Lucy Johnson was a con artist. She married Jake Fletcher then tricked him into going to Kansas City while she cleaned out his bank account. Lucy's husband did the same to Nora Graham. Together Jake and Nora chase them down. Spoiler Alert I was disappointed with two happenings in this book. One the two kids they rescued should have been adopted by Jake and Nora. Two the cow hand who had worked for Nora for years then fired by Charlie Haskins should have been given a new job by Jake. That would have given this book 5 stars from me. ☺
Another excellent story about swindle, chase, love, and justice. Bad guys get worse as the story goes along. The main characters are very appealing. I like the way C.J.Petit portrays the US Marshals. I like his portrayal of the local sheriffs and their deputies. There is a stimulating love story throughout this book. Hard to put it down. I hope you enjoy this book as much as we did.
CJP has written a western about grifters and how they operated in the old west. A beautiful woman with two men to back her up. The woman would seduce, marry and then bilk the new husband for everything. She finally met her match and ended where she belonged. This is an excellent read for the genre..... ER
This is the third Petit book I have read and they were all outstanding. Although the editing was better in this one than the first two it was still not good. The stories are so good I just don't worry about the lack of editing.
I've become a C.J. Petit fan, and this book doesn't disappoint. I read to escape, and this escape took me into the lives of good people thrown into bad situations, and rising above them to prevail and find the best of themselves. Great page-turner with interesting and developed characters, coupled with surprising plot twists. I'm still a Petit fan!
This story is very entertaining,and difficult to set aside for meals or other interruptions. The characters are very much fun to see the loving devotions, and their humor. The author has a great way to show his own sense of humor.
Jake had been taken by the beautiful woman Lucy. She had married him and then taken all of his money and sold his cattle. Now he was looking for her. She had done this many times before. Then he found a women who was also taken by Lucy's partner. Her name was Nora. They went after the crooks. And they found each other.
I gave this rating because of its unpredictable ending, for one thing. I have read hundreds of Western books, and 99% are predictable...this one wasn't. Secondly, this books characters seemed real, not the larger than Life, super heroes, that most books have. Great story development.
