were originally of Indian sub-continent origins, born and raised in Trinidad, in the Caribbean, when it was a British colony, and both went into the literary world of London. There is a considerable school of negative opinion about V.S. Naipaul's role in describing "third world countries"; in essence, that he is entitled to say things, due to his origins, that for "politically correct" reasons cannot be said by white men or women. That opinion has been summarized, on more than one occasion, with a pithy, three-word non-PC formulation, in the possessive: Naipaul is the white man's... Concerning V.S., I share some of those negative opinions; however, even though Shiva possesses a fair degree of V.S.'s sardonic outlook, I've always felt he was much more honest and fairer. Among other matters, his outlook is an "equal opportunity" one; he takes on the whites as well as the blacks that he encounters. In brief, Shiva seems so much more authentic.In the introduction Shiva Naipaul forthrightly addresses the "PC" concerns: "Especially a book about `Africa'- a subject that, in the ex-imperial West, is labeled `fragile,' `handle with care,' `this side up.'" Naipaul also explains the title early in the book. He is talking to one of the hustlers in Kenya, who describes Nairobi, as the greatest place "North of South," with the South meaning South Africa, specifically "Jo'burg." Naipaul commences his journey in the departure lounge in Brussels, flying Air Zaire, and thus via Zaire, for reasons of finance. In Kenya he visits the coast, Nairobi, and the "white highlands," and describes the interactions of the remaining whites with the blacks, "old-style" and "new". Naipaul quotes from his fellow Caribbean, Franz Fanon. He also has his own summation of blacks who have been completely uprooted from their native heritage, and have not had that heritage replaced with "Something of Value,": "They were made up of a number of separate and warring selves. Hence the wild veering between farce, piety and up-to-date cynicism."In Tanzania, Naipaul reports: "Over the years, President Julius Nyerere of Tanzania has adopted something of the character and style that Nehru affected in the first years of Indian independence, claiming a special place in the moral firmament for himself, his policies and, by extension, his country. He then proceeds to describe a country in which nothing works, including the people; there are shortages of almost all essentials, and Nyerere's policy of "Ujamaa," (familyhood) has a decidedly totalitarian bend. He goes on to Zambia, a "front-line" state in the "war" against what was then Rhodesia, and describes that the economic boycott measures are really non-existent; they are mainly a figment of the imagination of the Left in London.It is the characterizations of the people that he meets along the way that is the true strength of this book: from the white Austrian who is still trying to run his dilapidated hotel on the Tanzania coast, obsessed with his sea-shell collection; the crazy Dutch woman, with her two young children who wander through the hotel; the black American woman, a true ideologue who walks out of a "dialogue"; the black native hustler in Nairobi with his brief-case; the border officials; and true to his origins, he pays particular attention to the Indian Diaspora which is being uprooted from these countries.I first read this book not long after it was published, and found the recent re-read most worthwhile. The book has withstood the test of time. I do believe that Shiva is a better writer and observer than his older brother, and if he had not left us in 1985, he may have been awarded the Nobel instead. These flashcards are fantastic! I'm a piano teacher and love teaching little ones, and I haven't found a better series. They go along perfectly with the rest of the books and are a great way to reinforce concepts. I make up all sorts of games with them and the children look forward to "Flashcard Time" at the end of their lessons. Great way to practice at home too!

I made the mistake of trying to save money and skipping the flashcards with my first son, opting instead to use some others that I had. After he really struggled with note-reading, we finally went back and redid this book right - with the flashcards. My daughter has been using them, and it really makes all the difference. If you want your child to enjoy piano and not make it a drudgery for them, do them the favor of helping to make it easier for them by doing their flashcards with them every day. It will make note-reading so much less painful.

The entire system when used with CD is Very Cute, Very corny. My 5 year old loves it.

My kid is really learning piano fast with the Music for Little Mozarts series. He's only six, and only taken lessons for a few months, but he's already playing Jingle Bells, O Christmas Tree, and Up On The Housetop! (These songs are sold separately)

I just started giving piano lessons to a 9 year old, and these flash cards have been very helpful (both for the student but also the teacher who may need to relearn some basics :))

The cards are thinner than I would have liked. They are a peachy-orange color; white would be easier on the eyes. The content is very good. They come in a small folder/cover, but would be better if they had a box or envelope to keep them together.

This book gives good inspiring insights on these women life and how we can relate to them on so many levels.I recommend it.

As a new member of the B&H/Lifeway bloggers (free!), I received a complimentary copy of this book to review and was immediately struck by its quality - nice hardcover, thick shiny pages, and a ribbon book marker.Despite these pleasant features, my delight turned to dismay when I realized that the illustrations from classical paintings are neither acknowledged by title and artist, nor are they at all representative of the 31 women whom they're supposed to portray. As I said in the longer review on my blog, almost every beautiful painting used as an illustration in this book shows tones from stark white to ruddy skin but does not feature women who look like they’re from countries in Africa or the Middle East. Although my own skin is close to stark, I still resent this too-common misrepresentation of Bible people.I also take issue with the book’s perspective. According to the Introduction, 31 Women of the Bible offers a "concise summary of each woman’s appearance in Scripture, viewed through the lens of our modern culture.” But, don't we already see through contemporary cultural lenses and, therefore, automatically do that as we read? What we do not see is why people did what they did in a specific time and place with concerns and conditions unlike our own. I wish the book gave us this type of insight.A woman’s insight would be welcomed, too, as “The Takeaway” and questions asked are not ones I think about or particularly want to know.Since I’ve agreed to give a review in exchange from my complimentary copy, I have to do something I don’t normally do – give the book 3 stars. My personal preference is to only review books I can happily give 4 or 5 stars to, so I’m feeling bad about this and don’t want to discourage the author in his work. Besides, I think this book makes an interesting one-month devotional to help readers see how human nature hasn’t changed, nor has our need for God. Each woman portrayed comes with a unique personality and strong character from which we can learn more about ourselves or the women in our lives.I’d most recommend this book, though, as a 31-week (or more) guide for a Bible discussion group where members are encouraged to read the text, consider the questions prior to meeting, and feel free to add their own. Then, oh, what lively discussions would most likely occur!

31 Women in the Bible delves deeper into the characteristics and lives of each of the females mentioned in the book. Not only does the author share details of who they were and what they did in life, but he also gives the reader a greater understanding of what they may have been going through on the inside. He does this by providing detailed information about their lives and the circumstances they experienced, scripture references, and my favorite part, a "Takeaway" section that is offered at the end of each individual biography. Upon reading these sections, I would sometimes find myself rethinking what I thought I knew about a few of the people mentioned. It was definitely an eye opener!The book also includes a section called, "Food for Thought." This area offers several afterthought questions that readers can further expand their character studies with. Sometimes the questions involve circumstances in that person's life, while other times they are questions directed to the actual reader. This allowed me to sometimes put myself in their shoes and see circumstance through their eyes. There is a note from the author in the beginning that mentions the hope that each reader will "be challenged, encouraged, warned, and helped." I personally felt that this book definitely accomplished these tasks.Every time I read one of the biographies, I felt this insistent need to keep going, so that I can learn more about the rest of the women included. This is probably one of the more remarkable Biblical character guides that I've personally read. The text also offers a more concise, down-to-earth writing style that definitely kept me engaged. This is a book that can be read from front to back, or in different settings as a Bible study. The pretty blue ribbon bookmark is a handy feature that allows me to keep my place. There are also a ton of beautiful full-color illustrations throughout that really help bring each woman's story to life. I received an advance review copy of this book to read–all views expressed here are unbiased and purely those of my own.

Overall reading short snippets about different women mentioned in Scripture was interesting. Some of the written snippets were written better than others, and each included three questions to ponder. When I read a book like 31 Women of the Bible, I try to remain open to glean the nuggets of wisdom that seem to leap off the page. The questions to me ranged from helpful to thinking the questions were not pointing to the deeper meaning of the women’s’ lives they were sharing.One could read this within a short amount of time or use it as part of their devotion time. My suggestion would be to always read from the Bible anything about the woman being portrayed in the book before reading the day’s snippet. A book like this is a good way to introduce women of the Bible in a way that hopefully launches people to look to how these women point to God or Jesus.There were a couple of snippets that were written in a way that seemed to not focus seriously on the woman or what she experienced. I personally didn’t care for the misrepresentation of what the women may have looked like as they seemed to be of European descent and these were women far removed from those portraits included in the book. As long as one reads looking for what God may be speaking to them, then one will come away with something to ponder on. But don’t stop there, look at a concordance to find any reference in Scripture about these women to get an accurate portrayal of who there were, where they lived or what their lives were like historically.
